Stay tuned for a big superleague announcement... https://www.fourfourtwo.com/news/report-european-super-league-to-be-re-launched-today-featuring-10-teams

quote:

The European Super League is set to be relaunched today, featuring 10 of the major players from last time around.

That's the dramatic rumour according to Vozpópuli, who say that Real Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Chelsea are all on board once more.

Of last year's 12 founders, north London sides Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are notably absent.

According to the rumours, the founders have this time decided that the Super League should be an open competition. There is, of course, understandable opposition from many of European football's biggest leaders to the idea of the competition.

RMCSport claim that UEFA are planning to ban all Super League clubs from European competition should the competition go ahead, while LaLiga president Javier Tebas has reportedly claimed the three Super League clubs "lie more than Putin. They think that all national leagues must be dumb. It's an insult."

Ignore my doomerism, I don't think better things are possible
I don't see how the Super League gets off the ground as an open competition. The whole point of the first one was that it gave the European teams a chance to play in a competition that isn't overshadowed by the Premier League which will help them grow, and the Premier League owners get guaranteed income.

An open Super League is basically the same as the current CL, but you let Perez and Agnelli make the rules instead of UEFA.

That and there's got to be something in the fine print that means this "open competition" absolutely favors the ten founding clubs.

Also because the World Cup had to be held now, the World Club Cup is apparently going to be held in Morocco in February in Real Madrid's schedule, and presumably that of any other European or Asian team invited, is already full.

Calling all legacy fans: super league is back

quote:

The pillars of a reimagined ESL would include a commitment to ‘open competition’ with no guaranteed permanent members. There would also be an expansion from the original 16 elite clubs to 60-80 teams, all still playing in their domestic leagues. A divisional structure would be implemented, meaning promotion and relegation. The ESL would commit to investing in and growing the women’s game and there would be guaranteed €400m annually in solidarity payments to clubs outside the ESL and the grassroots game.

We heard the fans. 16 teams playing each other 50 times a year would kill football. So we banged our heads together and came up with the champions league but you can get relegated

2Time TRP Sack Race Champion

So is the idea to make your initial top division all the usual suspects, throttle relegation after the fact, and then ignore all the divisions below the top one in terms of coverage/money? Seems to be in this weird spot where it’s too close to the current setup for anyone to be incentivised to jump over from the existing system but also everyone’s now looking for the catch so they can’t show their hand until they do away with the existing structures first and then can change their rules without retaliation

Well the teams that are incentivised are clubs like Liverpool this year, Spurs, Chelsea who are rich but look liable to kiss champions league. Guarantee the same money for 6 or 7 richest clubs and they’ll happily kick the rest down down a well.

The idea is it's the Champions League but even more biased towards top teams.

the existing problem is that nobody watches Serie A and La Liga is just that star trek episode with the black-and-white people fighting the white-and-black people, so you would have to be, like, super financially illiterate and incompetent to make a Super League that doesn't actually include any of the popular anglophone teams

and fortunately nobody in Serie A or La Liga is financially illiterate and incompetent
