me when The Club do another win

Well folks, after another major tournament where Blegum did not live up to expectations, it is time once again for the beer league to drink away all our national team sorrows and invent some fully new and sick club sorrows.

https://twitter.com/sjotcast/status/1381860730874560520

Your favorite poo poo league has returned to the Ray Parlour forums. The Belgian First Division A aka the Jupiler Pro League has somehow survived two covid seasons and is starting up again this week. Be amazed when a dribble actually succeeds. Gasp as Vincent Kompany mixes up the U21 team and the first XI of Anderlecht. Do a face when Club bottle it in Europe again. Think about how your life’s going as a Lithuanian clogger does a hattrick on your second favorite club

During corona, it was announced that the league would go back to 18 clubs temporarily, but it’s worked so well they’re gonna keep doing it probably. These are them (in the order of their position at the end of the season)

Club Brugge Koninklijke Voetbalvereniging aka blauw-zwart (blue and black) aka (the) Club aka boeren (farmers)
~~ DEFENDING LEAGUE CHAMPION ~~

Nationwide: Club Brugge have become League champion 17 times, their longest streak being three wins from 75-76 to 77-78. They are currently on a two win streak. They've won the Belgian Cup 11 times, their longest streak being 2 wins from 1994-95 to 95-96. Club have won the Supercup 16 times, 10 times as league champion and 6 times as cup winner, longest streak being four wins from 2002 to 2005. Club Brugge won the very first Supercup against SK Beveren in 1980. They've won the Bruges Matins 21 times (which isn't really an accomplishment when you're always in the finals since 1991).

International: Club Brugge have had mixed success outside of Belgium.

-Lost the 1976 UEFA Cup final and 1978 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, both against Liverpool.
-Won the 1981 Kirin Cup.

2020-21: hot off the heels of their last title, the Club was fully set on three objectives: winning the league, winning the cup and advancing to the knockout stages of the Champions League. That however seemed to get pretty grim as the Club lost its first two home games in the league and had to beat Dortmund, Lazio and Zenit to go through the knockout stages. Eventually, an 8 out of 18 was not enough to head to the knockouts, but Club zoomed through the league during the winter and ended the regular season with a lead of 22 points (11 after halving). Sadly, corona struck in March and after losses to Dynamo Kyiv and Standard in Europe and the cup, Club forgot how to play football. They played the worst playoffs ever seen in Belgium but still became champion because everyone else was good too late. What a lopsided league.

Goals this season: league title, cup win, knockout stages of the CL (and also have some more clarity on their whole new stadium situation?)

Trainer: Philippe CLEMENT (Bel)
Main JPL rivals: Anderlecht, Antwerp, Cercle Brugge, Gent

Koninklijke Racing Club Genk
~~ DEFENDING CUP WINNERS ~~

They won the Belgian League four times and the Belgian Cup five times. They have won the Supercup twice, both times as league champions. They've also won the Second Division once, the Final Round twice and haven't been relegated since 1996.

2020-21: Genk’s season started pretty bad, seeming to have another pretty middling season despite having the best squad in the league. Firing manager Hannes Wolf to get recently released Jess Thorup on the pitch (we’ll get to this later) before Thorup loving off to Copenhagen seemed to put the club back on the rails. That changed when John Van den Brom, the third manager that year, had an unbelievably bad start of 2021 (5 points in 9 games). Genk decided to go through with Van den Brom and he thanked their trust by going on to win the cup and also almost the league. Seem to be the team that is closest to Club at this time in Belgium.

Goals this season: league win, cup win, knockout stages of the EL

Trainer: John VAN DEN BROM (Ned)
Main JPL rivals: STVV
You might have heard of: Théo Bongonda, Mark McKenzie
Founded in 1988 after fusing THOR Waterschei and KFC Winterslag

Royal Antwerp Football Club aka The Great Old

The oldest professional footbal club in Belgium, and they’ve actually done stuff. Not recently of course, after all, the last 15 years most of that time was spent in the lower divisions for being complete shite. They’ve won the title 4 times, the last time in 1957! Won the Second Division twice, last time being 2017 and won two Belgian cups, the last one in 1992 which got them to the final of the Cup Winners’ Cup in WEMBERLEY which is the last European final so far of a Belgian club.

