awesomeolion posted:saying over/under hooks a bunch of times (whatever those are). I think you can overuse those terms, but they're a legitimate facet of grappling. It's if you have your arm under their armpit or over their shoulder. It's a basis for various techniques and transitions. Not a UFC event, but I think Anderson deserves the mention here anyways. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4GGGoRCxT8 His opponent, JCC Jr, missed weight by a couple pounds. The fat and never lived up to his potential boxer will probably win over the wrung out MMA legend.

I think Bisping and Joe are close for predicting the strike a fighter will use right before they use it. It's frequently nothing that insightful, but still fun to hear them pay themselves on the back.

Anderson's reflexes looked pretty good and JCC Jr looked expectedly slow. Between that and the reach, Anderson was mostly able to stay out of trouble. I definitely think it helped his defense that he was only looking for punches. Early on, he didn't look quite comfortable in a boxing stance, and most of his punches seemed more measured than fluid. He seemed to be watching for when JCC would slow down before trying to ramp it up. He did settle in with more rounds, and started his usual hands down showboating and guard distractions. When he did go on the offensive, he landed solidly... usually on JCC's guard. But outworked him. I think a prime Silva would have really damaged a relatively open JCC with jabs -- here he wasn't committing because he was too cautious about counters. As it was, JCC's face was still marked up pretty good as he slowed down R6-8. Silva was never afraid to majorly duck and weave in MMA, which served him well here, as he really made use of moving the upper body to try to avoid JCC's offense. Certainly a lot of MMA fighters would have gotten too stuck from staying upright. He got caught with a hook end of R2, maybe the most he felt he was in danger in the fight, and did a very committed tie up and sort of played dumb for an extra several seconds when the ref tried to separate them. In another exchange, he hit JCC with a good forearm shot, which got a warning from the ref. Good tactical cheating. e: someone put it on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOVHZBphpec kimbo305 fucked around with this message at 15:35 on Jun 21, 2021 |

TheKingslayer posted:Dustin is also kind of a bad match for Conor I think. He's durable, can have great defense on his feet, can do five rounds no problem, and has solid grappling. Dustin at 155 is so fun. I'm glad he made the move up so long ago. Kragger99 posted:Watching it live I though Dustin did really well, but the second time, I noticed he was getting hit pretty hard, and a bit too often in the first round. I think his camp built up some very specific Conor defense tactics, and he executed them well, but not completely naturally. From this base, they have to decide how much to tweak given that Conor hasn't had any fights in between. Conor's camp can decide to try new things or just emphasize places where he was having success. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Conor shot a double just for the hell of it.

LobsterMobster posted:Ortega says Kemran had success by putting pressure on Battle, and basically says "why not just get punched in the face as your defense if the punches don't knock you out", which is insane for any coach to say, let alone by the guy that got his whole entire poo poo broke by 99999 Max Holloway punches. It certainly illustrates why he executed that fight that way.
