I am not much of a grill or BBQ purist but getting actual flame on stuff to crisp it up is real good and easier done on a grill vs a broiler inside the house. Like any tool there are other ones that can do the same job but not in the same way or even optimally so.

Upsides, no smoke alarms going off, no needing to run a 500F oven inside my house with AC on while its 100F outside etc. I use the grill or the smoker a lot more when its hot out so I can keep the house cool etc.

White sauce would not be my 1st preference for BBQ but I'd deffo try some now that I know that it exists. BBQ/chili/pizza purist chat is always annoying because it's kind of hard to have really bad BBQ, just some are not as great as others.

Same. New Orleans has its own cuisine but not really BBQ so I kind of like all of it I've had. Only bad BBQ is a dry or totally burnt bbq imo.

Texas Brisket or Memphis ribs have been my favorites so far.

I pissed out on college football a while back because of NCAA frustration. I also gave up on watching NFL football which I had watched literally my entire life longer than I can remember when they tried to tell the players not to kneel and the player Union overruled them within a week. Given all of the crap with concussions and how generally terrible Roger goodell is I couldn't stomach watching it anymore. Given the current NCAA rules now though I kind of feel like it might be fun to watch college football again after a couple of years off.

Possibly dubious sourcing so take with grain of salt but lmao

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/jul/06/donald-trump-hitler-michael-bender-book

quote:

On a visit to Europe to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the first world war, Donald Trump insisted to his then chief of staff, John Kelly: “Well, Hitler did a lot of good things.”

The remark from the former US president on the 2018 trip, which reportedly “stunned” Kelly, a retired US Marine Corps general, is reported in a new book by Michael Bender of the Wall Street Journal.

Frankly, We Did Win This Election has been widely trailed ahead of publication next week. The Guardian obtained a copy.

Bender reports that Trump made the remark during an impromptu history lesson in which Kelly “reminded the president which countries were on which side during the conflict” and “connected the dots from the first world war to the second world war and all of Hitler’s atrocities”.

Bender is one of a number of authors to have interviewed Trump since he was ejected from power.

He reports that Trump denied making the remark about Hitler.

But Bender says unnamed sources reported that Kelly “told the president that he was wrong, but Trump was undeterred”, emphasizing German economic recovery under Hitler during the 1930s.

“Kelly pushed back again,” Bender writes, “and argued that the German people would have been better off poor than subjected to the Nazi genocide.”

Bender adds that Kelly told Trump that even if his claim about the German economy under the Nazis after 1933 were true, “you cannot ever say anything supportive of Adolf Hitler. You just can’t.”

Trump ran into considerable trouble on the centennial trip to Europe, even beyond his usual conflicts with other world leaders.

A decision to cancel a visit to an American cemetery proved controversial. Trump was later reported to have called American soldiers who died in the war “losers” and “suckers”.

We never wanted kids, for the reason you've already pointed out - I don't want to inflict this world on another thinking, feeling human being.
But still I have to admit, that my brother getting a kid made the decision easier. I never could see myself being a father, but I'm perfectly happy being an uncle. And I guess part of it was simply getting older and more certain.

The procedure itself took less than half an hour and was completely unspectacular.

This is exactly what happened to us as well. Got lots of nieces and nephews.

Yeah I'm thoroughly anti-Elon but SpaceX has managed to crank out more advancements in space exploration technology in the past 10 years than the traditional MIC-associated space contractors have in 40.

At some point they're probably going to get approval to start firing up nuclear reactors for NTRs and things are going to get actually exciting. Meanwhile Boeing will still be trying to figure out how to get a cargo drone to not have a one in four chance of randomly exploding and Lock-Mart will be too busy fleecing every penny they can out of the DoD for the F-42 to care about space travel.

It turns out when your space stuff is being done by an entity that doesn't make way more money off the US's enormous military budget, they have some incentive to give a bit of a gently caress.

Largely agree with this except it ignores all of non human exploration stuff since Voyager 2. NASA has had a shitload of exploration stuff going on that is wildly successful. All the human spaceflight related crap is where they are terrible.

When did conservatives become the de facto anti-vax party? Did COVID finally make that switch permanent? I seem to remember that movement led by the more naturalistic, hippy, Green Party type folk who didn’t want their precious babies to develop autism. Now you have republicans in states like TN questioning all vaccines.

Trump was an ardent anti-vaxxer going back to at least 2012.

He became the defacto head of the party in 2016 and political lines along antivaxx tendencies rapidly followed suit.

I actually keep up with this a lot because of the pseudoscience class I teach which spends a big chunk of time on antivaxx stuff. You are correct that up until really 2017/8 the primary antivaxx group in the USA were upper-middle / upper class college educated white liberals. This is because they were the primary demographic that could afford to send their children to private schools which do not mandate vaccines to the extent public schools do.

Many states though started bowing to local pressure and instituting non-medical exemptions for vaccines (CA and WA notably) and swiftly were epicenters for the largest measles outbreak in 50 years in the winter of 2018/19. Some of these states have or have tried to roll back these exemptions since then. I am fairly certain that most red states will have full non-medical exemptions shortly so the stupid over the covid vaccine will also spread back into measles, pertussis etc.

e: Even up until late 2019 I used to think we could actually reverse the antivaxx trend in the USA. I am now firmly convinced that we have lost the fight on this for at least a generation. Literally every aspect of it has gotten worse / more pervasive in the last 2-3 years even well before covid showed up. Infuriatingly, covid has only helped in pushing the sentiment further into the mainstream.
