An outlaw hunting outlaws, a bounty hunter - Let's Play Command and Conquer: Renegade (PC)

Welcome to the fifth installment of this Command and Conquer Anthology Let's Play. Everything you know about Command & Conquer is [nearly] useless here. Strategy? Out the window! Base building? Wanted dead or alive! We're taking this to the First-Person Perspective, as the Commando Nick "Havoc" Parker, although not voiced by Frank Klepacki. This is also the first game in the series that I never played before now. So join me as we continue the romp through Command and Conquer in one of the stranger off-shoots from the roots of the series.

How this will work

Renegade is a far simpler experience compared to some past outings in the C&C universe and, as a result, entries will be shorter and more straight-to-the-point.

What games should we see/expect?

1995 – Command & Conquer
1996 – Command & Conquer – The Covert Operations

1996 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert
1997 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert – Counterstrike
1997 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert – The Aftermath
1998 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert – Retaliation

1999 – Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun
2000 – Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun – Firestorm

2000 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
2001 – Command & Conquer: Yuri's Revenge

2002 – Command & Conquer: Renegade (Or Renegade X)
2003 – Command & Conquer: Generals
2003 – Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour
2007 – Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
2008 – Command & Conquer 3: Kane's Wrath
2008 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3
2009 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 – Uprising
2009 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Commander's Challenge
2010 – Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight

--- I'm not against mods, but I have no clue which ones are good or bad, and will consider adding any to the list upon request ---

I will preface by saying I am not the best strategy player ever (Company of Heroes proved that one!) but I shall attempt to play on the harder difficulties, when available or if possible.

:siren::siren:

And since this entire thing is being done chronologically, that means ABSOLUTELY NO SPOILERS AT ALL ABOUT ANYTHING! :siren::siren: NO. SPOILERS. :siren::siren: Not even tags.

The Command and Conquer series has very little in terms of adaptations or spin-off content, having, I think, one "expanded universe" book sold in 2009, so let's just let things play out as the games intended them to. Thanks!

The year is 199X. The war against the Brotherhood of Nod is in full swing, the conflict now called The First Tiberium War, and the Global Defense Initiative is gaining ground against the Brotherhood and its leader, Kane. Despite the tide of war, it seems only to have emboldened Nod's attempts at merging Man and Tiberium, and the fanaticism on display has only intensified.

The Brotherhood of Nod

Known as The Brotherhood, The Ways of Nod, ShaΖSeer among the tribes of Godan [ref: INTERPOL FILE ARK936 - Aliases of the Brotherhood].

Founded: Date unknown: exaggerated reports place the Brotherhood's founding before 1,800 BC.

Ideology: To unite third-world nations under a pseudo-religious political platform with imperialist tendencies. In actuality, it is an aggressive and popular neo-fascist, anti-West movement vying for total deomination of the world's peoples and resources. Operates under the popular mantra, "Brotherhood, unity, peace".

Current Head of State: Kane; also known as Caine, Jacob (INTERPOL FILE TRX11-12Q); al-Quayym, Amir (MI6 DR-416.52)

Base of Operations: Global. Command posts previously identified at Kuantan, Malaysiaa; somewhere in Ar-Rub' al-Khali, Saudi Arabia; Tokyo, Japan; Caen, France.

Military Strength: Previously believed only to be a smaller terrorist operations, a recent scandal involving United States defense contractors confirms that the Brotherhood is well-equipped and supports significant land, sea, and air military operations.

Economic Strength: Considerable operating assets believed to be in excess of US$255.2 billion, based on audits of seized financial records (see CIA DOCKET 3231.54-776 FIA).

Political Strength: Believed to be the sole backers of the Fist of Allah party in Jordan (52%); United We Stand America party in the United States (12%); Albion First! party in the United Kingdom (25+%), among others. (See Brookings Institution publication A42962-94 for full disclosure.)

Affiliations: Irish Republican Party; Islamic Jihad; Khmer Rouge; others (See document: Brotherhood of Nod Splinter Groups.)

The Global Defense Initiative

Commonly, GDI. Before 1990, known as Special Operations Group Echo, Black Ops 9.

