More than anything in that segment, having Ogogo do and say nothing was a weird choice.

Like, when they brought out Wight, my assumption was that it was so Ogogo could knock his rear end out.

He should have yelled You are huge! That means you have huge guts! and then punched him in his big guts.

The cool thing about AEW is that he could have used that segment to do almost anything, and it seemed designed for him to improv and they could call it in the ring, he just didn’t. He didn’t respond to any of the giant’s comments he just orbited his designated area looking lost. QT I guess then attempted to cut a promo, it was as amusing as a warm breeze. Cody should be world champion and I wish he was less humble.

Ok.

Given that Ogogo damaged his rib, despite it not being a break, I wouldn’t be surprised if they cut back on a planned physicality spot just to play it safe.

He didn't have a mic dude. My guess would be that they specifically planned for QT to be a heat magnet for Ogogo in that segment

I've always liked making fun of Cody despite seeing him as a mostly good wrestling character, but on a 100% serious note, he's been kind of floundering after losing the TNT title. He's been a part of, like, 3 unreservedly good segments this year (Shaq match, Penta callout, Nightmare Factory turn), and he's not even churning out the "dumb-but-kinda fun wrassling bullshit" at the same rate as he used to (more inexplicable figure fours on a bus, less meandering promo work, please). Hopefully it's just a rocky feud and he can work his way into something better after DoN

Oh yeah, I didn't mean across the board. Jericho and Cody are both more hit than miss overall, though as time goes on that's starting to be closer to 50/50. I wasn't a fan of really any of Jericho's feud with Orange Cassidy. The MJF stuff has had highs and lows. Just tonight specifically they both had segments that just felt like them having their own fun without it actually being particularly entertaining. Pinnacle doing a little beatdown saved that segment. Cody and Ogogo...Christ. Just let Ogogo call him a pissboy and punch Dustin or whatever.

ChrisBTY

this glorious monument

It's a feud with 3 rookies and an overachiever. He can be forgiven for beefing it a bit. The Ogogo match probably won't be great. That having been said? Lot of unforced errors (like the entire American Dream promo). He's gonna need a banger of a program soon because his overindulgence is leading him to a ramp and a shark.

I am nowhere near ready to call Jade The Tanahashi of women's wrestling 6 matches into her career. She is an extremely promising prospect who is showing very early signs of being excellent both in the ring and on the mic combined with A+ intangibles. But that's it.

Britt Baker on the other hand...is ready. She reached the Austin zone. The point where your heel act is so over you could turn face at any time without changing much. There is a SLIM chance Shida retains just so she can bask in actual fanfare after carrying the entire division for 12 miserable, mostly fanless months. But you just can't slam the brakes on Britt here. You just can't. Have Shida win the title back in 2022 or something.

The Pinnacle vs The Inner Circle. Wrestling can be annoying sometimes. Sometimes it just boils down to both sides of the feud have said and done everything there is to do and say and things start feeling repetitive. MJF in the IC stayed (fairly) fresh for months but this stable v stable feud got dull fast. Because there's just nothing left aside from just beating the crap out of each other.

Christian Cage is going to win the Casino Battle Royal and I'm going to be kind of annoyed because Christian has always had a ceiling to me, and that ceiling is several floors below 'program with Kenny Omega for the world title'.

Miro...holy poo poo I was not prepared for how popular Miro is.

That's such a corny, WWE thing that I hope they don't do it, but I wouldn't cry about Wight being the giant for Christian to slay en route to winning and I wouldn't even terribly mind him winning and getting a shot at Omega. It'd be a fun match and do a decent number.

If I was booking it I'd have someone else "slay" Paul Wight. Doesn't necessarily have to be the winner, just someone that gets a lot of credibility from it, like Hobbs.

I want to hear it too, but probably not during the Casino Battle Royal. I much prefer that win going to someone with an ongoing story. Christian would be the best pick for me. I'm really enjoying how his run is playing out. I mean I guess you could have Danielson enter the BR and then....not win it but I don't think that would be smart.

Also, regarding Shida, since it seems all but inevitable that she's losing at DoN, she has definitely been underutilised to a degree that it was actively pissing me off at times. She'd just not be on TV for weeks and weeks and they refused to do any sort of build to almost all of her programs. The flipside to that is that I never got tired of her and at no point over the last 365 days was there anyone else I'd have rather seen the belt on (except when I thought maybe she could drop it to Mizunami and I'd have been ok with it). She's probably the second best wrestler the division has next to Deeb and her matches almost always delivered. When she drops the title I'm going to feel sad that she isn't the champion anymore but I'm also going to feel a great deal of frustration that a year-long title reign, for reasons that seemed out of her control, didn't feel adequate enough

The consensus seems to be that Dasha was laughing kind of awkwardly/nervously because she didn't expect that (since he was just asked to do the translating) and Rosa is the one who was getting pissed off and defending Shida.

