On a related note, there's a similar controvery in Bristol right now. Up on the high ground in Clifton, close to the Avon Gorge, is a gorgeous 18th century shopping street full of pubs, coffee shops and specialist stores. It's one of the gems of Bristol. However, its gorgeousness is somewhat marred by 90% of the street being given over to traffic, with 2 lanes and parking on both sides of the street restricting pedestrians to narrow stretches of pavement less than 4 feet wide.

However, something is being done about this and plans are afoot to pedestrianise the street, giving the space back to people and allowing tables on the street, market stalls to be set up etc. Guess what the olds think of all this?

https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/clifton-protesters-against-pedestrianisation-block-5501515

This protest is completely pointless as the road they have blocked off in the picture is one that practically no-one uses.

However, if the proposals are correct then it would actually seem a bit weird to close the road they are intending.

The Green line is the road the protestors have closed. The red line is the proposal by the council. The Green road has no parking anyway, so you have to walk to the restaurants there. The red line is pretty much the only way into the area without having to go considerably all the way around the houses.

"Tory" isn't a cutesy euphemism, it's from an old Irish word for "thief" (first used derogatively but then became the name of the Tory party, the precursor to the Conservatives (e: & now used derogatively again)).

"Nonce" doesn't sound cutesy either imo, like it very definitely sounds offensive in a way that "paedo" just doesn't (e.g. "you loving nonce oval office" is way more emphatic than "you loving paedo", you can barely even coherently string the c-word after that one). I guess it sounds kind of faintly ridiculous, but lots of our insults do ("twat", "wanker") - imo that makes them more effective for ridiculing the person you're talking about.

Words sound different to different cultures I guess is the moral here.

Back when I turned 16 I started working in the kitchen of the only Chinese takeaway in our village. Ended up working there for 8 years.

The way we made chips was to take Maris Piper potatoes, peel and cut into chips. Then they would all be fried in the early afternoon to about 80% cooked.

When an order came in, they would get fried the final 20% which also heated then back up. The oil we used was the same oil we fried everything in, so it had flavour infused into it.

I did like Baddiel's comedy, both from the Mary Whitehouse Experience and the later Newman and Baddiel in pieces.

I found he has this self depreciation comedy thing going on in a similar vein to Rodney Dangerfield (though very different styles) which I enjoyed a lot. Though I suspect that the reason I liked the later show was due to Rob Newman and his personal life anecdotes. I like a lot of comedians that do the "here's an anecdote about something that actually happened". It's why I like Jim Bruer and Dave Gorman as comedians.

Now that he is on his own however, there's not much to like. It seems he definitely needed to be with other comedians to really succeed.

Also Punt and Dennis are a national treasure.

UKMT Solidarity Fund Monthly Update - 3rd July 2021

An update from a different committee member this month.

So firstly, a little update on us and the constitution. As mentioned by Maugrim in the last update, we are currently working towards becoming an actual real life charity. Basically, because you have all been so generous, in order for us to continue the great work we need to make it official. There are some very long documents that need to prepared and reviewed prior to sending them to the Charity commission. We should have an update on this very soon.

Our funds are slightly up on last month as there were not many applications. The fund is in a good position however we are aware of a larger amount going out shortly so all help is gratefully received. May I also say a big thank you everyone for allowing us to continue helping goons in need.

If you are someone that is in need, no how minor or petty you think your need may be, please get in contact. This fund is here to help you with whatever comes your way. If something is causing you stress, pain, worry or physical distress, please get in contact with us. Please do not go hungry or without something because you are of the belief that your pain is not important enough. Feel free to contact any of the committee if you would like to discuss an issue. All matters are treated in complete confidence.

Anyway, onto the reason that all of you are here.... HARDCORE NUDITY STATISTICS AND GRAPHS

I do believe that this government and the next will pull out every trick they can to keep house prices going up.

They have now brought in the government backed 95% LTV mortgages. They can't lower Interest rates any more. They got rid of Stamp Duty for a long time, but I don't think that will work again.

I honestly expect there to soon be government back 100% mortgages based on amount you can pay as opposed to salary multipliers, as right now even if I had enough deposit, theres no lender out there that would give me a high enough multiplier on my salary to get a mortgage.

