My opinion is that multi-vassal Shogunate Japan looks sweet as hell

e: I will admit that it was not an ideal setup with Victoria 2's mechanics, as Kyoto (and presumably also the vassals I didn't play), was permanently starving as they only produced Tea and was entirely reliant on the world market for food, except their individual ranking (and by extension their market priority) was so low that they could never afford enough food to prosper.

Yes, but how old the game is isn't terribly important; it was still something that was heavily mocked at the time that the numbers were made up. So there's a limit to Monte Carlo tricks and so on because at anypoint the player can be expected to pause and dig through things to make sure there's nothing amiss, because ultimately you can't allow for any disconnects to happen between what the economy says and what it is.

I'm not disagreeing with any of your points, I was just a bit confused about it being called recent, to the point where I had to go check if I'd missed a new release.

I'll admit to having optimization tendencies, but those are born out of this weird fear that if I don't play as optimally as possible, I'll fall behind and the whole playthrough will be for nothing, just wasted time. It's as if every game that offers you chances to customize your playstyle and try out different things are just elaborately designed trap-mazes for me to make it through.

This might just be trauma from playing unmodded Oblivion at a formative stage in my life, I dunno

Anyway, I wonder how many other optimizers are similarly motivated by anxiety rather than the desire to master a system, or to just get their regular power fantasy fill.

Oh right, everyone keep in mind that Paradox devs, like most working Swedes, will have pretty much all of July off, so we might not get much in the ways of teasers or dev diaries for a while.

How do you model incompetency in a game like this? Nicholas II's dumb choices at every opportunity was part of the reason the Russian Revolution happened. How would that work in a Victoria 3 context?

IIRC in Crusader Kings 2, characters had a hidden "(ir)rationality" stat that was calculated based on a their traits and it affected what choices their AI would make on a personal, administrative and diplomatic level. It might very well be possible to implement something similar in Victoria 3.

Suppression is supposed to model those things in Victoria 2. Also the rebellions are supposed to be only an annoyance for a stable nation, but cause problems once other things get out of hand.

A "stable nation" that regularly experiences minor uprisings is not a stable nation.

In a stable nation, discontent is fuelled into non-militant political movements who try to push through their demands via electoralism if that's an option, or by putting pressure on the relevant actors/structures via swaying public opinion, arranging protests, strikes etc. Now these movements may become militant, but they're highly unlikely to actually turn into full-on armed rebellions unless things have already gotten pretty bad and the authorities are no longer seen as legitimate, not to mention entirely unfit to wield their monopoly on violence. That is to say, when the nation is no longer stable.

Luckily, according to what the devs have stated, this is exactly what they're aiming to model.

I'd be really surprised if strikes weren't kind of modelled somehow, even if it's just a production mallus for unhappy pops.

It fits the setting a lot better than constant armed revolts.

The production method mechanics make implementing strikes fairly intuitive. If the miners go on strike, the mines they work at become inactive, or at the very least no longer receives labor from trade union-aligned miners.

I'm thankful for this weird mental state I'm in where I'm perfectly content just reading dev diaries and going "ho hum what a clever implementation!" and then somehow just moving on with my day without obsessively daydreaming about the playthroughs I wanna do. It's very odd.
