Same, had forgotten just how cheesy in the best way a lot of the game's dialog is. Love how... overly large everything is in Raveshaw's mansion, classic older fps design at work. Honestly didn't really bother much with the whole stealth aspect with this mission back in the day, and just went to town with the flame and chem throwers instead of using the pistol, although again was also playing on normal difficulty so enemies were not HP walls.

Mission 07: Obelisk of Oppression

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vO4ZoXF203w
Renegade 07: Obelisk of Oppression

With Mendoza dead and Sydney Mobius rescued, it's time to reunite with the Dead-6 team and evacuate this region before NOD forces have a chance to collect their wits and attempt to prevent any escape by Havoc and company. If he wasn't already, Havoc has definitely become Most Wanted for any and all Brotherhood forces - Dead or Alive.

Location: Unknown, France
Objective: Evacuate the Tiberium Scientist and the Dead-6 team.

Author's note: Massive brain far at the end when I wound up confusing the SSM with a Stealth Tank. The actual SSMs play no part in the game aside from this mission, iirc, and I think I was just too focused on the Stealth Tank.

Name: Mendoza
Aliases: Unknown
Affiliation: NOD / Black Hand
Occupation: Mercernary/Assassin [DECEASED]
Voiced/Played by: Gregg Berger

Former Operative of the Sword of Chagall, he was hired by the Black Hand faction of the Brotherhood of Nod. Killed by Havoc while attempting to prevent his, and Sydney Mobius', escape of Gen. Raveshaw's compound.

Name: Nick Parker
Aliases: Havoc, Five Alive
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Commando
Voiced/Played by: Wally Wingert

Havoc is a Commando within the Global Defense Initiative's forces, ready and willing to take any fight to the Brotherhood of Nod. Commandeers (un)friendly vehicles in record time. Delivers terrible one-liners on purpose, or so he claims. Has a thing of Sakura. Learned to shoot left-handed, for sport.

Name: Sydney
Aliases: None
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Civilian
Voiced/Played by: Leigh Allyn Baker

The tutorial guide for health and armor. Sydney Mobius is the daughter of Dr. Ignatio Mobius. Unlike her father's purely scientific desire to unlock the secrets of Tiberium, Sydney is driven to utilize it as a weapon.

Name: Nigel Grant
Aliases: Gunner, The [REDACTED] Gun
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Member of Dead-6 | Weapons Expert
Voiced/Played by: Andre Sogliuzzo

Future Majima expy, Gunner is the weapons expert for the tutorial. Stands 5'10" tall and weighing 74kg, according to what I can make out of his bio. Nigel Grant was born on the wrong side of London. Nigel was seconded to GDI through the British SBS (Special Boat Services), the British equivalent of the American Navy SEALs.

Name: Shai Aviv
Aliases: Hotwire
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Member of Dead-6 | Vehicle Expert
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Hotwire is the vehicle expert for the tutorial. She's supposedly dead, standing 5'10" tall and weighing 74kg, according to what I can make out of her bio. Shai Aviv is a tough-as-nails commando and a woman of few words. She came to GDI from the MOSSAD, where she served with distinction.

Name: Erich Wulfe
Aliases: Patch
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Member of Dead-6 | Explosives Expert
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Patch is the explosives expert of the Dead-6 team. Stands 5'10" tall and weighing 74kg, according to what I can make out of his bio. Born in Berlin, Erich Wulfe found himself street-wise at an early age. He came to the attention of GDI as a member of the GS9, a German paramilitary/counter-terrorist organization.

Name: Dariel MacInnis
Aliases: Deadeye
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Member of Dead-6 | Expert Marksman
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Patch is the explosives expert of the Dead-6 team. Stands 5'10" tall and weighing 74kg, according to what I can make out of his bio. Originally from Scotland, Dariel MacInnis was involved with the Special Air Service before joining GDI. He is a top marksman, with a nearly flawless strike record from 200 meters and beyond.

Black Hand [Heavy Weapons]
Weapon: Various
Purpose: Heavy Weapons Specialist

Black Hand Heavy Weapons Soldiers are Special Forces units. Their long range skills are deadly, so keep moving when dealing with these adversaries. High powered or automatic weaponry is recommended.

Stealth Tank
Weapon: AG/AA Missiles
Purpose: Anti-Vehicle/Anti-Aircraft Vehicle

Lightly armored and fairly maneuverable, the Stealth Tank is invisible when not firing except for the tread marks and engine noise. Look for these signatures.

