Either as an actual paid position or as a consultant to bring in and help them figure out a system that works. Everything seems incredibly hosed and no one on the mod team seems to have the skills needed to fix it and the userbase as a whole isn't going to have an answer. Bring in a professional because again, none of these are new problems and lots of other communities have solved them.

In short, asking the people complaining on how to fix it is part of how we get into these messes. None of us know how to fix it, if we did it would of been done a long time ago. The admin team needs to reach out and try to find the answers themselves, preferably from an expert.

remember ppl quoteing this and posting like "Absolutely this." and "Jeff, it is imperative that you heed this advice, else the consequences shall be dire."

somethingawful is a black swan and anyone who actually has the depth of knowledge to fix whatever problems you have in mind isn't gonna be cheap

what will likely happen is that jeffrey will hire some zoomer @ $30,000/yr who is gonna realize they're out of their depth and is either going to be completely arbitrary and capricious or too cowardly to stir up a revolt

the thing is, op, problems magically go away when you stop caring about them

some days i wake up and check my threads and it's just a wall of yellow quote boxes with "gently caress off you crazy rear end in a top hat" scribbled underneath

do i let that stop me? of course not

Who is in charge here? Are there admins and moderators like other sites?

Something Awful is run by a small staff of paid administrators("admins") and moderators ("mods"). A list of administrators and moderators and how to contact them individually can be found here.

All administrators are members of United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America Local 319 while moderators are members of Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 243.

The best way to reach a moderator is to use the contact form, which emails all of the mods. You can also send a private message or email directly to any of the staff. The site is staffed 24/7, and the contact form will reach whoever is on duty.

All the moderators are also regular site members, so you may see them around participating just like anyone else. When a moderator leaves an official moderation action, the action will appear in the bottom of the moderated post, and a star badge will appear in the byline next to their name. (These actions are archived, so you can find moderation actions by clicking on the lepers colony at the bottom of the page.)

On the situation in Gaza, and Something Awful

The situation in Gaza is awful, and as a moderation team collectively we are horrified by the violence and destruction and loss of life the Israeli government has been causing in Palestine. As a Jew, personally, I am too; for the mod team and for many people in the Something Awful community this isn't just a terrible situation but one with very direct and personal resonances. Jewish identity and history is complex; overt and oppressive violence isn't, and what the state of Israel is doing right now to the people in Palestine is wrong.

The desire to talk about and react to the situation on Something Awful is completely understandable. But it's also a topic that has, in particular during times of open conflict, been incredibly difficult to manage as an open discussion without it escalating to a point of being more harmful than helpful, and that's something we can't knowingly support playing out in the community here.

It's hard to say when and how a broad discussion of this can go well; we are going to have to exercise a lot of care in assessing whether the framing of a post and available moderator resources will make for a workable thread. In the mean time it feels necessary to me to make this announcement acknowledging both that site dilemma and the actual situation at large since Something Awful, as a place built around posts, can end up feeling conspicuously silent when there's not a thread happening organically.

I'd like to try and fill the gap left by the lack of an open thread by using the space inside this post to round up informational resources; the mod team will aim to add to this post periodically if folks will forward good links to us via the contact form.
