As the fresh faced ER baby I am I treated it a lot like older Souls games where magic/weapon arts are strong if you put a lot of work into them and I've just been unga-bungaing through the game with my morning star. Started experimenting to crack into pvp and tried Golden Slam, about fell out of my chair seeing 600s-800s on enemies.

Just trying to recreate stupid gimmick builds from DS3 now. Really love the wide array of toys in ER.

My big brain plan is to pick everything up organically the first time and then just do whatever I feel like or rush to pieces for my latest dumb gimmick build idea. If I end up starting a new character and full clearing again then hey yeah sure, game good, play game.

Speaking of dumb gimmick build idea I started invading today and two wins out of many losses was enough to get me hooked on sweet sweet bloodlust.

I'm mucking about at SL 60/+8/+3 since I could get armed and fully outfitted for my first dumb idea really fast. I have an easy half dozen other dumb ideas already, so having multiple ranges to pal around in seems good.

I find that a lot of fresh faced first playthrough players are being escorted by swole twinks, so at least it's a manageable fight and a set of targets with different priorities instead of 3 guys outside Rodahn's warpgate doing the JoJo curbstomp scene on you. I remember the process of being forged in fire from Souls 3, though it's a shame covenant stomping grounds are gone since Pontiff's/Aldrich was perfect. At least I can see steady improvement in every other invasion and loving the new toys and arts spread.

The swole twink "good at pve, not at pvp" duo also leads to comedy like people suiciding because they want you to leave but you keep not dying in exchanges and like, the monsters are still alive. This seems less fair when you consider the yellow summon was wearing "I've got 80 Int" gear and using Rennala's spells in... early game Sofia River Well? :v: Scared of Bull Men, I guess.

I did run into cool folks doing their n+1 playthrough of the game solo with cool builds and open to invasions for fun. Good training for my rusty rear end too.

Finally finished full clearing as much of the map as I could naturally exploring and cleared all the big bosses I'd gotten up to.

Godfrey is a bit of a big elite trash mob, ain't he? Maybe intentional so alts can rush talisman 4.

Morgott has to be my favorite voiced character in the entire extended series. Loved his swagger since he made me take the extended git gud training course the first time, wonderful build up and return to form for the rematch. :allears: Big respect for the King.

Mohg was cool, wish he had lines or interaction though.

And woof, I didn't like Yhorm in DS3 and getting a double dose in Rykard feels pretty bad. The hardest part of the fight was quitting out twice to adjust my blue sippy ratio. Go in blind, run out before P1 is over... go in with two sips, get to P2, "ah I can fight him for real now", lol nope still using the serpent ash, leave and get five sips to just put it to bed. Wish there was somebody on the dev team with the clout to say "No" when the Storm Ruler homage fight comes up.

DS2 doesn't have true 360 degree analog stick movement, it has roughly 8 point direction and although you can kind of sort of go in between the points it is very finnicky and there's a janky 0 to 100 point where you snap from one direction to the next.

It doesn't ruin the game at all and you can play through 99% of it without noticing unless you know what to look for but considering that DS1 and games from two console generations ago had figured out the analog stick it's a baffling decision and it does occasionally royally suck during platforming/tightrope walking segments.

The elevator goes up to a lava world floating in midair and you can see the top of the windmill from outside? I sure hope somebody was fired for that blunder.

Bold of you to cherry pick the most compact area in the game, which itself still has a few decent surprises and secrets and good theming(the mirrors were cool as hell), and is sandwiched between multiple open zones similar to Undead Settlement. You can likely go to the end game march after a place like Iron Keep and you've got Dragon Aerie right there on the map. There's some other straight line stinkers like Black Sepulchre but even areas I personally dislike like The Gutter are open and full of exploration.

DS2 is the weakest title imo but not much reason to complain that an 8 isn't a 9.

ER is really generous with memory slots so you need a crossbow for the mega buster, a lightsaber for zero sword(the faith sword in capital?), then eight spells for projectiles of varying diversity.