Surface-to-Surface Missile Launcher [SSM]
Weapon: Long-Range Missiles
Purpose: Long-Range Artillery

The counterpart to the Mobile Artillery, the SSM Launcher is effective for removing vehicles but has a harder time dealing with infantry. Consider taking it out at close range.

Gun Emplacement
Purpose: Base Defense

The Gun Emplacement is a standard tool for manning a defensive position. Easily inserted via airdrop or transport, this weapon can be a daunting target if you are on foot.

Rocket Emplacement
Purpose: Base Defense

Specifically designed to eliminate heavy targets, the Rocket Emplacement is an excellent defensive weapon for bases and other facilities. If at all possible, approach them from the rear.

Airstrip
Purpose: Production Facility

This building allows Nod Cargo Transport Places to air-drop vehicles into the base. Destroy it to cripple Nod vehicle production.

Helicopter Pad
Purpose: Production Facility

This building allows Apaches to refuel. Destroy it to hamper Nod air strikes and Apache encounters.

Aftermath:

-Sydney Mobius Rescued
-Obelisk Destroyed, SSM Launchers Destroyed, Town Liberated
-Town Nuked by NOD, damage minimal.

Maybe NOD was all out of their normal tactical nukes and used a 50s old Davy Crocket? Although even one of those probably would have done slightly more then the one from this mission.
Anyway, kinda of a fillerish mission here honestly, although man, had forgotten how... intense Mendoza's death is. Burned to a crisp and then flattened by a rock, yikes. Also, even after all this time will never get used to the sudden smash cut to the score screen the utter instant the final mission objective is cleared. As for how easily the Obelisk went down, from the looks of things it might not have had line of sight on your tank thanks to the building?

The Obelisk (and equivalent GDI defense structure) actually has a pretty short range. In multiplayer this was usually corrected for, or the attempt was made at least, by putting them around a corner so you couldn't shoot at it unless you were within its range.

Huh, didn't know that, would explain a few things in the campaign though, neat.

Loxbourne

But now, tea.
The Obelisk has a lot of player expectations to live up to. It has to have a big loud charge-up (which needs to be given a visual component in an FPS so the player connects the sounds to the incoming shot), it then has to match what it did in C&C1 by instantly killing infantry with an un-dodgeable laser beam.

That's hard to balance around, especially in single-player. So they compensated by having the player first encounter one in vehicles that can take a hit, with NPCs to get hit first. Then giving it a short range so the player can see the charge cycle. By later levels the player knows what it can do and can be expected to seek cover to avoid getting blasted.

Obelisks do have a very flashy interior and basement, but you almost never see it fully powered up and with the lights on. Only the Obelisk at the dam can really be reached on foot with the power still on. There's a big laser cyclotron arrangement that looks very cool.

The GDI equivalent is a very different beast. Hopefully we'll see it in future videos.

An unknown amount of time has passed, and Sydney Mobius has already designed, or probably simply completed, a new prototype combat armor, the Mobius Suit. Thanks to Sydney's knowledge of the experiments they have been conducting under NOD's watchful eye, GDI has been able to pinpoint the likely location where Dr. Mobius and Dr. Petrova.

Location: Unknown, Unknown
Objective: Rescue Sydney Mobius and the other GDI scientists.

Author's note: Really wish there was a Nuclear Beacon to find in this one. This map also features the first actual boss fight, as I don't think Mendoza has anything that is actually hard about him.

The tiberium-based projectile weapons are odd ducks. They're more useful in multiplayer because of how MP works; they're given to GDI to balance NOD having exclusive use of the lasers. They do have their uses, but those uses are entirely anti-infantry and they're never more than mediocre against vehicles. They do chew through infantry health very rapidly though, and in MP that's an asset when the late-game ultra-high-health infantry classes are running around.

Acolytes followed by the Raveshaw boss fight is a terrific one-two punch of annoyance and frustration. If you're looking at the acolyte who shoots you you're momentarily blinded by the tiberium explosion and the indicator from the tick damage. I'd say it was a lucky break that Raveshaw grabbed a black hand instead of you but the entire boss fight comes down to luck anyways. He runs faster than you and the only way to "avoid" the grab is to continually trigger flinch animation by shooting him in the head.

Well... that certainly was some interesting audio from those "GDI" prisoners... :aaa: And wow, totally forgot how goofy the Ravenshaw boss fight was, his movement animation is outright silly. Do remember it going pretty similar though, never really figured out a strategy besides just shooting him a bunch, hoping I had enough hp/armor, and eventually winning that way. Said it before but really do like how the game kind of bridges the classic C&C1 designs with the futuristic TS/FS designs. The Black Hand Troops in particular rival the amazing looking NOD infantry of TS/FS, which is saying a lot.
