I convinced myself that they’re waiting to announce the official death of Overwatch League because that production team is running the World Cup. If they do decide to keep some amount of the team for Community Cups or whatever in the future, they gotta do something about the brackets guy.

Well... I'll be honest, I'm just totally loving devastated. The Spark and Chinese Overwatch don't get a happy ending. The only silver lining I can think of is that maybe this inspires greater investment in the scene from the Saudis, given that they're essentially buying it from Blizzard as they've done so many other sports. But that's a pretty tainted silver lining. I'll go to my grave believing that Blizzard hosed over the Spark and Chinese Overwatch for the past year.

Hoping WDG gets to continue hosting Overwatch broadcasts separate from whatever ESL does. I don't think the esports has a shot if they just move the whole league from USA to KSA Really depressing to think this is likely the last we'll ever see of this Chinese squad, and possibly from the Chinese region unless Blizzard gets their act together asap e: holy lol Cloudy is gonna be farming all the impressions from salty KSA fans all week. I think that Jacob Wolf report is right; the economics of esports are grim. They're so hosed that there're only two realistic paths forward for it to have enough money in the ecosystem to operate as a viable career field for folks: - Being propped up by the developers - Being propped up by external parties We'll probably always see a baseline level of the former, especially for new games that achieve some popularity, but from what I see the really big investments have either been scaled back to control costs or they're currently getting swallowed as a marketing cost. That's only viable as long as those companies remain wildly successful and the games remain wildly popular, which isn't a given for any company or game. Even League is falling off; the American branch seems like it's on death's door. The more recent growth in esports stemmed from the latter (support from external parties), and specifically venture capital, but that's almost entirely dried up. Saudi investment is basically the same thing except that the funding source is more stable and more obviously gross (although who the gently caress knows what a bunch of those venture capital companies were up to). I don't begrudge esport fans having a bad taste in their mouth about Saudi money; fans of other sports/entertainment enterprises have had the same reaction as it happened to them. I don't like it either, but realistically much of OWL's (relative) longevity stemmed from being propped up by China, which is another autocratic country with a horrible human rights record. So, I kind of feel like it's a lateral move. It's not going to be enough to drive me away. If Shy, Leave, or Guxue stick around in the scene, I'll probably follow them to their next team.

quite possibly the entire overwatch community outside of saudi arabia was disappointed when china lost, but you gotta give sa props for winning over basically 3 entire owl teams. finland deserves some recognition for beating korea too, that was wild. eu contenders are the kings of this tournament this was def the best day of games that the world cut has ever produced even if the the villains won in the end

Well that was a pretty awesome set of games from semi-finals through to the end of the final I actually totally forgot about the OW world cup as I haven't played the game in many years or even followed the League lately, but I just happened to catch Finnish tabloid news hyping up Finland in semi-finals so got in right in time (missed the action until and including first day of Blizzcon, but seems like the epic games were saved for last). Proud of my boys getting a medal, obviously it left a big "what if" mark as they were pretty much one pick and team fight win away from Finals and Saudi-Arabia even helped them with a classic C9 but oh well... The Finals were probably the first time I've rooted for Saudi-Arabia in sports or whatever but I tend to go for the underdog and this was pretty epic as such. Good stuff, great entertainment and I could easily pretend that the game is as big as it was when I left it

Blizzard better hurry up on laying down the new ecosystem, assuming they want the current players and fanbase to still be around for it. e: a Blizzard rep has formally confirmed the dissolution of the Overwatch League to ggrecon quote:“We are transitioning from the Overwatch League and evolving competitive Overwatch in a new direction. I don't think we're headed to an exclusive Saudi run league at least (for now...) but also there's players that will definitely make the jump to the Esportswashing League while the grass is still green. e: thanks, Toronto Defiant Man https://twitter.com/thiiinkiing/status/1722337672335921325 Ignis fucked around with this message at 21:49 on Nov 8, 2023 |

WE'RE SO BACK Our esports efforts in 2024 will be multifaceted and the first program that we’re excited to introduce to you all is the Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS). The OWCS is our new premiere international competitive circuit open to players across North America (NA), Europe, Middle East, and North Africa (EMEA), and Asia. The 2024 season will feature multiple competitive stages where each region will have its own set of Open Qualifiers, giving players the ability to form their own teams and battle it out for their place in the Main Event. The stages will culminate in two live, in-person international events, bringing the regions together for the pinnacle of Overwatch play on the largest stage ever for Overwatch Esports.

Nah still dead https://twitter.com/adashtra/status/1749847604681150863?t=bRc4atRTwsznBkyCEv_djA&s=19 There's a small chance Australia being missing is a clerical error because Australia is listed as an eligible FACEIT country, but that's still one hell of an omission. Herstory Begins Now posted:didn't they make a ton of money selling franchises? and now they don't even have to support the OWL anymore The real answer is "we don't know the exact financials since the reporting has been pretty spotty, but probably." - The first 12 teams were supposed to pay a fee of $20 million: $240 million - Then the 8 expansion teams were supposed to pay a fee of $35 million: $280 million - Twitch supposedly paid $90 million for broadcast rights for the first two years - It's kind of unclear if YouTube actually paid for OWL broadcast rights, or if that was an in-kind deal where they gave Activision Blizzard a discount on cloud computing services; also, that deal included CDL and Hearthstone too, so I'm just not going to include it at all because it's a big question mark So that would've been $610 million. But we also know that teams did not ultimately pay the full franchise fees. This is where the reporting is spottiest, but I think that teams actually paid ~$10 million each before the remainder was rescinded a year or two ago, so that would drop it to $290 million. The league had some sponsors for a few years too, and there'd be some profit from ticket sales, merch sales, and token sales. I think the latter three profit sources would be pretty tiny, though. Let's call it $10 million and bring it to $300 million in revenue. Activision Blizzard paid each team a $6 million termination fee to end the league early, so that would drop it to $180 million in profit before factoring in production and marketing expenses. So, how much did OWL cost to produce for six seasons? The answer is probably "A LOT" for the first two years and then "very little" for the next four. We've heard that the Blizzard Arena was wildly expensive. We've heard that OWL was spending money like crazy for the first couple of years. My hunch is that Activision Blizzard didn't lose money, but they probably profited a lot less than they hoped or we might think. That isn't factoring in indirect positive effects on their financials (did the esport work to promote the game so that people bought it and bought unrelated skins or whatever? maybe! who knows!), incidentally.
