Aaaaaaand here's the part that made my teeth itch:

quote:

It was not surprising to some observers that the wagons didn’t circle around Gaetz in the explosive 24 hours after the scandal, even as the congressman produced documents that lent some weight to his extortion claims. “I don’t think a lot of people are going to go out of their way to defend him, especially with this outlandish-sounding defense,” one GOP staffer said. “I don’t think you’ll find a lot of people who are desperate to keep him involved in Republican politics.”

The cartoonishly scandalous perception of Gaetz is so commonplace that sometimes it’s visible, literally, in the halls of Congress. A Hill source sent The Daily Beast a photo of a trash bin outside Gaetz's office as lawmakers cleared out their offices at the end of a recent session. At the top of the heap was an empty Costco-size box of “Bareskin” Trojan condoms.

Usually Congress is loving people, not people loving in Congress.

We have no idea how long the vaccines last because there's not a magical number of antibodies or T-cells that fight off a COVID-19 infection. It's not like you can stick a human on a dyno or in a salt chamber to speed up the corrosion, but morons are using the 6-month confirmation to whine about it or push more anti-vax poo poo.

My paperwork had me fill out that it was good for a year, but it was clearly a check-the-box exercise. We don't even know if you need a double-shot of Moderna/Pfizer in a year/two years/whenever, or if a single dose can function as the booster, or if you can get a completely different vaccine.

I've been thinking about it recently, and I don't think in this case places pulling money from Georgia will matter. It will certainly work on culture war bullshit that local Republicans use to get elected, but the recent election probably scared the party that they'll lose their rear end on the next go around of state elections, and they'd rather maintain their position no matter what the cost to Georgia is.

I think the only counter to Georgia Republicans basically deciding to gently caress their own state is noise. Making companies do poo poo, continuing to yell about voting restrictions, and constantly publishing interviews and stories about the bullshit that local Republicans are pulling. At this point, it's all about the 2022 midterms when a rapidly-growing Atlanta can basically drown out the rest of the state in the statewide elections. With Democrats likely to in-person campaign this time, and in-person helping voters with absentee requests around the new bullshit rules, it's a matter of making sure the Democrats turn out again.

After all, not much pisses off voters than a party deliberately trying to make them not vote. Hell, Pennsylvania Democrats managed to avert 100K absentees getting tossed (the dumb inner-envelope signature thing) with a shitload of ads and education, just do the same in Georgia plus remind voters who made the new dumb, bullshit rules.

https://twitter.com/oneunderscore__/status/1379117524026015751?s=19

There's a solid chunk of the country that will simply not give a flying gently caress about scientific research and data. So they're looking for whatever or whoever confirms their bullshit, which is usually randos on Facebook in a chicken-or-egg cycle of bullshit. Throw on top of that:

https://twitter.com/NYTNational/status/1379044932413968388?s=19

So we're lucky that the vaccines are so good that the hospitalization rates of The Olds are flatlining even with hesitancy. The real trouble is if the facebookers get infected and birth a supervariant and we don't have the time to get boosters ready. That's also why US governmental people are already putting together a vaccination strategy for the whole world once the US is done because each country could easily export a variant here.

It's not quite that bad. Chances are that the Biden administration finds creative legal ways to get around the dumb poo poo, like the "loan" of AZ/Oxford doses to Mexico/Canada. Right now, every dose of J&J/Moderna/Pfizer gets into an arm or is earmarked for an arm somewhere in the United States. Nothing's wasted except for the botched Johnsons (because who wants a botched Johnson?).

US demand for vaccines is still near-infinite for another few months, so nothing is gathering dust on shelves for very long. By the time we run out of arms, the Biden folks will figure out if the nonsense the Trump administration agreed to was due to companies' legal concerns, classic greed, or both and act accordingly to fix the problem and get the doses to the rest of the world. The Vanity Fair article heavily implies that the DoD folks took the route of "We don't have time for this legal poo poo, we needs these contracts loving done or other countries get these first doses" and there's now time for legal wrangling to unwind that.
