Howard Beckett's turning out to be pretty cool: I kinda wish I could join Unite, just to vote for him but I'm already in the CWU. Can you be in 2 unions at once?

there are smaller unions inside Unite itself that get treated as branches for their internal purposes, so there aren't exclusivity clauses. I know people on exec committees that are openly members of three unions (semi-independent branch and the IWW). Don't know about CWU, though.

also for gensec elections you can vote as a community member of Unite, which is cheaper.

Yeah, I saw it and wasn't sure what to make of it. Either I'm also in and around branches that massively breach all these rules with the explicit approval of our regional and industrial officers or it's incredibly misleading, as branch nominations are a branch exec thing, not a branch member thing. Which means 20 letters would be about right, if not more than expected.

I'll check (clearly, I'd forgotten Coyne was actually dead last by some distance, so I might just not have paid attention to the nomination meeting) but I'm not seeing the slightest reason to bring up 6000 members beyond shitstirring. Coyne would also need 25 nominations thrown for it to make any difference, and again, I've not heard a single person give a poo poo about him whatsoever.

I'll bookmark this to laugh at my hubris later.

nope I'm wrong, it's quorum (5 members) and voted by those present. So 20 letters could be defended if the branch widely advertised the nomination meeting online, it's absolutely dodgy as poo poo if they didn't

yeah it's the competency that's the issue. If they were that evil to be planning it, we'd know from leaks. And we do, we know that the explicit plan has always been to kill everyone and ignore the consequences. If they were competent they'd know that what they're doing shrinks the workforce at the same time as pissing it off and giving nearly everyone a sick relative, with no economic benefit. Historically, these are the peak conditions for socialism and social democracy. Their protection will run out as people realise that long-term health consequences can't just be ignored.

A 90% effective vaccine breaks the reproductive cycle of a virus in the cells of 90% of people.

This is why chicken pox parties work. Once kids have had it, they can't just get a little chicken pox later. They are immune in that the chickenpox virus can't reproduce in their cells any more.

Bacteria works on a sliding scale because it can replicate quite happily. The more white blood cells tuned to it that a person has, the faster it dies.

Please don't encourage pox parties, that's how you get shingles and postherpetic neuralgia. They don't work, they just ensure everyone has a dormant infection that will wake up whenever you become immunocompromised.

yknow pox parties aside I'm still not certain this is right. This sounds like you're describing the efficacy of a vaccine that offers sterilising immunity, and no covid vaccine does this. If efficacy rates were a reflection on the ability to halt viral reproduction, we wouldn't have seen death and hospitalisation rates decouple - if the virus can't reproduce then the infection is over after a few hours with flu-like symptoms. Instead we're seeing vulnerable people get sick and recover.
