i do think there's a distinction between "does it infringe on the authors" (fair use etc) and the manga having actually been re-examined due to reader backlash, but that's a lot y'all writing because Grouchio said "the mangakas were pissed" (im sorry, aren't these all novel-first series?). there were responses from a few writers online after the apology went out but it was measured "yeah, the parodies went a bit far" stuff. the deciding factor was the reader response. people didnt want to read a cheap parody where their favorite characters are laughing about rape and murder. this still sums it up quote:Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation author Rifujin na Magonote was among the critics of the manga. the timeline is different when you go back to the source material of all the isekai anime because they started as web novels, mushoku tensei was among the first wave but you couldnt say anyone was doing it 'first'. they were basically pulling from zero no tsukaima's premise (though the ZnT guy doesnt die, hes just summoned by a spell, which also happens in isekai today sometimes) ZnT wasn't 'inventing' everything either since isekai appears sporadically throughout fiction but it was the work that ended up directly influential to the boom. helpful read https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2021-03-19/mushoku-tensei-is-not-the-pioneer-of-isekai-web-novels-but/.170429

raising additional points about isekai appearing in older works is fine i just disagree with the ending takeaway that you "cant pinpoint a grandfather of modern isekai" since 'modern isekai' does refer to a distinct boom with a notable starting point.

anime made today needs to be more like eroge actually the muv luv chars cast immediately distinct silhouettes and everything iconic about them is gone in the anime designs, its kind of wild. makes me really glad something like fate never loses touch of how iconic saber and her ahoge are. also the titular char of a lot of the twitter favorites like takagi and nagatoro is the girl and the guy is a surrogate for the viewer (though nagatoro's guy is kinda cute) but in this one the annoying senpai is the giant bear dude and the mangaka is content to self insert as a pitiful-looking ghost avatar you see sometimes. playing for both sides
