He was drafted and I know they wouldn't let him out they instead gave him horrible duty and he ended up manufacturing ships which exposed him to asbestos which killed him years later. The family got money after he died from this. His wife my grandmother was briefly a communist and explained to me how the pacifist movement that they were a part of genuinely didn't know what was going on in Nazi Germany. My grandmother was a brilliant woman. She absolutely lost her poo poo when Reagan was elected. More than the average liberal for sure. I remember her saying that he was elected because he was a movie star; because movies all had good endings back then. She was saying this when he was elected, not later. She was recycling and mulching and boycotting anything made in China starting in the 90s and it was a pain in the rear end shopping because of this and she still did it. I'm sooooo glad she died before Trump.
