No, it was when some people talked about how it would be cool if Still Buffering did an episode about white privilege and the Smirl family lost their poo poo.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I thought it was more like a small group of fans was suggesting topics like that and they said "yeah, no, this isn't really that kind of show, we're trying to be a lighthearted funny little show, getting into heavy politics is not really our wheelhouse at all" and the fans were like HOW DARE YOU

I got into TAZ when I had two weeks of highway driving all day to do for work, I’d listened to most of the first arc at that point but I binged like 3 whole arcs on that trip. It’s definitely easier to remember what’s going on when you can binge it, not that Balance was that complicated.

God help any content creator who ends up with a significant number of actively-looking-for-things-to-be-offended-by people like that as part of their core audience. They'll inevitably come for you over something spectacularly dumb and at that point either admitting guilt or not admitting guilt will both prove you're a megahitler. The whole thing with Lindsay Ellis is an impressively stupid recent example.

Do people Brian’s age care about snl? I’m old enough (36) that a lot of my friends who did comedy/acting stuff when they were Brian’s age had “get on snl” as a goal but I feel like that show has been coasting for long enough that younger generations don’t give a poo poo about it

I’m not basing this on anything it just feels like a smart thing to say so I’m going for it

I vaguely remember people liking some SNL bits when I was in high school, like Celebrity Jeopardy, but the idea that anyone under 35 would think of SNL today as some aspirational pinnacle of comedy is baffling. A mostly lame and cringey topical comedy show that occasionally has some bit that hits the public consciousness seems like a relic of the pre-internet days. It's been pointed out by lots of people that social media and online meme culture basically made SNL irrelevant. If something funny or newsworthy happens, everyone in the world has gone through the whole cycle online of all the obvious jokes being made several times over and wearing out their welcome by the time Saturday rolls around and SNL... makes a low-effort sketch using the obvious jokes about the thing.

It sounds like he shared an article critical of Mermaids a few years ago that maybe mischaracterized them and then deleted it later? Is there more to it than that? Because if that's it I don't blame Webb for getting pissy when an interviewer tries to bring it up as some gotcha and make him weigh in on a hot-button social issue in what's supposed to be a light interview about his comedy.

So I could never get past the first 3 or 4 episodes of Graduation. I feel bad for Travis a bit. I think like there's this feeling that you need to make your campaign world so lived in and unique that the whole thing inadvertently becomes too conceptual and unwieldy. I ran into the same problem when I ran my first homebrew campaign. Really D&D is at its best when it starts out a bit generic and you work with your players to turn the world into something special.

It kinda feels like they forgot that that's how Balance happened. The first arc was literally just a canned module that Griffin was running and he added a bunch of his own lore as stuff went on. He didn't try to invent a whole world from scratch right from the get-go, it was basically them riffing over generic D&D-world. Some of the best early stuff is just them joking about normal D&D stuff.

I'll be donating, if for no other reason than to help stave the mass consolidation happening right now between Sirius XM (Earwolf :smith:) and Spotify buying up so many folks. Independent stations are a thing to treasure, even if I only listen to only a couple of their overall shows.

There is crazy money being thrown around by big companies trying to corral podcasts. Roman Mars just sold 99% Invisible to Sirius/Stitcher for enough money that he was able to make a $1,000,000 donation to PRX/Radiotopia on his way out.

I have my doubts how well the rest of that network will be able to do without the flagship podcast though. What's the next-biggest podcast on Radiotopia? Criminal?
