Signing up as a fighter jock, entirely to ensure that fighters are a thing.

How plausible would a pirate base on Hidalgo be? Not squarely within the Achilles league, in roughly the right direction. We can set course for Hidalgo and send the fighters+boarding shuttles on a sweep that just happens to match up with Chiron. Depending on the relative speed of Chiron and the belt it might be closer to us than to Achilles by the time we get to Hidalgo.

I don't care what the cover story is, as long as we get to actually run exercises away from the sunward side. Never enough time and sorium to practice launches and flights. Have one in mind in particular where a landing ship slows down and pretends to be a freighter with two escorts while the rest of the flight and shuttles try to get within half range. Regular breaks of a day or so, especially at the 140 Mkm range. A bit too straight a shot from us to the comet at that point. Also the day before we actually make a run to the comet.

Might be some disappointment among the pilots that we don't get to name visitors who haven't paid off gambling bets as "pirates." Personally want somebody at the comet sooner rather than later. December 1 is way too long to wait. Back of napkin math suggests that we are just short of being able to go from Hidalgo to the comet. Probably not a great idea to go there without enough fuel to maneuver, much less return. Perhaps a launch from the 41 Mkm point?

Pretty sure we are a government now, no matter what anybody says. Sometimes we take fruit from trees we don't own, sure. But pirates cut down the whole tree, future fruit and oxygen be damned.

Already waiting in my cockpit for a go signal. Can we tightbeam back home for Ares? Their microwave beams would have been perfect.

...oh I had a devious idea.

We know the AL sloop is out there. They know WE know because we used active sensors. Both of us know Pyotr's ships are out there nearby.

Can we contact the Miltiades and request assistance against the :airquote:hostile:airquote: pirates?

":ohdear: Oh no, these pirates are more than we bargained for! We give up, you can have Chiron, just protect us from the scary brigands!"

Say, for example, we burn directly away from Pyotr in an apparent evasive maneuver, instructing the Achilleans to follow behind between us and the pirates to cover our retreat? WHILE kicking our fighters out the hanger cold for them to blunder into when they follow our approximate flight path? A sudden pincer attack will certainly disorient them.

They are much more likely to just plain run away. Good propaganda, but not likely to get us the ship.

Also I am personally opposed to fouling up the flight's engines. Really wishing we could have practiced cold launches from a moving ship before the moment of truth.

1: Space Trucker Bribery Truck, plus general purpose economic stuff. Torn between asking to make it a mobile hospital ship or a salvager.
2: Snooper A sensor platform just for my flight, how thoughtful.
3: Armed and Operational Better microwave weapons = more disabled ships = more stuff for us. And easier escort runs with the boarding shuttles.
4: Scrapper I can't imagine wrecks going unsalvaged for long in this area.

Don't Sell Ideally combine it with our new freighter into a mobile hospital ship.

Fighters do a decent job of point defence. Assuming we have a forward deployment, our speed can make up for some of our targeting shortfalls.

We need for fighters. A lot more fighters.

Can we automate fighters more so they are more like drones?

Over my dead body! I might be thinking of fighter speed overriding turret turn speeds, now that I think about it. But at least we have a chance at shooting at mediocre missiles twice.

Put another vote in the Operation Hammer's Hummers pile. Hire oppressed citizens as mercenaries, with extra classes in revolution and functional government. The first big question is how do we keep the spies and true believers that are going to get mixed in from reporting back home. The second big question is how do we get credit for improving Ajax from people who want a new regime, while also getting credit for respecting Ajax's sovereignty? Invite people to audit classes while they are here for medical treatment?

We should also train some engineers and send them back, also with heads full of revolution.

It would be irresponsible to train a bunch of revolutionary troops without also giving them a post revolution career path. One that doesn't involve more killing or rulership.

You quickly confer with the Agamemnese commander. They just want to dive in, raze the place, and move on to do the same to any other suspect colonies you can find in the area. Their interest doesn't seem to extend beyond destroying any hint of a threat to their home as expeditiously as possible. You all don't really know anything abut the local situation. You can presume the Red Hands extract tribute from people cause they demanded the Agamemnese themselves pay up.

Satisfying our potential ally and solving our ally's problem might have become mutually exclusive.

We are still looking for volunteers to actually write out a succinct way of asking if they are being kept in check by hostages. Especially if they know Portuguese.

Edit VVV Thanks!
