This is what I was about to say.

You may call it "bad" but that's basically acquired tastes in a nutshell. Americans largely are used to it, so we like it and other people don't.

Yeah, Hershey chocolate is a weirdly nostalgic flavor and something that a lot of Americans grew up with. I personally think it's fine, but I've also had plenty of non-Hershey chocolate, European chocolate, etc. and that rules, too. I did start noticing the Hershey aftertaste once I learned about it, but then again, parmesan cheese smells almost exactly like human vomit so hey, sometimes whether something is tasty depends entirely on context :v:

Playing Persona 5 now, I like that the mascot character has a little kid crush on the girl character instead of being a weirdo sexual predator like in 4. Baton Pass is the best. It's hard for me to go back to Persona 4 now because it's so much fun to pass extra turns around in Persona 5

having trouble thinking of a game where the presentation adds more for me than P5

Absolutely, yeah. The presentation is such a huge part of the Persona 5 experience that it's honestly challenging for me to separate it out from the rest of the game. It adds a ton to everything you do, from combat to exploration to dialogue.

Part of me thinks a large part of the gap in whether someone likes or dislikes Persona 5 is "how much heavy lifting can the presentation do for you?" For me, it's apparently a lot.

Diablo 2 Remaster will likely be really bad, so it will just amplify the disappointment in Diablo Immortal even more.

Going by the alpha it doesn't look like it's turning out like the WC3 remaster. It apparently plays exactly like Diablo 2 but just looks newer and has console/controller support. I'm probably not going to get it (frankly, my fond memories of Diablo 2 are tied entirely to playing it with friends who don't really play games anymore and who I haven't spoken to in years) but it at least seems like it's going to be a perfectly fine remaster.

I'm sympathetic to people who are extremely spoiler-sensitive, but I do wonder if this sort of insistence that even relatively minor reveals are "spoilers" is making it impossible to write decent criticism, even if you're trying to be positive. You have to be so vague that you can't really say anything at all. It's not even just publisher review embargo restrictions, though that's certainly a big part of it (I'm sure stifling criticism is the whole point), but also the way people react if you "spoil" something in a review.

I guess it's easy for me to say because I'm not particularly sensitive to spoilers.

Hello chat thread, it's been a while. I hope you're all doing well.

I'm still trundling through Dragon Quest XI and it's been wonderful, I think I'm coming towards the end of it now.

That said I got to the reveal that [massive spoilers for your return to Arboria in the second half of the game] Veronica died to save you all and as the cutscenes were going I kept waiting for the game to be like "haha, psych, just kidding" and uh, they weren't. The cutscene with Serena finally letting herself fall apart and grieve in the evening post-funeral after inheriting Veronica's magic was heartbreaking and hit real close to home.

Yeah, that part is surprisingly effective. DQXI is a really great game.

As for whether you're coming up on the end (mild spoilers about postgame content): Dragon Quest XI's postgame has more story, quite a bit of it, to the point that a lot of people consider it functionally a full third act of the main story. SO if you're not feeling done with it after the credits roll the first time, there's more story for you to see.

This is what I figured they'd do, at least for the duration of Ichiban's tenure as the main Yakuza protagonist, however long that ends up being. I had a blast with Like a Dragon so I'm pretty happy to read this, personally.

I guess I could've also seen party-based action combat, but whatever happens with Ichiban, he's defined by having a party of close friends by his side basically at all times, so turn-based RPG combat makes the most sense.

In Persona 5 I got the big reveal about the bad guy and it seems weird. I figured it out like 50 hours ago because I noticed the clue at the start(ish) of the game and was waiting this whole time for it to come up. If you didn't notice it at the time or forgot literally a single insignificant sounding line of dialogue surely when the goodies are like aha pancakes you'd be like wtf are they talking about.

Edit: Ok now they are explaining it properly.

I like that part because the real twist isn't the identity of the traitor--that's fairly obvious--but that the Phantom Thieves also already knew and were setting him up. It's the story at its most heist movie, especially because it takes place around a big fancy casino heist.

Final Fantasy X has really long cutscenes just before boss fights, and on the PlayStation 2 version you couldn't skip the cutscenes.

You can't skip cutscenes in any version of FFX. The reason for it has to do with the way the cutscenes and voice lines were coded, and is the same reason why each voice line has to have the exact same duration in all languages or the game crashes. If you ever wondered why Yuna says "yes" so quickly in some scenes, it's because it has to match exactly with a very brief "hai" in the Japanese dialogue. Same for why some lines just speed up a lot.

It's honestly pretty remarkable what the English localization team and cast were able to do given the constraints they were working under.

it is actually a british thing, hard cider is way less popular in the states, although they keep trying to make it happen

Cider used to be extremely popular in the US, but Prohibition killed it off for a good while and apple producers switched over to making eating apples (and non-alcoholic cider).

ShallNoiseUpon posted:

i've been seeing more and more craft ciders over the past year or two so it's definitely something that seems to be on the upswing

Yeah, it definitely is making a comeback. There are cideries around Madison that are pretty good, for example.

Harrow
Jun 30, 2012

The way Prohibition changed apple production in the US is pretty interesting, I think. Pre-Prohibition, most apples were grown for hard cider or for apple-based liquors like applejack. Prohibition forced apple growers to switch over to growing apples meant for eating instead of fermenting. That snowballed when beer, wine, and other liquors became more popular during and after Prohibition, and it's only fairly recently that hard ciders have started to make a real comeback in the US. Also what we call "applejack" now is pretty different from what it used to be, largely due to it no longer being freeze-distilled (probably a good thing, because freeze distillation can go very wrong very quickly).

If there are any local cideries near you, try them out, there are some popping up in a bunch of places (if you're in the US). As far as nationwide availability, Angry Orchard is pretty widely available and pretty good. If you can get Wyder's, try their Reposado, which is aged in tequila barrels and pretty delicious.

Stella Artois makes a pretty decent cider, too. My girlfriend also recommends Ace Cider's blood orange cider if you can find it. It's called SpACE I think going by google?