Off the top of my head: fireball, glintstone, yellow madness, holy ring, a skull, a boulder, etc

Right hand is crossbow and saber, left hand is seal and staff. Jar cannon and/or hand ballistae too.

Try swapping the ash and then swapping back? I was concerned as a newbie that if I ash'd something and didn't have the innate ash of the weapon myself I couldn't go back, but you can select and de-equip it easily, which I assume would be another prompt to change affinity.

I've been clearing the game this month with a str/end build and a golden great shield that drops from Altus knights, there are many enemies that will punish shielding as a crutch but just as many that take huge beatings from shield counters. There's an iron great shield significantly earlier than that, don't recall where though.

Mimic Tear was nerfed from omnipotent to Really God drat Great. It's your current build but with like 8k HP at +10. I usually do almost every fight once solo for my own personal Soulslike bushido but I got no problem getting that little win button out on repeats I generally dislike. Once you've beaten one Deathrite Bird despite the bullshit colossal two shot aoe they don't really change, you know?

Honestly you only get one blind playthrough of a game like this. If you find you're dying too fast too often then get more Vig, like 5-10 points more than you think. If you feel weak then explore as much as you can that feels approachable, this game is absurdly huge and layered with stuff to find. Otherwise have a wonderful time and try to keep your questions limited for awhile imho.

Squiggly trees.. I assume you mean Ulcerated, but Erdtree Avatars are kinda squiggly and keep showing up and get rotted too!

The worst Erd Avatar I fought was in North Caelid. He did the super butt stomp with enormous spreads of rot that chip damage you from 100 to 0 fast, and he did it EVERY second move. So tap him, run out, wait, repeat for like 10 minutes straight. Buggy or is the entire gimmick of North Caelid supposed to be "gently caress You, but secretly come here early for loot and farming"?

It usually didn't work out that I felt safe running around him and North Caelid is definitely in the "every two mistakes you make is a death" territory. I find most of the "giant aoe sprays and the left behind particles rapidly tic for 20% hp every .5 seconds" attacks to be truly obnoxious, except Morgott is so god drat classy his is pretty fair as a rare exception.

Oh yeah I went there crazy early and fought the big dragon legit(bleed cheese it to start alts now) and painfully cleared Fort Farroth, we're talking like level 60-70. Went back around 90 and beat up the tree, night cav, bridge dragon and bouncer in front of beast cleric.

I kind of love/hate the design of "stuff you've seen but it hits 5x as hard", it is nice to see sensibly recurring enemies return and be threatening and it really rewards you for learning to fight that enemy since bridge dragon and the erdtree av are very predictable with experience fighting easier versions of them, but also North Caelid in particular does feel a little bland at times with exception for the absolutely crazy Divine Tower.

Erdtree/Draconic Sentinels stagger but I've never been able to critically hit their glowholes, which they don't seem to show.

I just ran around Consecrated Snowland for awhile and boy is my corpse dead! Niall was a cool fight but I had one of those days where your play is off by a centimeter and you consistently gently caress up simple stuff until steam flies out of your ears. Glad we had Putrid Avatar chat, made the one in fogville much faster. I prioritized running away from them because they rotate like 90 degrees in the air so I gave way too much caution to their tracking while also assuming if I was close to their impact zone I'd get a knockdown and death in the persistent rot puddles for my trouble. Was a breeze to dash around and get a running R2.

Absolutely do not be afraid to look up any individual quest you're interested in and check the fail states or what the next step to advance is. ER is much better about it than the other games but it still has the same NPC quest problems. Sure you'll ruin some of that blind playthrough magic but I started doing it about 40 hours in and past Limgrave/Caelid/Liurna.

I managed to go the entire game without seeing a Yura trigger again after the Limgrave river and as I'm learning Big Mohg at the moment I was a bit mad until the Elenora invasion *did* spawn after a very lengthy delay.