Founded: 12 October 1995, in acordance with the United Nations Global Defense Act (UNGDA)

Ideology: To enforce the United Nations Global Defense Act and upholds the ideals as outlined in the United Nations Charter.

Current Head of State: Brigadier General Mark Jamison Shepherd, Chief of Staff, United Nations Military Command.

Base of Operations: United Nations Military Command center, location REDACTED

Military Strength: Within parameters of the UNGDA, Article V, Section 3A, Paragraph 12.

Economic Strength: Funded by United Nations and various national governments, public organizations, and private enterprise.

Political Strength: Not applicable: operates within parameters of the UNGDA and under the orders of the United Nations Security Council.

Affiliations: United Nations

Voiced/Played by: Wally Wingert

Havoc is a Commando within the Global Defense Initiative's forces, ready and willing to take any fight to the Brotherhood of Nod. Commandeers (un)friendly vehicles in record time. Delivers terrible one-liners on purpose, or so he claims. Has a thing of Sakura. Learned to shoot left-handed, for sport.

Name: Logan Sheppard
Aliases: None

Occupation: Member of Dead-6 | Vehicle Expert
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Hotwire is the vehicle expert for the tutorial. She's supposedly dead, standing 5'10" tall and weighing 74kg, according to what I can make out of her bio. Shai Aviv is a tough-as-nails commando and a woman of few words. She came to GDI from the MOSSAD, where she served with distinction.

Name: Ignatio Mobius
Aliases: None
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Tiberium Expert
Voiced/Played by: Rene Auberjonois

As the only leading expert (that is mentioned) on Tiberium, it stands to reason that people are listening to what the Dr. has to say. Predicts that Tiberium will potentially overrun the entire planet. Serves as the Economic Expert in the tutorial.

Name: Petrova
Aliases: None
Affiliation: NOD
Occupation: Tiberium Scientist / Tiberium-infused Super Soldier
Voiced/Played by: Lori Tritel

Scientist/Civilian and building expert in the tutorial. Tiberium scientist alongside Ignatio and Sydney, she betrayed GDI by orchestrating the capture of her colleagues, as well as the research and development into the Re:Genesis program, a super soldier experiment seeking to tip the scales of war in NOD's favor.

Name: Adriana Maus
Aliases: None
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Assistant to BGen Locke
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Assistant to BGen Locke. Provides intel to the CO.

Name: BGen Locke
Aliases: None
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Commander of the Global Defense Initiative Special Forces
Voiced/Played by: David Lodge

The commanding officer for Havoc and other Special Forces, Brigadier General Locke displays an excellent sense of patience and decor, especially in the face of the more unruly members he commands. Chief officer of GDI Special War Operations, Brigadier General Adam Locke began his military career in the British Army. Locke has commanded Havoc for two years running.

Name: Erich Wulfe
Aliases: Patch
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Member of Dead-6 | Explosives Expert
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Patch is the explosives expert of the Dead-6 team. Stands 5'10" tall and weighing 74kg, according to what I can make out of his bio. Born in Berlin, Erich Wulfe found himself street-wise at an early age. He came to the attention of GDI as a member of the GS9, a German paramilitary/counter-terrorist organization.

Name: Dariel MacInnis
Aliases: Deadeye
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Member of Dead-6 | Expert Marksman
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Patch is the explosives expert of the Dead-6 team. Stands 5'10" tall and weighing 74kg, according to what I can make out of his bio. Originally from Scotland, Dariel MacInnis was involved with the Special Air Service before joining GDI. He is a top marksman, with a nearly flawless strike record from 200 meters and beyond.

Name: Mendoza
Aliases: Unknown
Affiliation: NOD / Black Hand
Occupation: Mercernary/Assassin [DECEASED]
Voiced/Played by: Gregg Berger

Former Operative of the Sword of Chagall, he was hired by the Black Hand faction of the Brotherhood of Nod. Killed by Havoc while attempting to prevent his, and Sydney Mobius', escape of Gen. Raveshaw's compound.

