Like, I believe people when they say it's terrible, it's just baffling because it basically almost always works for me. Win11 introduced some hitching, but not enough to be a real issue, and my work laptop doesn't have anything aftermarket. As a repair guy seeing all these reports of slow start menu issues makes me think there's at least something there, old hard drives? Bad drivers? But at the same time, people treat their computers like poo poo a lot too. Especially fuckin nerds. Clean your fans, redo thermal paste, unfuck your temp files, uninstall everything you can live without for now (java, old office installs, trial VPN packages etc) and run an "in place install*" of the latest Windows 11 ISO. I'd also let everything update and then apply manual updates to drivers and the BIOS just for fun. This is my method. It works nearly 60% of the time for older installs you don't want to gently caress with. * backup your documents and porn, make a Bootable win 11 USB drive but don't boot from it, run setup.exe and choose upgrade. It'll just do a full replacement of all files, permissions, ownership blah blah that it touches.

Sometimes you can override resolution scaling/switching from the graphics driver control panel so it keeps your current res but gives you black bars. I'm kinda flailing maybe someone else has an idea

Cool! Any similarities in yall's browser setup? Are you running at high refresh/res settings? Do you have netflix 4k? Do you notice your monitor's lights flash when it happens? Does sound persist? Maybe you can help this other poster by comparing. I run Vivaldi on Win 11, 1080ti, 1080 pixels res. I definitely remember Netflix's lovely era during and right after Silverlight was required. A lot of times back then you'd have to reload or update chrome://plugins or chrome://components (firefox has it too) something to get persistent issues cleared. I think that's of the past though. Widevine is the component responsible for all your video I'm seriously spitballing here but bad HDMI/DP cables can do poo poo like this too. Long cables too.

Popping in to say to you goons fed up with the recommendations for dism, that there is in fact *one weird trick* that fixes a LOT of issues on trashed windows deployments. Resetting the network adapter. Sometimes I even do: netsh int ip reset netsh winsock reset for shits and giggles. I have seen this: make cortana work, make the start menu work, make explorer stop crashing, make the systray work, make it so there isn't 100 empty icons in systray, make wifi work, make outlook send email, make https sites work, and so on

Eletriarnation posted:e: I never noticed before that Vantage tells you the wattage of your PD adapter if you're plugged in. Neat to see my 4-port charger renegotiate at different power levels as I plug and unplug the other ports. That's actually sick as hell. Where does Vantage get that info I wonder? Is it just part of windows' powercfg set? edit: WMI doesn't seem to know about USB PD negotiated voltages, is it a UEFI thing? A sweet driver? Seems likely. Or is it strictly a neat power management thing that ThinkEngine duders get. Does Vantage work on IdeaPads then? IdeaPads don't have the ThinkEngine right? edit 2: I have multiple ammeters and usb-pd supplies, none of the sensor data from any monitoring program lines up with the numbers output by the ammeter, even the line "Charge Rate" from GCIM seems to be a "velocity" of the battery charging, probably used to figure some rate out. It has a number of 29838, where the ammeter shows 2.5 amps at 20V which doesn't line up with adapter wattage or current, probably battery side measurement. It's gotta be some special driver lenovo gets that can talk to power management chip either directly or via the cpu? edit 3: can you post a pic, i'm suspicious now of my own conclusions, I think it's not properly sampling like I'm imagining, probably just reading an adapter ID, which is fine too. down1nit fucked around with this message at 23:22 on Feb 1, 2024 |

Thanks goon! It's not reporting live sampling that the boost/buck would get, like I was imagining, rather just talking to the adapter and showing you what it's claiming as it's max current draw. I'm pretty sure the PCH gets that info as part of its power sequence. It doesn't live adjust does it? Like 92W would be your computer charging at ~4.6 amps, which it can probably do for a bit, does it drop down to showing 10W or anything over time? There's gotta be a way, either by inferring, or by using the same current sense circuit as the boost/buck, to see the total current draw on the adapter. It's built into the motherboard's hardware, how can the end user read it though? SMBus driver probably. Does Nirsoft or Sysinternals take requests?

Hasturtium posted:I do too. In the latter part of the BIOS days it was a reminder that your modern multi-core machine was still built on a foundation laid in the 1980s. With the UEFI and addition of the Graphics Output Protocol, which replaced the old VESA BIOS Extensions, I originally assumed that everything prior to the OS would get a visual shot in the arm. However, between the UEFI still needing to fit into motherboard ROM and boot environments being deliberately minimalistic, there hasn’t been as dramatic a change as I expected. Plus there are still lots of office surplus-grade monitors out there, and low overhead text interfaces are easier to debug and a smaller attack surface against malware. I really want ui/ux designers to take an attempt at figuring out how to make a UEFI screen beautiful and useful. There is a lot of useful information that is hidden beind advanced > oc profile 1 > cpu > power settings, for instance that would be helpful to surface. Instead, I have the BIOS version, date, and cpu information on screen at all times. Also a giant eyeball. msi plz

I use the start menu just fine. I like that run as admin comes up as a choice when searching. I like having icon folders, I like not having to open "All programs" immediately after hitting start. I did have to spend time customizing it. Sucks it doesn't sync. It's iphone level functionality, you're barely able to customize it, but you can. It drags bigger or smaller, does search pretty OK anymore, and only crashes every other day. It's kinda slow too so I get that part but Jesus gently caress it's just a menu for pictures and words. Have you guys tried actually using it or are you just being edgy? You just click on a picture the same as I do and the program runs. Right? Am I missing something? It sounds like a flippant question meant to insult but I really don't see any real reason to say it sucks, other than it's new (and slow sometimes). I don't like groupthink and how it can progress into grouphate like you shits post sometimes. Be realistic, think about it just a little bit more cool headed than you've been. Great posts! (Weird to take poo poo like this personally tho. I still don't see how I was defending it but if I need to be on a different "team" to get good, valid arguments then OK.) Everything: the grass will always be greener using a third party thingy and it's 100% fair to compare the different approaches. The fundamental start menu approach, ever since 95 was laughed at and only changed substantially with 98 OSR2 when the web was introduced. It was still bad, but in my opinion, improved functionally, and XP/Vista just made a lovely product a bit better. Everything took all idiocy out and just delivered a good product, simple as. They weren't locked into a patent or years of sunk costs. Things are allowed to be complex or simple depending on the use case. I agree that it's way too simple for power users. A valid point! It's OK to be level headed and distribute W's as well as L's when deserved imo, you're not in high school anymore... right?! == If you need to know about me to form your next argument, here goes: I am kinda old. I have used these things since Deskmate and I do know what good software is and isn't. You can and should leave me out of it though, I am not a start menu. I do repairs on computers for work and have seen way more problems on previous iterations of windows than anything at all in 11 (stability wise), so the dissing of something much improved is confusing, honestly and I'm genuinely interested in opinions.
