Dobu has his flaws, but he's at least a professional. Forces of 'justice' trying to hunt him down? Part of the job. But he's not gonna kill someone he doesn't have to. Also, Odokawa and Kakihana's friendship was summed up perfectly in the drive home. "You've been pathetic since then."

My theory: The eraser was never one-of-a-kind, the seller just only had one. And after it went for a massive amount, got more thinking they'd sell for the same. Young Shirakawa was the other bidder, and got it much cheaper than she was expecting when it 'went back up for sale'.