My parents unfortunately got stung by the 90's recession and we lost our family home during that one, so there was nothing for me to inherit.

I highly suspect that I will be renting for the rest of my life and that sucks.

Edit: 141 is the number you put before the number you dial to hide your telephone number from the caller and ensure that they wont pick up.

I've been lucky with my current landlord. He is charging well under what he could, allows me to make any alterations I like with regards to decorations and fixings. Never comes round to inspect the place, repairs anything no matter how minor as quickly as he can.

As opposed to my previous landlord who didnt declare that the place I was living was a residential location (it was listed on the deeds as storage) and I suddenly ended up with a massive council tax bill for the entire time I was there. I also suspect that they were not declaring the rent as income.

Just wondering if this 'hot property market' is a manufactured media thing and doesn't really exist except in a few locations such as Cornwall.

The property market has really been insane pretty much nationwide for the past few months. People were making offers on properties without even viewing them.

So the main issues that you are going to have are location, price and how will maintained the property is.

Is it a place where there are jobs and people can commute? Is there a driveway/garage or good public transport on the road?

How does the inside look? It's it looking fresh and clean, or like there is going to be work needed for any new occupant?

Finally, and this is always the key, are they simply asking to much for the property? Any property will sell if the price is right. Estate agents love to overestimate how much a property is worth by about 5-10%. It's just that over the past 6 months, they've actually managed to do that, probably down to stamp duty holiday.

It's me again yes how did you guess, cos last time, you were really impressed. If I'm going to have that stuck in my head, everyone else can as well. It's that time again to give you all a little update on the Solidarity Fund.

Charity update - The forms we need have been edited and reviewed and getting ready for submission to the Charity Commission. It's kind of crazy to think that your generosity has been so great, that we are required to do this. You are all awesome people and we really hope to keep continuing to help those in need.

Funds have taken a bit of a dip this month as there were a couple of large payouts, but we are still in a good position should you need assistance. My particular favourite moment this month was thinking back to that Fox News image where 99.6% of "poor" households dare to have a refrigerator, you know the one. Well you have helped the one of the 0.4% ensure that their food keeps fresh. An absolute necessity in this day and age.

If you are someone that is in need, no how minor or unimportant you think your need may be, please get in contact. This fund is here to help you with whatever comes your way. If something is causing you stress, pain, worry or physical distress, please get in contact with us. Make a bid!" I didn't hashtag or @ them, so apparently they have someone whose entire job is to monitor Twitter for mentions of eBay and then send personalised messages imploring posters to spend money.

This happens if you search for an item on eBay. They like to send emails if you clicked on an "auction" to let you know when the bidding ends.

I doubt it was via Twitter.

Well ok, at first glance it seems like an unachievable goal, but is it?

Obviously caveat this with not having kids, or other financial dependents, existing debts, and stable employment making the median income of £31k p/a, and not living somewhere with stupid rental costs like London or Edinburgh.

Your take home pay would be around £25k after deductions, budget about a third of that for rent, and another third for living costs and expenses (so 1,388 p/m). That leaves just under £700 p/m to put aside for savings. Which would mean you could have that £17k nest egg in just over 2 years.

It'd be tough and you'd need to keep a tight reign on your spending but I wouldn't say it was unreasonable for a lot of people.

Just want to pick up on this with regards to the median income stated above. The most up to date statistics from the ONS don't bear these numbers to be correct. I did find a source for the £31,000 median income, but that was GQ who also appears to have done the maths wrong.

The data from the Annual Survey for Hours and Earnings (ASHE) show that the mean salary in the UK was £572.70. This report was in November 2020 so the number will have gone up a bit since then. but at that point it was £29,700. The MEDIAN however is only £479.10 per week. So considerably lower at £25,000 a year. A lot of people are not even earning the average salary, It's massively increased due to the London figures which are Average £41,000 and Median £33,250.

Rental costs Found Here are pretty stupid across the country now, with the Median rent now being £730 per month (Average £864). That's a massive chunk of salary for a large proportion of the residents of this country. It's not surprising that a lot of people don't have savings of any decent size.
