does anyone have any gifs of katsunori kikuno crescent kicking people's livers to powder? i just randomly thought about him today, i thought his style was going to revolutionise MMA but instead he decided to invite people to punch him in the face to prove the invincible warrior spirit of karate and his career fell off a cliff.

Man, Dunc was such a huge fan of his style, and also talked up the taikiken kata Kikuno did, which started with this hissing kiai that sounded like he was gonna hock up a loogie.

His terrible defense in the UFC made me forget that he had some real dynamite in his hands.

I can't even think of his name in my head with an American pronunication; it's gonna be Schiavello's kahtsooNWOHreeee kihKUUnohh.

Yeah, David "The Crow" Loiseau.

He was imo top 5-10 in his era. So pretty good but not a threat to the best.
There's always fighters who're regarded as good strikers, and he was billed that way.

This is probably his most memorable win:

Ninja had somewhat of a redemption for staying in Shogun's camp and helping him put some successful gameplans together.

Remember the Dog Brothers? The mma offshoot of LA based stick and cudgel fighters who would knock each others fingernails out with sticks and cudgels in public parks while wearing fencing Masks (sometimes) during that very late 90’s anything goes period of combat sports.

I like how honest they were with themselves about what they were doing -- it was dangerous and so injury prone that it's hard to develop and evolve open-rules weapons fighting, but we like it so we'll keep doing it. I swear there was a Fight Club style rule that if you showed up first time to one of their events, you had to spar someone.

I feel like I saw the Dog Bros Stick Fightin on one of those shows where a guy would travel to a land, learn about the local martial art and then get his rear end kicked by an expert

I know Jimmy Smith of Bellator was on one, but my brain tells me there was another, similar show

Rallarsving? It was Swedish but I saw a lot of subbed episodes somewhere when it was running.

They had this gimmick called Wrestlegram where one of the hosts would dress up as a ... lucha gimp, and get delivered to wrestle their various guests.
This is when they went up against a Swedish Olympic wrestler who's like twice his size.

I know, its all great stuff. He's got a sweet song about his kid, another one about speeding down the freeway and a bunch a songs about fuckin. All done up in the same kind of synthy fakedeep stream of consciousness style. Arguably the greatest accomplishment done by the Gracies.

I keep hoping for more rimbo music!

Hmm, can't give him the satisfaction. Not after Metamoris.

Been carrying this around, albatross-like, for months, maybe. I dunno why, but maybe I get some catharsis here.

Remember King Mo Lawal? I think he was one of the wave of late 2000s "whoa, this guy's really good at wrestling and is gonna train MMA [with DC] way more seriously than Mark Hammer!"

Never came to be. At his best, he created fear with the reputational threat of a takedown, fighting from a slight crouch, right hand cocked at his chin in some semblance of defense and left hand waving out in front of his knee.

When he did shoot after throwing punches, it was usually just running in with his head ducked down hoping for the best. Would make Fedor proud.

He had decent power, but terrible balance, no gas, never showed any growth as a striker, and never got better at wrestling in MMA.
So maybe it was merciful that he got derailed by Emmanuel "The [Happy] Hardcore Kid" in maybe one of the more comical KOs of the era:

I can't remember if this is true of all the orgs Mo fought in that allowed shoes, but iirc, you couldn't kick if you wore wrestling shoes.
Kicking was never his thing, but I definitely have engrained in my head Mo in that stance of his, shuffling around on the ring in his shoes, trying to make his big right hand work and failing most of the time.

Anyways, I found out after reviewing his fights that he split a pair of KOs with Jiri.

Interesting to see a less weird (hair and style) version of Jiri out there.
