I agree that Spicer shouldn't have been cast but Snyder is a Hollywood lib, so he's going to do tone-deaf things like this.

Necrothatcher posted:pfft, just cast someone that looks like him Because it depicts the pieces on the board where they actually lay. I could care less whether Spicer got paid for his cameo; the fact that his actual identity is parlayed in this film into a broader indictment of U.S. policy is what's actually important. Like if you watch this film, and agree with what he's saying, than what more is there to say? This isn't too far removed from the various Batman V Superman news media cameos ostensibly just playing to their regular shtick.

Yeah Andrew Sullivan is a literal eugenics guy and he was in Batman v Superman. Snyder casts real right-wing pundits for whatever reason - probably "authenticity".

This ruled. It is the best Aliens re-make of all time too. Some might find the depth of field stuff Snyder is doing now annoying (it's also in the Joker scene in the SnyderCut), but I like it. It's not exactly a shock, but I loved that basically everybody got hosed. Going to Vegas to make a big score is a bad idea even without the zombies. Of course the only person who made it out alive was the one who went in for non-selfish reasons. But it was a bit of a kick in the guts that Van got infected. Real Night of the Living Dead stuff there. It is a very goofy movie, what with the hilarious presidential quotes, the robit zombies, aliens, time loop (those corpses did have their clothes/jewellery and Burke, uh I mean Martin, did say he had no idea about previous teams. Maybe he was lying, but it doesn't come up again so maybe he wasn't and they are the only team, doomed to repeat their failures over and over...) zombie king. zombie horse, zombaby but it was also very sincere and everybody plays it straight. There's no winking at the camera. I love it. It meant that the end of the film actually hit me a bit hard, even though it is a very goofy movie. Snyder takes the most ridiculous things seriously and his movies are better for it.

Lol at calling the action "pedestrian". Not everything needs to be a big drat twist, a well executed story is preferable to having a twist for the twists sake, and I think this movie delivered on that.

No. Also here’s my biggest issue and you can’t get me to like it but I really hated the lack of closure with the mom. It bothered me and made the ending sour for me. Loved the rest of the film though.

I think not providing explicit closure to Geeta was a definitely a choice that I understand mechanically but ultimately I think was not the best choice. They extend the movies plot specifically to rescue her and while I get they wanted the focus of that to be more on regards to Scott and Kates relationship it would have served the point better to at least have a brief moment with whatever was left of Geetas body. Even just a moment where Kate sees her and laments before she sees Scott.

didn't hate it. but wasn't a huge fan. there's a lot of movie here for people to pick and choose from. but: i found the action too broken up by the complicated sub-plotting, by the pseudo-anthropology of the zombie society (cool but too much of it), and by the often literal fixation on the alpha zombie's invincible bullet mask. the suspense of classical horror is almost entirely dispensed with. there's no terrible and uncertain danger lurking in the shadows. the casino is pretty quickly lit up! and the movie lets us know exactly when the zombies are coming! the father/daughter sub-plot is kind of a drag. it's an important keystone for the movie's overall thematic structure. but it stretches credulity in a number of ways. and it turns out that bautista has pretty limited emotional range. i can only criticize this so much however because i think snyder was compelled to do this as a way of engaging with the horrible tragedy of his own daughter. which is also a drag but in a different way. anyway: zombie vegas is still a fruitful setting as broad allegorical backdrop for the apocalypse. it could definitely be mined some more and i don't hate the idea of a franchise. but my ideal zombie genre movie is more dramatically centered around intrinsic human shortcomings; around the simultaneous uncertainty of the zombies outside and the humans inside. maybe fall of vegas will have tighter plotting. I loved how everyone on the team was competent. Even the "losers" ended up heroic and were able to hold their own until they were overwhelmed and couldn't. Very much reminds me of early Carpenter and I caught a lot of references to his work, and the obvious homages to Cameron, etc. If you're a fan of Assault of Precinct 13 you'll like this.

It's legit intriguing. This is exactly what you should liter a sci-fi movie with, just tons of weird things that pop out to get you interested in the world. it's like having the weird aliens in the cantina you just get a glimpse of. I think there's something super neat about the questions it raises to keep the viewer engaged after the film's end. did the army do cyborg experiments, or is there a forced alien evolution virus that makes some zombies to get bio-metal skeletons? at the end of the day, its better you don't get an unsatisfying explanation in the movie when it doesn't need it.

Thanks! Just rewatched those scenes and that was fun! It adds to the sense that there's a lot more going on. I read that there's a flying UFO too? One nonspoiler thing I did catch was the laser they were using (I guess?) to focus the action shots. People thought it was a dead pixel but it moves with the action, and you can see it jiggle.

There’s the beefcake Schwarzenegger lead guy - except this one spends the film looking confused by the dumb plot and like he’d rather be outside his trailer BBQing some ribs, the badass Latina from Aliens (pointlessly wasted) the Euro-geek comic relief trope (Look! He’s a nerd! He makes jokes! He’s a scaredy-cat!! He doesn’t know about guns like cool Americans do!!), the square jawed buzzcut company / military bad guy from Rambo and Lethal Weapon except dumb as hell (Martin Kove still currently doing a better job of this on Cobra Kai forty years down the line), the ice cool blonde, the grizzled veteran pilot, the wise cracking armed to the teeth badass from Predator (except we never see him use his weapon and he spends the movie pew pewing with a handgun), and of course the cunning Oriental bad guy mastermind just to top things off ( except he just kinda doesn’t bother showing up again once his absurdly pointless plan is underway) smellmycheese fucked around with this message at 08:25 on May 22, 2021 |

Goon stream was amazing. I loved everything about this movie; the look, the characters, the action design, the crazy rear end genre bending concepts lol. Snyder is a madman. Loved the cast, especially Dieter's screaming, but Bautista especially surprised me. Like drat, I mentioned this during the stream, but it's hard to imagine any other muscular leading man playing Scott like he did. Try and put The Rock in that role, lmao. This was by far and away the best action feature Netflix has produced imo.Shageletic posted:why is this movie so long. why is it so boring. why does it feel like everyone is stuck in the BLURRY ZONE