Name: Gen. Raveshaw
Aliases: Unknown
Affiliation: NOD / Black Hand
Occupation: Commanding Officer of the Black Hand.
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Favored by Kane for his devotion to the Brotherhood, Raveshaw was ordered to create and command the Black Hand of Nod as a sign of his fanaticism and loyalty.

Name: Sakura
Aliases: Unknown
Affiliation: NOD(?)
Occupation: Mercenary/Assassin
Voiced/Played by: Mari Weiss

Former member of Dead Six and ex-lover of Havoc, Sakura joined the Brotherhood of Nod, although whether this is for money or out of personal conviction is not known. Is capable of jumping up to 10 feet into the air. Provides critical aid over the course of Havoc's missions, but prefers to remain independent as a means of income.

Name: Kane
Aliases: Caine, Jacob; al-Quayym, Amir
Affiliation: NOD
Occupation: Leader of the Brotherhood of NOD
Voiced/Played by: Joseph David Kucan

The leader of the Brotherhood of Nod, Kane is shrouded by mystery. No one knows much about him, and the mythos surrounding him tells of tales of alternate identities, immortality, or simply rumours and hearsay. Murdered Seth after he tried to usurp control of the Brotherhood of Nod. Discoverer of Tiberium (Unsubstantiated) and believes it is the future of mankind. Appears to always carry a pistol at his side; a Beretta 92FS. May have plans to use the Ion Cannon against GDI. Has a healthy respect for Havoc's talents as a soldier, even if the Commando cannot be recruited into the Brotherhood.

GDI Officer
Weapon: Automatic Pistol/Automatic Rifle
Purpose: Calls in reinforcements

GDI Officers are trained better than enlisted soldiers and have authority to radio Command for reinforcements.

GDI Soldier
Weapon: Automatic Rifle
Purpose: Cannon Fodder

Considered standard assault infantry, GDI soldiers have basic combat training. Their lack of combat education is compensated with automatic weaponry.

GDI Rocket Officer
Weapon: Rocket Launcher
Purpose: Calls in reinforcements

Rocket Soldier Officers have better combat training than their enlisted counterparts and have authority to radio Command for reinforcements.

Engineer
Weapon: Repair Gun
Purpose: Repairs buildings, vehicles, and emplacements

Though excellent at battlefield maintenance, Engineers are not well-suited to combat. Protect your Engineers while they work to repair damaged buildings or emplacements.

GDI Rocket Soldier
Weapon: Rocket Launcher
Purpose: Anti-Vehicle/Building infantry

Though their rate of fire is lackluster, Rocket Soldiers compensate with range and destructive power. They tend to panic when in close proximity to their targets.

Humvee
Weapon: Automatic Machinegun
Purpose: Anti-Infantry Vehicle

Humm-Vees are excellent for fast transport across dangerous terrain. The mounted machine gun is effective against infantry targets, but the light armor is not good for tank engagements.

Medium Tank
Weapon: 120mm Cannon[?]
Purpose: Anti-Vehicle/Building Vehicle

The Medium Tank comes equipped with a heavy-caliber barrel and moderate armor. It is less maneuverable than the Nod Light Tank, but has more firepower.

Transport Helicopter
Weapon: N/A
Purpose: Air Transport

The best tool for extracting and delivering battlefield teams is the Transport Helicopter. Fast and maneuverable, it is the primary choice for air travel.

APC
Weapon: Machine Gun
Purpose: Ground Transport

[NO DATA ENTRY]

ORCA VTOL Assault Craft
Weapon: Air-to-Ground Rockets
Purpose: Assault Aircraft

The Orca vertical take-off and landing craft is one of the most maneuverable air vehicles on the battlefield. It is effective against other air vehicles, but can be used against ground targets.

Black Hand
Weapon: Sniper Rifle
Purpose: Anti-Infantry Infantry

The Black Hand soldier is an elite Special Forces unit with significant weight and power. When dealing with these enemies, expect a higher caliber opponent.

Nod Soldier
Weapon: Automatic Rifle
Purpose: Cannon Fodder

Considered standard assault infantry, Nod soldiers have basic combat training. Chemical weaponry takes down these enemies quickly.

