t.a.t.u. were a bit silly with the whole faux-lesbian thing, but some of their videos are vaguely story-driven and hold up well, even if they do try to edge a bit too hard.

The Prodigy also went all in on early CGI. After being dismissed as a kiddie rave band by the music press at the time, they released "One Love" as a white label to critical acclaim and the video is peak early 90s CGI. It looks like a demoscene Commodore Amiga release.

In 1981, John Belushi asked Fear to do a song for a movie he was in. But the production didn't want to use it.

Belushi felt bad, so he helped arrange for Fear to perform on Saturday Night Live.

Fear is a hardcore punk band from California. At the time, Americans didn't know much anything about the punk scene, so the Saturday Night Live producers felt it was appropriate to get some punks into the audience. What was supposed to be 10-20 people turned into more like about 80 people.

When Fear started playing, the punks started to slam dance.

Americans (including the Saturday Night Live team) had no idea what slam dancing was. They thought that the audience had started to riot and people were about to get killed or something. They cut the live broadcast, banned Fear from returning, and never re-ran the episode.

https://youtu.be/Ww9VlmXKYgs

i googled the director's name, Marc Klasfield.

months ago i realized that all the early Cash Money videos ("Big Ballin", "Solja Rag","Cash Money Is An Army", "Ha", "Follow Me Now") were all B-Roll heavy.
over 50% of the videos aren't even "music video" style footage or even including the artist.

i always wondered if there were music videos before "Ha" that went this route, or if Klasfield was the first to do it, and do it at least five times in three years.

here's a silly video i used to always see on MTV2 back in 1998: Plastilina Mosh - Mr. P Mosh https://youtu.be/goO1dT6gITA

I saw what I now realize is this music video one time as a small child, and had night terrors for years afterwards. I tried to explain to my parents what had upset me so badly, but all I could say was there were monster people on the tv, and they weren’t pretend, they were real, they were really moving and had mass, like the characters on Sesame Street. I’m not reacting well to the revelation that this music video is real at all.

There was a brief period of time relayed by the book "Hit Men" by Fredric Dannen that the A&R of record companies stopped paying off radio stations to play to the singles and this is what hit the top 20 until they started doing it again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s05jcrJw0as

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Wanna_Be_a_Cowboy#Chart_performance

quote:

Video jockey Martha Quinn of MTV told Richards that the channel "hated" the video as it "wasn't rock and roll",[18] but since it had become a top-40 hit by that point, they had to air the video. It subsequently received more than 200,000 requests.