11/10, the only limitation of a BB parry is running out of bullets. You can shoot dudes into criticals from out of the range you'd be punished for missing, merely shooting them in the dick for 200+ damage instead!

I picked up on the flame pillar visuals fast and it became one of his safest attacks. Took me five tries and I got a clean kill when I entered P2 with 10+ sips and a good strategy: shoot him with arrows and at worst eat a punishment fast fireball if I R1 too much. Worked like a charm. I love when the game pushes me strongly towards a certain way to fight and I can use something from the toolbox to defy it.

I'm using morningstar so my damage output was good for melee in both phases too. But really, the little camera zoom out and his very reliable cues made it not too bad at all.

I find the multiplayer works well once you're used to the checklist for co-op.

Use furl, set a matching password for all participants, coordinate a grace, host has boss up, still doesn't work, curse and reset everything repeatedly until it suddenly it works perfectly for the rest of the night.

Started a chill play Intelligence alt before family get together. Incredibly liberating to summon ashes and throw the bare bone baby pebble spell for 160+ a hit at range while laughing at a boss being dogpiled. The sheer relief felt after honoring my code is a great cooldown while trying to get first kills on my main.

Had a really funny Agheel kill where he back drafted up to the giant curved ruin piece nearby and refused to come down for like six attacks. :allears:

Do as much blind as you can unless you have a very, very specific need like "I need an Int weapon for my sorcery" and even then coax a thread regular into some leading pointers. If you feel stone walled go exploring and push a different wall. One of them will feel softer on your head, get you stuff and more play experience, and eventually you can go back and conquer the first wall.

The NPC quests are much better and less likely to break, but a few still can. When you're much further in the game(i.e. 30+ hours) you might want to look up the NPC and fail states for their quest.

Bank runes? Level up as much as you can then buy essentials from merchants IMO. Arrows are 20 runes a pop and even when you have 699 at mid game you're gonna go through 'em if you use the bow for utility or Marika forbid fightin'. Also carry a few overworld items that you pop to get runes for when you empty your bank and then go to smith something, big pro tip.

Whew. Got Maliketh after 2 hours. Real mixed feelings. Obviously great fight, theming, lore, fairer than it looks in hindsight, but I feel a bit mad about it like a chore. Maybe on future playthroughs with the painful forging of muscle memory mostly finished it'll sneak up my mental boss tier rankings. Maybe blackflame is just One Of Those Mechanics.

Is there supposed to be a random chance the blackflame dot works five times as fast? This is already a "mistakes cost you 70% of your Vig 60 health bar" boss, does it have to be 100%? And it pauses while I'm knocked down and then speeds up when I stand to seal the deal. I'm not letting him manually stack them with overuse of guarding, I learned the rolls, just a few attacks seemed to be an extra big You Died.

Best part is my successful run was when P2 bugged out consistently. Nothing big like "AI stops" or "stuck", he'd kickflip up to a pillar perch and then clip into it, fall to the base, phase out like a leashed dragon and respawn at the mid. Enormous benefit as his air combo finishes are pretty dangerous.

Good lore too, me realizing with dawning horror that feeding deathroot to big cleric wasn't necessarily to obliterate and banish naughty mariners and skeletons... :gonk:

Wish the parry item had been an ash. I might have bothered using it. I'm sure it makes things easier if you bounce his big moves consistently but clumsy item swapping in super tight time frames is not a good feeling. Also I learned how to fish hits off every other attack a lot faster than trying to learn item parry timings, so I just got that down. :v:

Hmm, yeah I'd think spirit ash number crunching for pvp doesn't come up much if at all yet and it's easier to normalize ashes in the arena than penalize people for not seeing a new mming requirement coming up. I'll match the ash to my somber weapons number to be safe since they're both a 1-10 scale, it's for a gimmick instead of needing a +10 Mimic or Peepeepoopoo Man for meta anyway.
