Tiggum posted:I don't think I get this show. It's like a children's cartoon but completely inappropriate for children. I thought it was a children's cartoon until the justice league got murdered. So then I thought, OK, that start was just to lull us into complacency; the real show is going to start now. But no. The next episode we're right back to being a standard kids show - but with way too much violence. Who is this for? Tiggum posted:It's got nothing to do with it being animated. It's just written like it's for kids. All the school bully, awkward first date, parents trying to relate to their adolescent son (from the perspective of the son), stuff. If you cut the violence you could put it on after school and it would fit right in with Degrassi and Daria (or whatever the modern equivalents are). Weirdly enough this exact question came up in a discussion about the comic back when it first came out. How the comic was sold to me was "Think about Hyperion. Imagine he had a teenage kid and wanted to be a super hero like his dad." I asked whether he meant Squadron Supreme, Squadron Sinister (from Exiles) or Supreme Power Hyperion and he said keep reading. I asked if it was a kiddie comic or a serious comic in tone and was told "drawn like Amazing Spider-Man" but they don't shy away from what happens if Hulk had just his fill of Doc Ock and punched him in the face. Looks like a dini-verse cartoon but I have read most of the comic (my CBR and PB torrent days died before the comic did) and can say that it does get a bit hosed up but not over the top or gratuitous but it does ride that line at times. It handled a variety of storylines and grew as the main character did. Starts off more teen as the Invincible is that awkward teen discovering his powers and place in the world. As he grows up the world gets darker and more complex as that is pretty much how life goes. World doesn't just start to get awful when you hit puberty, it always was. Also: as far as contrast between tone and occasional brutal violence Conrad_Birdie posted:Again, the dichotomy is the point Who does this appeal to? I loved the piss out of it as a tween and teen. Pretty much anyone who grew up with the dini-verse should enjoy the animation. I don't think parents now would let their under 10 kids see it but teens to Millenials should be an easy sell. Stoners? People who like animation but don't have to have the anime style? Adventuretime handled tons of serious subjects while keeping the kiddie style (sorta) animation. Rick and Morty has far more gratuitous gore. I don't think the show's audience is THAT limited. I enjoyed the crap out of it at least. edit: Doom2020! fucked around with this message at 00:38 on Mar 27, 2021 |

HardKase posted:I have never read the comic but have seen the first 3 episodes. Not going to spoil anything but never feel bad for guessing. I enjoyed the piss out of this comic back in the day and think a good portion of viewers will like where it heads. Hoping the show is cheap and successful enough to last a few seasons at least as there are certain characters I am dying to see. I still wish I could remember if I peaced out at the end of the "good era" and what exact issue. I hope the comic diverges at least a little as I like to be surprised. Anyone know why they made Seance Dog and not Science Dog? Is it because the comic was a Tom Strong homage?

Thank you for this. I've been meaning to check out how it ends. Still have fond memories of this comic and looking forward to seeing how this series works out. Rewatched the first three eps and just as entertaining. Still like the Diniverse animation and glad they went with this style. Thank you Seth Rogan for taking time out from trolling Ted Cruz to continue to make television.

Considering who the voice actor is that HAS to be deliberate and a funny take. "Goddamit another dimensional invasion? What do you mean the Prince of Wykandia wants a private chat about some Dutch Smuggler? Send that to Chen over on the 4th floor. UFO spotted over Las Vegas? loving hell...get the doves."

Open Source Idiom posted:The Boys is more of a satire, interested in the horror of the ubermensch. I like that comparison. Love the Boys but it takes the piss out of everything, including itself. Heard the Boys comic was even more rough about it. Invincible will always be that comic from my teens that weird bridge between reading kid comics and more serious fare. I read a ton of comics of varying types at that time but there was something special about Invincible and I can't even tell you why. Now I'm a bit sad I never finished it. edit: Weird semi related comics Question for you guys. I know Disney owns all Marvel but did they get Spider-Man yet? Just wondering if there was a possibility for crossovers with different company characters. DC is all Warner Brothers correct? Who owns Hellboy/BPRD? Lots of seeds planted and I wonder how thing will go down between OmniMan and the missus. Also wonder how Robot will play out as this show might go different than expected. All that said moment of the show: BATTLE BEAST!!! I marked out so hard. Heard the voice and I turned 5 again.

Zaphod42 posted:I thought about it but didn't say it, but if they were *that* high up in the atmosphere you wouldn't really be able to breathe there either, there's like 0% oxygen and the air is super thin. I guess maybe with superpowers you can, psh. Thanks for clarifying as I wanted to be 100% so was trying to avoid doing either. Weird as this is the first time I actually read a non mainstream comic they made a tv show about. Unless they do a Grendel, Hellboy/BPRD (again) or Milestone series I don't think I'll have to worry about that again. Let me know if I ever come close but I will try and avoid that like hell as I love seeing first timers reactions and theories. I still hold out hope that this will show will diverge from the comics as I want to be surprised too. Love how the naive well meaning hero got completely played. His father is an rear end in a top hat but was right about this one thing. Titan mentioned Mark fighting a guy in an elephant costume but we haven't seen that in the show right? So Robot talking to the clone brothers: some of you guys think he is going to clone one of the Guardians to find out the truth behind Nolan. This episode showed you need a seperate living brain to transfer knowledge So what do you guys think now? Do you think Robot is bad still or what might his motivation be? Robot did seem awfully concerned with his injured team-mates (even tolerates Rex for who knows why). Is Robot a good guy? Is he some kind of super AI? What is your guys take on Omniman himself. Is he a good guy, albeit ruthless? Was he mind controlled or what were his motivations? Doom2020! fucked around with this message at 22:06 on Apr 9, 2021 |

Ccs posted:People who get mad about the Queen are absolutely the funniest people. I completely and utterly understand devout loyalty to the Queen and the whole Monarchy in general if you are 85 or above and white. You had the Blitz and all the fallout from World War 2, smog times, depression and the decaying Grand Empire of Olde. So yeah - a Tory bloke near or over 100 would definitely talk about sacrifice and stiff upper lip and all that. Anyone else makes me mightily confused. Could you like her? Sure. Could you think she is a decent Queen compared to many in the past? Absolutely. Even a rich white blue blood aged 40-65 should really care less. And to use multiple exclamation and questions marks? That is just decidedly unBRITISH! I am aghast sirrah!

Zaphod42 posted:Yeah I agree, lots of the same feelings. I know I was a poo poo as a teen but I hope I wasn't quite this self absorbed and just willfully arrogantly naive. I probably was. Enjoyed the episode alright but agree on some of the frustration and glad we aren't spending 30 episodes with these characters being this same way. Hoping they stop the secret identity thing as I will 100% back up that, while I know the reasons for it and all, it just feels a bit tired. Tho Atom Even is cool and I can't wait to see where this goes.... I know it will be tragic. Also like Robot's drone talk and wonder how much show Robot uses that, both in battle and day to day affairs? I know if I could make a duplicate sit around meetings about legal and business bollocks I would. Yeah that [spoil stuff] was brutal. Wonder if we will ever see Will's BF again. Making sure I didn't miss it but did Omniman kill Mark Hamill's costume maker? I didn't see it so I'm guessing no. I wonder how cold ShowOmniman will be and if he is conflicted at all with what he has done. I hope Nolan doesn't hurt the missus as she doesn't seem to be just meekly accepting Omni's taking the piss.