Nod Rocket Soldier
Weapon: Rocket Launcher
Purpose: Anti-Vehicle/Building Infantry

Though their rate of fire is lackluster, Rocket Soldiers compensate with range and destructive power. Sniper weaponry is recommended for eliminating these enemies quickly.

Flamethrower
Weapon: Flamethrower
Purpose: Anti-Infantry Infantry

Flamethrower infantry are good close-range units and sport fire-retardant suits. However, they are useless at long distances, and their fuel tanks are susceptible to explosion from projectiles.

Nod Buggy
Weapon: Machine Gun
Purpose: Anti-Infantry Vehicle

Fast and very maneuverable, the Buggy is a Nod recon unit. Outfitted with a machine gun mount, it is the bane of infantry, but must keep moving to avoid direct fire.

Light Tank
Weapon: 100mm Cannon[?]
Purpose: Anti-Vehicle/Building Vehicle

A smaller and more maneuverable assault tank, the Light Tank is also cheaper to build. Unfortunately, this sacrifice results in a lack of firepower. Keep moving and use rockets to eliminate it.

Tiberium Harvester
Weapon: N/A
Purpose: Income Generation

Though weaponless, Harvesters are heavily armored and capable of driving over infantry. Their primary role is to harvest Tiberium for Refinery processing.

Transport Helicopter
Weapon: N/A
Purpose: Air Transport

The best tool for extracting and delivering battlefield teams is the Transport Helicopter. Fast and maneuverable, it is the primary choice for air travel. Eliminate it with rockets.

Prisoner
Weapon: None
Purpose: Bargaining Chip

Nod has taken several prisoners of war. These men are GDI-trained soldiers in unfortunate situations.

Civilian
Weapon: None
Purpose: Livestock/Fodder

Unenlisted civilians are often found in mission-critical areas. Protecting their lives is part of the job.

Farmer
Weapon: None
Purpose: Livestock/Fodder

Civilian farmers tend the fields near their homes. Be careful, they tend to wander into the line of fire.

Cargo Truck
Weapon: None
Purpose: Unarmed Ground Transport

This is a standard cargo truck.

Visceroid
Weapon: Nightmare Fuel
Purpose: Mutated Lifeform

Visceroids are the result of irregular Tiberium mutation. They have immunity to Tiberium. It is best to stay at a distance, and eliminate it with long-range weaponry.

Apache Attack Helicopter
Weapon: Autocannon and Rockets
Purpose: Airborne Assault Craft

Though Apaches don't sport the same warheads as Orcas do, they are just as fast and maneuverable in most cases. Fast weaponry is required to accurately target these enemies.

Clergy
Weapon: God
Purpose: Conditioning, torture, Sunday service.

People of religious faith tend to conflict with the ideals of Nod. This makes them viable targets during wartime operations.

Technician
Weapon: None
Purpose: Operating Nod technology

Civilians with technical skills are often hired, or conscripted, by Nod and GDI to maintain various buildings and operations. They have very little combat skill, if any at all.

Engineer
Weapon: Repair Gun
Purpose: Servicing Nod buildings and vehicles.

Though excellent at battlefield maintenance, Engineers are not well-suited to combat. Take out Engineers first if building destruction is your goal.

Mammoth Tank
Weapon: Twin 120mm Cannons and A2A/A2G missiles.
Purpose: Battlefield Supremacy Vehicle

The heaviest vehicle on the battlefield next to the Harvester, the Mammoth sports two heavy-caliber barrels. The lack of maneuverability is compensated by heavy armor.

Chemical Trooper
Weapon: Chemical Sprayer
Purpose: Anti-Infantry Trooper

Like Flamethrower infantry, Chem Warriors are close-range units with hazmat suits protecting them from Tiberium exposure. Take them out from a distance to avoid contamination.

Chef
Weapon: Flamethrower
Purpose: Spicing things up

Civilian Chefs are often hired out of the common workforce to serve in NOD facilities. For some reason, their initial loyalty is a bit stronger than the common civilian. Maybe its the curry.

Initiate
Weapon: Tiberium-powered Fists
Purpose: Close Quarters Combat Specialist

These early mutations are unstable and have less processing power than their [REDACTED]. Tiberium immunity, a powerful build and high speed make them very good at close-quarter assaults, so eliminate them at range.

