(I know Drawfee is a Youtube channel, but they're pretty podcast-adjacent and don't really have "shows", so I put this in RGD instead of TVIV)

Drawfee (originally "Morning Drawfee") is a collective of cool artists who draw improvisational art based on weird fan suggested prompts (like style mashups and trying to draw pop culture that they've never seen). Their art ranges from silly to incredibly impressive. They mostly came from CollegeHumor & Dorkly, but have been independent for over a year after the big CH layoff, and now rely on their Patreon. They also have a Drawfee Extra channel for occasional streams.

Co-created by Nathan Yaffe (who is still on the channel) and Caldwell Tanner (who isn't), the current roster now Nathan, Karina Farek, Jacob Andrews and Julia Lepetit, as well as recurring guests. They're all cool, funny people with pretty varied styles, but typically Julia's is the one people talk about most because she has an insane talent for making what's in her head come alive (like the time she taught herself Blender just to do a speed drawing). They're not just great videos for artists, they're also really chill videos to put on in the background or watch at 2x speed. New episodes are usually posted on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

I think a good recent episode of theirs was their fast food mascot redesigns, it does a good job of differentiating the hosts' styles-

That episode reminded me of how underrated Jacob is, and I think it's because he's just so consistent that you don't really notice until he experiments. He's improved a lot too. I assume being Julia's partner has probably helped him branch out more.

And I love that Julia did both a whimsical classic BK and an insane dark one. The only way it could be more Julia is if she drew a background.

I love how they'll do crazy goofy poo poo for weeks on end that kind of hides some of their talents, but then every once in a while they'll pull out an episode like Turning Famous Paintings Into Anime from a couple weeks ago, where all four of them just bust out AMAZING ART.

Usually it's in the ones where they just comment over a speed recording because the paintings took them like 8 hours each, but they're always winners.

Phylodox posted:

It doesn’t help that Karina apparently gets a lot of negative poo poo on Twitter. Like, equal parts people trashing her and infantilizing her.
The show did a "Karina is baby" thing for a while, but of course when a fandom runs with something from the show they like, they run an ironman marathon with it. A similar thing happened with infantilizing Griffin on MBMBaM a while back.

Drawfee Extra posted a Twitch video of the team playing Gartic Phone, which is a pretty fun game that I recommend if you like Jackbox-type stuff.

I feel like within the last year in particular, Drawfee has regularly exposed me to weird internet culture poo poo I never would've heard of otherwise.

No matter how many times they make the joke, I always laugh at "____. Who needs them? They're just like us!"

DeepBlueInk did the Drawfee/McElroy board game episode. I like how the boardroom is full of people who weren't even there. Travis never did Polygon stuff, Karina & Julia weren't working at Drawfee yet, and Jacob was a regular guest but not in the episode.

Julia's got a new pay-what-you-want comic about her experience in a past relationship with a narcissist. It's really relatable if you've ever had an emotionally manipulative significant other/friend/family member. The real gut-punch for me was "We still have mutual friends who don't believe me." :smith:

After reading this, I really appreciate how supportive her relationship with Jacob seems to be. It sucks to go through something like that and it's hard to recover from it afterward.

Anyone catch this week's Tuesday episode before it was taken down?

It was other gods in the Hades art style, but it was taken down because the guest didn't do any research and had Julia draw one that is still worshipped (Shiva), which isn't portrayed at all the way they described. They were going to edit around it and post the rest of the episode without that part, but it turns out a lot of people also had problems with the guest's language containing casual misogyny, so they deleted the whole thing. Which I get - they called every character a bitch or slut a bunch of times, as I guess a term of endearment, but it didn't come off that way.

Here's the Reddit thread about it.

Yeah, that was clearly the actual problem. But the other thing sticklefifer mentioned about people not liking the "misogynistic language" seems like a smoke-screen for something else.

The guest was enby, and Drawfee's fans are very pro-LGBTQ+, but it was more that the guest was repeatedly calling every woman they mentioned as "this bitch" and "that slut" that put some people off.

I had no idea Heathcliff had devolved into a surrealist techno-nightmare over the years. Why does he have a drone and a robot? Why is Garbage Ape a thing? I guess you have to get weird to get noticed in comics anymore, but holy poo poo. :pwn:

Mentioning this because this bit came back briefly on last week's stream: There was a stream in March where Julia talked about a guy in the theater when they saw The Batman, and Nathan's delivery of "no more lies" randomly enters my head a potentially unhealthy amount during the day.

There was also a recent Drawfee collaborative charity stream on ProZD's channel where they rated anime husbands and wives, which is probably not going to be posted on Drawfee's Youtube since SungWon Cho was hosting it.