Dynathoughts

Wow, this is a CROWD. There's so many people packed around this ring, I love it. We're back to the old Daily's Place layout

1) Darby Allin vs Cezar Bononi. Bononi has upped his game a little, he doesn't seem lost like he had in some previous matches, and his punches look more effective. I need five or six hours of Excalibur explaining Hot Boi Summer to JR. This was a perfectly fine short opener.

Darby telling Page and Sky he wants them tonight. Page and Sky smugly refuse, it's pretty good. On the big stage? Sky, it's the same stage. And the honks attack! Yay honks! Dark order out, crowd go wild, all by the numbers but they're good numbers.

Crowd are appreciative of Tall Paul coming out for the weigh in. Feel sorry for the poor sods sat behind the flags. Who's the douche with the Factory wearing Ogogo's suit? Tall Paul really enjoyed the "American Dream" intro. Oh hey, Brooke Havok is back! This is one time I'll forgive Cody's pageantry. if you're going to do this, it should look like this. Love this nailbiting footage of two men trying to work out how a scale works. Union Jack boxers for heat, nice. Cody weighs 218, Ogogo weights 219. Which, once again, means nothing. QT leaning into it as a petty victory is fun though.

Powerhouse Hobbs beats up Christian backstage. Christian has to get weapons involved to beat him, because he's a scrub.

2) Hangman Page vs Joey Janela. Sonny and Joey back on the same page? Joey working heel a bit here. The crowd love Hangman Page so much. Taz goes much more Dark Taz during commercials, I like it. Joey's lack of rear end is making his gear fit funny. Janela is bringing it tonight. Hangmin is bleeding from the mouth and it makes him look vicious. Jeez, Hangman got opened the gently caress up here.

Cage comes out as Taz yells at Page. Page has seen this movie. Oh, I like the "I expected more from you" angle. Nice. Jeez, Page's crimson mask looks amazing and is really disturbing.

God drat it, the Mox / Kingston commercial cut out as Mox was calling the Bucks "Rod and Todd Flanders"

And we're back. Weird technical hitch, boys. Good promo but too long.

Toney out to get Orange Cassidy's answer, but a proper bastard comes out instead. Throws Tony out of the ring by just saying "OUT!" PAC reinforces his fun tweener status. The crowd aren't fond of this but I love it. Omega tries a cheap shot run in and PAC just knicks him on his as because PAC is awesome. Numbers game takes it over, Death Triangle bring things back to even. This is a fun beating, and then Orange and HIS friends come out and the building explodes. Cassidy having spelled "Kenny" wrong and having to cross it out is just loving perfect.

Dude in the front row in a Jun Kasai shirt. Respect.

The theatre of this segment is really good.

Jade Cargill being interviewed while wearing an absolutely ludicrous outfit. Jade has selected Smart Mark as her representation. Okay.

3) Jade Cargill vs KiLynn King. Really glad that KiLynn gets a proper entrance, wish she had the rest of Big Red with her. Love her Captain Marvel gear. Time for some Big Lass Wrestling. Oh, I LOVE this Test Of Strength at the start. KiLynn is getting some good vicious offense in here, and Jade is responding in kind. This match could be quicker, but I'm not at all mad at it. Decent, but I wanted more from KiLynn.

4) Dante Martin vs Miro. The crowd roared for Miro, not because he's a face but because he's something you respond to. Dante showing some nice speed here, and as long as he's able to avoid Miro's blows he looks really great and the crowd respond well to him. But then entropy happens and he dies, he tragically dies.

"LANCE, SIC HIM!" was amazing.

I love Shida's dress, she looks lovely. Wait, two championship belts? This feels a bit too obviously a goodbye ceremony for her reign. New belt is bigger, which is good.

I like her promo. Simple but pure. And interrupted by THIS rear end in a top hat. This was nicely done and made Shida and Britt seem important.

Sammy in the crowd doing picture in picture cue cards. Cool beans.

5) Uno and Grayson vs Sky and Page. This is a very good tag match between two very good tag teams, but feels like a very odd fit for a position this high on the card. I've long thought that the way you get Page and Sky over is just to let them wrestle people and be assholes in the ring to them, and this works well on that level. However it's unavoidable that these are teams that, inasmuch as they are on the card for Sunday, are in a battle royal on Sunday rather than a high stakes match. If you can ignore that, though, this is really really good tag team wrestling.

Darby brings out a million Stings. AND IT'S STING IN A STING MASK! THEY DID THE THING!

Inner Circle Celebration. I tend not to enjoy segments that are just fancy ways of saying "these people come out and talk", especially for main events. This was overlong but ended well.

This was not the best episode of Dynamite. In fact I'd say it would be lucky to be in the top 50%. Reserving the biggest names for the pay per view is smart, but it had the effect of nothing seeming that important. I felt more pumped by Elevation than Dynamite this week, and that's a shame. Viewed as a two hour preshow, this was very good. Viewed as an episode of Dynamite, it was desperately uneven.