First Mate
Weapon: Flamethrower
Purpose: Second-in-Command of NOD Freighter [UNKNOWN DESIGNATION]

Having little interest in combat, First Mate Gilligan has been working his career toward naval operations in an attempt to avoid ground conflict situations.

Captain
Weapon: Pistol
Purpose: Commander of the [UNKNOWN DESIGNATION], a NOD Freighter.

Captain Stubing has been a strong supporter of the Brotherhood since being rescued from his crash on a desolate island, a stressful situation that was originally intended to be a simple three-hour tour.

Babushka
Weapon: None
Purpose: Resistance Leader

Members of the resistance call her Babushka, Lola Merkova has been a town figurehead for many years.

Mendoza
Weapon: Flamethrower
Purpose: Assassin

Carlos Mendoza joined NOD when his methods became too bloody for even the most extreme extremists. He is loyal to Raveshaw and the Brotherhood, provided money doesn't run out.

Flame Tank
Weapon: Twin Flamethrowers
Purpose: Anti-Personnel Vehicle

Though inefficient as a long-range assault unit, the Flame Tank is devastating in close quarters and narrow alleyways. Destroy it with rockets at range.

Black Hand [Heavy Weapons]
Weapon: Various
Purpose: Heavy Weapons Specialist

Black Hand Heavy Weapons Soldiers are Special Forces units. Their long range skills are deadly, so keep moving when dealing with these adversaries. High powered or automatic weaponry is recommended.

Stealth Tank
Weapon: AG/AA Missiles
Purpose: Anti-Vehicle/Anti-Aircraft Vehicle

Lightly armored and fairly maneuverable, the Stealth Tank is invisible when not firing except for the tread marks and engine noise. Look for these signatures.

Surface-to-Surface Missile Launcher [SSM]
Weapon: Long-Range Missiles
Purpose: Long-Range Artillery

The counterpart to the Mobile Artillery, the SSM Launcher is effective for removing vehicles but has a harder time dealing with infantry. Consider taking it out at close range.

Black Hand Stealth Soldier
Weapon: Laser Rifle
Purpose: Elite Soldier

The Stealth capability of the Black Hand Stealth Soldiers enables them to appear when you least expect it, so keep your back to the wall and use your environment to illuminate their positions.

Acolyte
Weapon: Tiberium Auto Rifle
Purpose: Tiberium-Modified Soldier

Being more advance than their initiate brethren, Acolytes have better combat skills and improved cognitive processing. Avoid using Tiberium weaponry on these targets.

Templar
Weapon: Tiberium Auto Rifle
Purpose: Tiberium-Modified Super Soldier

Immune to Tiberium and capable of advanced target recognition and tactical thought processes, Templars are superior versions of project Re-Genesis experimentation.

Obelisk
Purpose: Base Defense

This building provides ground defense against enemy invaders. Destroy it to abate Nod base defenses.

SAM Site
Purpose: Base Defense

SAM Sites cannot hit ground targets, so use this advantage to remove them quickly. Removing SAM Sites improves air superiority for GDI. Use your C4 explosives to destroy it.

Turret
Purpose: Base Defense

The standard emplacement for base defense, Nod Turrets are formidable opponents for vehicles but can be easily eliminated by quick infantry with explosives.

Tiberium Refinery
Purpose: Income Generation via Processing Tiberium

This building processes Tiberium to provide base funding. If it is destroyed, funding is dramatically reduced. Also, watch for Tiberium Harvesters between this building and the Tiberium field.

Construction Yard
Purpose: Base Construction

This building allows all other buildings in the base area to be repaired. Without it, repairs are not possible as resources are unavailable.

Hand of Nod
Purpose: Training Infantry

This building provides reinforcements and more advanced infantry units. Destroy it to hamper Nod reinforcements and limit advanced unit production.

Communication Center
Purpose: Jams enemy radar

This building provides integral satellite communication for Nod forces. Destroy it to hamper Nod communications and prevent radar jamming.

Power Plant
Purpose: Provides power to the base.

