So much of the web is experienced through a handful of sites owned by massive conglomerates, and it's all quite boring. The age of the personal website has been over for some time now, but I reckon there must be some informative, funny, artistic, or otherwise unique one-off sites still out there. This is a thread for cool websites (and yes i;ve already seen that gaping butthoel guy. Please don't post that)

Fairly well known, but shoutout to https://www.etymonline.com Still just Douglas Harper and a scattering of volunteers updating twenty years later. Related hyperlinks in the text allow for some lengthy tunneling. Words are fun!

Lazy rear end OP couldn't even come up with one example to start us off with. For that I'm going to post a random monster/anime after this post. Anyway I like https://www.wallpaperflare.com/. You can search wallpapers for your desktop, and it uses wizardry to size any image to whatever your desktop resolution is. Nothing required. No signup, no "please turn of adblocker", nothing. Just works good!

A few computers ago (and 1-2 decades) I remember there were a handful of clever websites which featured strange art and little text, and you would click around and find "hidden" actionables that would play strange sounds or animations or bring you to new pages. They were pretty good. Around the shockwave era. I don't know if those are still a thing. I always think wistfully about the wild west of the internet before it became ubiquitous. I miss websites sometimes. There used to be all kinds of specific fansites for every little thing made by random people and while most of them were something awful, the internet actually feels smaller, duller and more soul-sucking without them. It's also depressing to go back to those sites that are still standing and seeing all the broken links.

They also used to make these super elaborate animated official sites for things like movies and such, and now they just don't bother. I'm probably sounding very "old man yells at clouds" but the web feels like a much less fun place than it used to.
