It's like you see a news article "Man arrested with FIVE THOUSAND ROUNDS of ammunition"

Like, if anyone owns a 22 they've probably got that just in their range bag.

Man arrested with A SHOEBOX FULL of ammunition, wait, that doesn't get as many clicks, hmm...

Reminds me of my last deployment where they were tracking monthly hard FOD found. Well, one month they found a box of washers that someone had left out on the flight deck, and counted every single washer as a separate instance of hard FOD. So the monthly totals went 15, 13, 21, 827, 12, 10...

Campaign medal is for service in theater, not direct combat. There are a lot of other awards for that and a whole bunch of sour britches from CABs handed out in Iraq and Afghanistan a decade ago.

I just learned I'm getting both OIR and Afghanistan campaign medals for... flying in vaguely the same geographical area as those places. A few times we even flew close enough to see land! I'm glad this proves to the VFW how combat experienced I am.

Naturally the time we spent evacuating Somalia, which was way more along the lines of actual combat missions than anything else we did, counts for nothing.

Reminder that the plan for dealing with Queen Elizabeth's death is completely bonkers:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/16/what-happens-when-queen-elizabeth-dies-london-bridge

quote:

Britain’s commercial radio stations have a network of blue “obit lights”, which is tested once a week and supposed to light up in the event of a national catastrophe. When the news breaks, these lights will start flashing, to alert DJs to switch to the news in the next few minutes and to play inoffensive music in the meantime. Every station, down to hospital radio, has prepared music lists made up of “Mood 2” (sad) or “Mood 1” (saddest) songs to reach for in times of sudden mourning. “If you ever hear Haunted Dancehall (Nursery Remix) by Sabres of Paradise on daytime Radio 1, turn the TV on,” wrote Chris Price, a BBC radio producer, for the Huffington Post in 2011. “Something terrible has just happened.”

It's pretty telling that when I saw this headline:

The Klan existed in Northern California in the late 90s, I don't know about now but white supremacist groups and strong racist sentiment have always been a thing in California. Orange County is one of the most blood red voting blocks in the nation, so big shocker this is being done there.

my first interpretation was that the police were the ones attending/organizing the rally.

Who the gently caress would mean "I'm going to execute you via the electric chair" vs "I'm going to tase you?"

I gotta agree, it really sounds a power tripping cop salivating over the thought of using a taser. That's exactly the macho euphemism I can imagine them having for it.

"You're going to go to death row for a traffic stop and be executed in 15-20 years" feels like more of a stretch and too abstract of a threat considering the rest of the cop's behavior.

Anyways, here's the first thing I've seen about timing on the full-blown approval of the COVID vaccines. TLDR: Companies need to submit 6-months of full data, then the FDA usually takes about 6 months after that for the full-blown approval. Moderna/Pfizer/J&J probably go full-blown approved by the end of the year.

https://www.10news.com/news/coronavirus/in-depth-how-full-fda-approval-would-impact-vaccine-mandates-competition

So it sounds like Biden could make it mandatory for the military tomorrow, but he probably figures that the cost of the inevitable right wing shitstorm isn't worth it if it's expected to get full authorization in a few months anyway.

There are already some incentives in place to get vaccinated; mostly in the form of not having to ROM on the back side of out-of-area leave. A CO can't explicitly deny leave solely based on vaccination status, but not having to ROM for 10 days can factor in to whether or not it's feasible to approve a leave request. Right now the official guidance, at least on the Navy side, is that people don't need to ROM if they're a close contact of a potential COVID case. This is a big deal because it's not the one guy who gets COVID that fucks up your unit, it's the dozen people who are close contacts and also have to ROM that brings things to a grinding halt.

I got Moderna and was just a little sore in the arm for a day. Getting #2 in a week and a half. It's a pretty big deal for air crew because if you get COVID, you're grounded until NAMI can run you through a full set of pulmonary tests to make sure your lungs aren't swiss cheese. Even just getting the shot itself is a 3-day down, compared to 12 hours for flu shots.

I still find it kind of surreal that a country can just *yoink* everything on a cargo ship if it wants to. I mean I guess that's the benefit to being a sovereign power, but jeez.

What would happen if a superjumbo cruise ship got stuck? (I have no idea if cruise ships actually go through the Suez canal much) Do they get to ransom the passengers? Enslave the staff? Do they keep all the passengers' luggage and all the booze and stuff from the onboard mall?

You're saying this as if the republicans haven't already been doing it for some time. Apparently something like 100 something federal judges ended up being handed to Trump due to the senate not bothering with a lot of obama's nominees. The Republicans also showed that if a Supreme Court seat becomes vacant under a Democrat president, with Republicans in the senate, they'll hold it vacant until the next R president.

Yeah, republicans have made it clear that they'll do whatever the hell they want if given the opportunity, so gently caress 'em. Add 15 seats to the court. Put Greta Thunberg on there. Put Obama on there; Barack if there are no other options, but ideally Sasha or Malia. Appoint a lesbian black/latina communist just to see how many aneurisms they can cause for the Fox News staff. As far as I'm concerned it's been game on since Merrick Garland got stonewalled.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if the fraud aspect outweighed the benefits of the sheer simplicity and reliability of using physical cards to track this. Any digital method of doing it would have been by necessity thrown together at the last minute and would have a very high chance of loving something up - just look at how well the ACA website rollout went, and that was something they actually had time to plan for and develop. With a card you don't have to log in to a website or set up an account or try to get text message notifications working, you can just stick it on your fridge as a reminder for when your second shot is scheduled. There's a lot of unappreciated value in that.

Disney, well known for only catering to grown adults. Definitely no chance this would normalize racist caricatures in the minds of young kids.

I forget where I first read this, but it really makes these peoples' mindset clear when you substitute their use of "political correctness", and now "wokeness", with "treating people with respect".

I love Disney World, but treating people with respect is ruining the experience.

The problem is, I’m not traveling across the country and paying thousands of dollars to watch someone I do not know treated with respect.

The next time I ride Jungle Cruise I will not be thinking about the gloriously entertaining puns of the skippers, I will be thinking about Disney’s treating people with respect. That’s a mood killer.

When my family rides Pirates now, each of the changed scenes takes us out of the illusion because they remind us of reality and treating people with respect that forced the changes.