This building provides power to all other base buildings. Destroy it to hamper productivity.

Ceiling Camera
Weapon: None
Purpose: Security Camera

Ceiling Cameras are frequently hooked into internal security systems. Avoid prolonged exposure to prevent setting off alarms.

Ceiling Gun
Weapon: Automated Machine Gun
Purpose: Stationary Turret

A difficult to spot and deadly target, the Ceiling Gun is a mounted menace. The target acquisition time for these weapons is slow, so try to eliminate them before they get adjusted.

Gun Emplacement
Purpose: Base Defense

The Gun Emplacement is a standard tool for manning a defensive position. Easily inserted via airdrop or transport, this weapon can be a daunting target if you are on foot.

Rocket Emplacement
Purpose: Base Defense

Specifically designed to eliminate heavy targets, the Rocket Emplacement is an excellent defensive weapon for bases and other facilities. If at all possible, approach them from the rear.

Airstrip
Purpose: Production Facility

This building allows Nod Cargo Transport Places to air-drop vehicles into the base. Destroy it to cripple Nod vehicle production.

Helicopter Pad
Purpose: Production Facility

This building allows Apaches to refuel. Destroy it to hamper Nod air strikes and Apache encounters.

I'd argue Battlefield had absolutely better gunplay and vehicle controls, personally, though I'm sad that few games have experimented with the exact mixture of gameplay elements that Renegade's MP play had, since.

Let us know if we're allowed to talk about the MP in detail, Jobbo, or if you're saving that for a specific video.

I think I would save it for about halfway through the campaign. At least until we've seen some of the units, buildings, and guns, in a better context.

Game audio is a bit too quiet, especially the prerendered videos.

I hope you aren't going to try this on the higher difficulties, because they add nothing but misery. But I dunno, you look like you know what you are doing.

Renegade's very finnicky on its audio, and I had to take it down a bit else it would just be overbearing. It seems that the cinematic audio isn't always the pre-rendered scenes either? Regardless, I'll do what I can to correct it for the actual missions.

As for higher difficulties... well, you'll just have to wait and see.

Renegade 00: The Scorpion Hunters

Troops from Eagle Base are enroute to the location of a suspected Nod outpost. It is suspected that the location contains valuable data that could lead to the defeat of Nod once and for all.

Location: Mexico
Objective: Find and locate the Nod Outpost

Author's note: Quick and dirty mission, the one drawback is it is far too short and feels a little slapdash. Everything is introduced far too quickly.

Aftermath:

Nod resistance crushed, critical intelligence data captured.

Points of clarification:

I am playing on Commando difficulty. I had initially played this on Commando, and had to scrap all my original footage because I wasn't using a fan patch and didn't have V-Sync on. This caused enormous stutter that could not be fixed.

I am omitting the Location and Briefing entries for missions, as they all lack a specific location and briefing as seen in prior games.

I will be adding a section for weapons as we get a few more in the next mission.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8jzcoGLM4Y
Renegade 01: Rescue and Retribution

Back from saving the team from Eagle Base, Havoc defies orders from BGen Locke after they learn that Nod has "Religious Conditioning Camps" in South-Eastern Mexico and commandeers an assault craft in order to attack the Nod base, even if its by himself.

Location: Southern Mexico
Objective: Locate Detention Center and Rescue Civilians.

Author's note: Finally, we get to see what Renegade is all about. Huge levels, plenty of gunplay, a complete lack of any autosaves...

Name: Nick Parker
Aliases: Havoc
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Commando
Voiced/Played by: Wally Wingert

Havoc is a Commando within the Global Defense Initiative's forces, ready and willing to take any fight to the Brotherhood of Nod. Commandeers (un)friendly vehicles in record time.

Name: Adriana Maus
Aliases: None
Affiliation: GDI
Occupation: Assistant to BGen Locke
Voiced/Played by: Unknown

Assistant to BGen Locke. Provides intel to the CO.

Aftermath:

Rescued numerous civilians and allied personnel. Destruction of Nod conversion site and propaganda tapes. Revealed the presence of Kane.

Mammoth Tank
Weapon: Twin 120mm Cannons and A2A/A2G missiles.
