I appreciate the The Third Man reference. I don't know if it was any good, and I don't know if the show overall is any good, but I appreciate the reference.

MJeff posted:Jack McCoy once reference The Third Man in a cross-examination like 15 years ago! It would be a shame to not learn from the best. Anyway, the first episode had a whole "old vs new" thing going on (heh to Stabler being recruited in a museum) and I'm entirely ready for that to interact with the themes about racial politics to create some stuff that's completely off the walls. We already have the "profiling" conversation and Dylan McDermott killing his dad (Manfreddi Sinatra is an amazing name) for being racist towards his ex-wife. You can already see in the distance an arc of Stabler learning to be modern, but not too modern that he doesn't still have his cop instincts to see through the wokeness of the new rich. In the climax he finally gets his confidence back to take a shot and kill the bad guy.

This episode has a great ebb and flow, with Benson giving a stirring speech about implicit bias training for cops, followed by the big break coming from an undercover cop "getting handsy" with a target, and then Benson and Carisi talking tough about the power of the police state.

That concluded quickly and anti-climactically.

fartknocker posted:Like, I think the implication is that guy talked and presumably Benson called the EMTs and he lived, but they went from Benson cancelling the ambulance to commercial and then her and Fin off pursuing the other guy without any mention of shot white guy again so I dunno maybe they just stood there and watched him die who knows it’s SVU anything is possible If you combine it with the contrast between Benson talking about departmental changes and Benson threatening the wife with "you're in the police state now" you've got this thing going on with Benson either getting rid of or losing the rules when poo poo gets real, and possibly losing control. But, you know, lol e: this driving montage whips rear end

I really like the original Law and Order format, but I don't know if the show could be brought back, just on a cultural level. By that I mean partially that in terms of political culture you can't just bring back a 'good cops' show so easily. But, further to that, the original Law and Order show emerged in a cultural context where there was this idea of out of control New York City crime. It was something that was instantly recognizable and compelling in and of itself. And... I think that's kinda gone.

Definitely wasn't dull, though. I think you're right about Dobbs being there for one season, seemed like a competent but boring dude. Peter Stone's characterization of "extremely ripped former MLB player." In one of the earlier episodes of his run, it opens with him being melancholy during a threesome.

Solution to the problematic nature of Elliott Stabler: have him work as a PI for defence lawyers where he beats up corrupt cops to get the real story.

I am mildly impressed they managed to make this episode of Law and Order (S20E20, "The Taxman Cometh") about the Bush tax cuts. That's a level of contrivance that's worth appreciating.

Just watched the last episode of Law and Order classic. Two thoughts: One is that the bit at the end with the alarm ringing and no other noise is pretty good. The other is that the big break in the case comes from Lindsay Vonn. Congratulations to Lindsay Vonn, who broke the final case in Law and Order classic.
