My boiler’s on its last legs and really needs to be replaced. Because of you know, the whole thing, I was thinking of changing to an electric boiler from a gas one. Anyone know the logistics of that, or if it’s a terrible idea or anything?

Electric boilers cost 4x more to run than even an old 70% efficient gas boiler, and are usually slower to heat water for peak use. Even a small compact gas boiler will think nothing of putting out 24kW, which would be enough to blow the main house fuse in a simple electric boiler.

I'm really hoping that because
they'll start doing some grants for heatpumps or something, that's the only way to go electric.

Yeah, this was my concern. My initial research always came up with it being all upsides, but also you’ve got electric radiators or heat pumps or whatever. Suffice to say, I don’t want to rip out my entire central heating system.

Can I just ask in an extremely Seinfeld voice (and presumably therefore have someone explain as George Costanza) what's the deal with the Unite candidates?

As far as I can tell Howard Beckett was saying the right things and pissing off the right people, apart from being slightly insane and banging on about setting up a TV channel. But Owen Jones is saying if we don't all get behind Steve Turner, who I've never heard of, the unions are finished. Also there might be a third one who's name begins with G but might be the Starmerite stooge.

Basically Beckett went big in the media, which is a bit weird since this is essentially an internal Unite matter. But this has led a lot of people on Twitter to believe that he is the only left candidate and that anyone else is a Starmer stooge. A lot of this is because the Skwawkbox guy is on the Beckett campaign. Turner won the most nominations and has the backing of Unite’s left faction, and is a not unreasonable choice for a left candidate. If the left cannot get behind a single candidate though, whichever one of the three it is, Coyne will almost certainly win and the left will lose Unite which would be an absolute disaster.

It is incredible that after Hartleypool the consensus among pretty much everyone was that Labour lost because it didn’t have any policies, and we’re now however long it’s been, with another by-election in a few weeks, and they still don’t have any policies.

There is absolutely no loving way that 6,500 of Labour's 7,000 voters decided to go hard on tactical voting in the course of the last 18 months.

I’d not even heard about this by-election until a few days ago, I suspect that Labour (probably rightly) considered it unwinnable and focused on Batley and Spen instead. Presumably the Lib Dems went all-in, so I imagine it was clear to everyone in the town that only the Lib Dems could beat the Tories. It hardly requires manipulation of arcane voting systems.

Too bad. That Turner character has said some extremely questionable poo poo fairly recently. No idea why people like Owen Jones are blind drunk on him.

No one thinks Steve Turner is the second coming of Christ, but he won the most nominations, and he also won the backing of Unite’s internal Left faction. He has plenty of decent left-wing credentials, and was the pretty obvious option for a left unity candidate once Coyne got on the ballot. Thank loving god Beckett has stood down.

The real issue is that the Unite GS election is FPTP because of course it is. FPTP regularly destroys democratic engagement. If it has a decent voting system then you could have all 3 left candidates and actually have internal democracy instead of people having to step down. Frankly, anybody that gets elected (especially in elections like this where it's not 600+ seats at once) and doesn't immediately change the system away from FPTP is not for internal democracy. These sorts of internal 'nobody was running against them' or people dropping out is how the people at the top fix elections.

Yeah, obviously they shouldn’t have FPTP, and I’m not sure why this wasn’t changed in the past. But it’s not changing for this election.
