I think the only one left is Game Informer which basically only exists because it's tied to gamestop subscribers. Otherwise there'd be none really.

I miss em a lot too. I used to walk to the corner convince store as a little kid and every month would pick one out, usually between EGM, Gamepro, and Game Players. I usually went with whoever had the most Nintendo stuff on the cover. Kinda sucks that whole industry is gone, that was such a great time as a kid

I'm playing with the idea of doing a subscription to the Video Game Museum's old magazine blind box.

Gamefan was one of my favorites as a kid, looking back on it now the concept of a comic featuring the cartoon personas of all the game reviewers who worked there was pretty surreal.

i wonder if this will start to come back as developers start to take more advantage of the new console hardware and switch ports become less possible

idk how many games have done it recently but unlocking extra behind-the-scenes content like concept art, videos, dev commentary, etc. was always, pretty cool when i was a kid

If you're not striving to improve, you'll end up going backwards.

MGS you actually got stuck unless you had the box which had a codec code on the back in a screenshot. Iirc it wasn't in the game outside of the screenshot

That was like, the one cool thing about the lovely PS2 era MK games.

I remember renting MGS and thinking that the "back of the disc" meant the disc that the ArmsTech president just handed me that had Metal Gear's test data on it and I spent the good part of 30 minutes trying to figure out how to look at the back of the disc case in my inventory. Thankfully, Gamefaqs exists.

I did the exact same thing lol except I bought a used copy from Blockbuster and for some reason it didn’t have the rear cover art at all.

I mostly liked game players because of that Bill Donahue guy who I thought was really funny

also because they were one of the only ones who did a 1-100 score for games. I loved the high number thing over like 1-4 that gamepro used. I remember thinking nothing was ever going to beat Super Metroid's 97%. it was really fun opening each issue to see if anything finally did (the game that finally beat it was Virtua Fighter 2 with a perfect 100% lol)
