Remember TUF's Matt Hughes bible study group? Where the point of the selected parable was to remind his team how lovely a person he was?

quote:

Hughes gathers the troops and starts handing out bibles like they were high school yearbooks. He then instructs the fighters to read the book of Esther and find a character that most resembles him.

Now I knew Hughes had an ego but to make a group of people that he is supposed to be leading dig through the bible to find a worthy comparison is just downright insane.

He starts badgering the guys to get the answer he's looking for and finally someone tells him he is the Queen. Hughes nods and says he likes to help people just as she did.

lovely stuff. And remember how the week after that the queen took up 50% of the entire group's single hour of video games reward times? I am still to this day annoyed on behalf of the likes of a games-deprived Tommy Speer and Dan Barrera

But maybe much less so for Dan Barrera though for that time when he took all his dirty clothes and threw them unsolicited into someone's in-progress washing machine load, having no underlying concept of a laundry cycle in his mind. I bet he put like his shoes and a Xyience soaked rag in there too. Monster.

So lets strike his name, peruse the season wiki and instead sub in the entirely forgotten Paul Georgieff who is a guy I doubt anyone could organically remember.

Sometimes in the grocery store I am reminded of Kim "Sugar Free" Couture who stepped into Randy's spotlight and got a ton of poo poo for just existing and who then went on to her own professional fights, as one would, and who fought her first fight through multiple rounds with an entirely hosed up lower jaw where a chunk of teeth got shifted upwards like a seismic plate proving that Kim was far tougher than Randy could ever lay claim to.
The only things I remember about Kim Couture is this, and that she once got choked out by a leg scissors hold that the referee, apparently not believing in leg scissors, let go on for an uncomfortably long time, only stopping the fight like ten seconds after she went limp.

With gobby Paddy filling up my tiktok today I am only reminded and remembering the last guy who had a middling and forgettable run in the UFC with bad management and a colonial revival hairdo.

What is it with guys that vaguely resemble Cher's fictional son and the desire to sport 1700's revival hair style?

But let us all shed a tear for the Team Takedown concept, whose domain was recently taken over by Chinese pornographers and for Jared himself who recently lost his mind to Web3 cryptoscum.

Remember when Josh Koscheck thought it was the funniest thing that a guy was a nurse and wouldn't let it drop? And weirdly it was a top-5 funny moment that season, but in a sad way, and at Koscheck's expense.

In addition that male nurse was like twice his size and actually a nice person and it helped sement that Koscheck was a doufus jerk when he went like "waaaah" with his tongue out talking about how he and his team would own the season, but then they lost hard as did Koscheck.

Also when he got the first pick who wound up being a bust (lost in the opening round of the tournament) but Koscheck really thought he was the best guy because GSP tricked him in the most blatantly obvious way.

It was better than that. He genuinely wanted that guy. He looked excellent on paper and koscheck knew him either from his wrestling days or from his early fights. GSP, who didn't have first pick, wrote the guys name down on a piece of paper marked 'my definitely real picks, signed gsp, ps. if you're reading these, these are real, josh koscheck' and left it next to josh. Josh saw the piece of paper, concluded it was real, wasted his first pick on a guy GSP didn't want, GSP picked who he wanted (Michael Johnson if memory serves) followed by a smash cut to GSP raising the roof. It was a top tier moment.

Since we're remembering people, Koscheck was pretty drat good at playing the heel. He was a confident but stupid and inarticulate bully who also had the good grace to lose fights in funny, memorable ways. Also, GSP broke his face so bad he couldn't fly for like a year at least, maybe longer.

Was that also the guy who went on to lose to Cody McKenzie by diving neck first into a guillotine after his coaches spent the whole episode saying "just stay away from the guillotine. That's all he has so just keep it standing and you'll win." Or were those two separate guys that I am getting mixed together?

it's both in a way. Cody did that to Stephens (Kos's guy) and then in the next round they brought Stephens back as an injury replacement or wild card spot or something and he got guillotined in that fight too after having learned the lesson once already vs Cody.

Been carrying this around, albatross-like, for months, maybe. I dunno why, but maybe I get some catharsis here.

Remember King Mo Lawal? I think he was one of the wave of late 2000s "whoa, this guy's really good at wrestling and is gonna train MMA [with DC] way more seriously than Mark Hammer!"

Never came to be. At his best, he created fear with the reputational threat of a takedown, fighting from a slight crouch, right hand cocked at his chin in some semblance of defense and left hand waving out in front of his knee.

When he did shoot after throwing punches, it was usually just running in with his head ducked down hoping for the best. Would make Fedor proud.

He had decent power, but terrible balance, no gas, never showed any growth as a striker, and never got better at wrestling in MMA.
So maybe it was merciful that he got derailed by Emmanuel "The [Happy] Hardcore Kid" in maybe one of the more comical KOs of the era:

I can't remember if this is true of all the orgs Mo fought in that allowed shoes, but iirc, you couldn't kick if you wore wrestling shoes.
Kicking was never his thing, but I definitely have engrained in my head Mo in that stance of his, shuffling around on the ring in his shoes, trying to make his big right hand work and failing most of the time.

Anyways, I found out after reviewing his fights that he split a pair of KOs with Jiri.

When King Mo was still undefeated, I clipped a pull quote from a magazine where he said, “I’ll never give up. You’ll have to kill me first,” and I double sided taped that to the side of my printer in my studio as inspiration.

Never really was that big a fan of the dude personally, but it was a good bit of inspiration :unsmith:

Wagner Prado will forever and always be "my Guy". He was 8-0 in Brazil and took a short notice fight against Phil Davis. Davis poked Prado in the eye with 90 seconds left in the first round. It was called a no contest. Two months later he got his rematch against Phil Davis and lost in the 2nd round via submission with like 30 seconds left in the round. Per Wikipedia he had one more fight in the UFC Ildemar Alcântara and lost by kneebar in the 2nd round. So after starting 8-0 he went 0-2-1. He never fought in the UFC but has managed to go a very respectable 8-5-1

Anyone remember Luiz Cane? Pretty respectable early run in the UFC: two wins by knockout, a decision win over Steve Cantwell (who deserves his own post, but not for being good) and only a DQ loss. Then he ran into Little Nog, who knocked him out in two minutes and broke something in Cane's brain. He developed a Brock esque aversion to being hit. It climaxed at UFC 134. This was the first Brazil card in a couple of decades and whoo boy did they make sure Brazilians had plenty to cheer. Except Cane hosed that up. He was booked to fight Stanislav Nedkov, who may or may not have moonlighted as an enforcer for the Bulgarian mafia. Cane came out and looked okay to start with before Nedkov found his chin and Cane's brain broke again. He tried to run away, briefly running up the fence like an Anthony Pettis hell bent on escape as Nedkov pursued him and finished him off. It was the only fight of the night without a Brazilian winner and allowed us to discover the Brazilian silence. When a Brazilian loses to a non-Brazilian in Brazil, the crowd tends not to boo. They fall silent. Completely silent. They won't boo, that would be rude, but they're sure as poo poo not applauding, and so we were introduced to the sound of 14,000 people abruptly falling silent and folding their arms in a dissatisfied way.

Cane jump-kicking the cage in confusion as he tried to escape further brain-scrambling is one of top 10 funniest visuals in MMA I have ever seen, it is loving amazing.

Post-fight Nedkov also casually took the Bulgarian flag offered to him by his coach/trainer and blew his bloody nose into it. Literally just every man inside the cage making their nation proud that night.