2020-21: Laszlo Bölöni realized that the club actually wanted to start playing football instead of hoofball so he hosed off to another Belgian team (we’ll get to this later) and former Club darling Ivan Leko was called up to replace him. You’d think Antwerp would have done a background check for a bloke who was accused of money laundering three years ago, but then they also had mob boss Luciano D’Onofrio on the books so who knows. Leko ended up loving off to China because d’Onofrio kept giving him players to play hoofball with. He was replaced by Franky Vercauteren, right off his leave from Anderlecht (we’ll get to that later) who didn’t mind playing hoofball to try and eke out an ok season. They played the worst football in the playoffs and lost their second spot to Genk. Vercauteren has since also hosed off

Goals this season: league win

Trainer: Brian PRISKE (Den)
Main JPL rivals: Beerschot, Club Brugge
You might have heard of: Faris Haroun, Ritchie De Laet
Founded in 1880

Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht aka Sporting aka mauves et blancs/paarswit (purple and white)

Nationwide: This team is basically the juggernaut of Belgian football, they've been League champion for a whopping 34 times. Their longest streak is five wins from 63-64 to 67-68. They haven't been relegated since 1935. They've won the Belgian Cup 9 times, their longest streak being four wins from 71-72 to 75-76. Anderlecht have won the Supercup 11 times, always as League champion.

Anderlecht are one of the three clubs who won the Belgian League Cup. They won the last edition in 2001. They've won two editions of the Bruges Matins, beating Club Brugge twice.

International: Anderlecht are the most successful Belgian team in Europe, winning:

-The European Cup Winners' Cup twice by beating West Ham United in 1976 and Austria Wien in 1978.
-The UEFA Cup by beating Benfica in 1983.
-The UEFA Supercup twice by beating Bayern Munchen in 1976 and Liverpool in 1978.

2021-22: In an attempt to reel in Vincent Kompany’s ambitions at the club, Franky Vercauteren was put in charge as manager. This lasted all of two months before Vercauteren got tired of Kompany’s poo poo and hosed off. Kompany thus became head manager of Anderlecht, which was gonna happen anyway. Oh well. After a horrible first half of the season Anderlecht used a bro trust me on their fans and kept Kompany in charge while selling off their best talents and having not really any money to spend on transfers. Were almost bankrupt twice this season and if it weren’t for the shareholders would be. Lots of backroom drama, yadda yadda yadda, typical Coucke-era Anderlecht season. Somehow qualified for the champions playofs and then proceeded to do nothing there. All their stars are loanees so how’s that gonna work this year?

Goals: league win

Trainer: Vincent KOMPANY (Bel)
Main JPL rivals: Club Brugge, Standard, Union
You might have heard of: Mohammed Dauda, Josh Cullen
Founded in 1908

Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent aka The Buffalos
~~ FINAL EUROPEAN TICKET WINNER~~
Nationwide: AA Gent have been relegated a few times and are a four time Second Division champion, as well as Second Division Final Round Champion in 1989. After 1989, Gent haven't been relegated. Gent have won the Belgian cup three times and won the Supercup as champion in 2015. They won their very first championship in 2015!

International: AA Gent's biggest accomplishment in Europe is being a runner-up twice in the Intertoto Cup. Did decent last 2 season in Champions League and later Europa league. Decent = still in the competition after the winter break.

2020-21: Fans of Ghent have retroactively suppressed this season from their memories. The board said they would be the big challenger to Club’s dominance this year, but the only dominance they turned out to challenge was Mouscron’s dominance of the relegation zone. Kicked out fan darling Jess Thorup for hoofball expert Laszlo Bölöni, hired this already sussed out assistant Wim De Decker after and then went with their tail between their legs to the architect of the current Gent team, Hein Vanhaezebrouck. They won everything in April and so ended up 5th. What a lopsided league.

Goals this season: “We have no explicit goals planned so far”

Trainer: Hein VANHAEZEBROUCK (Bel)
Main JPL rivals: Club Brugge
You might have heard of: Vadis Odjidja, Laurent Depoitre
Founded in 1900

Yellow Red Koninklijke Voetbalclub Mechelen aka Malinwa aka de Kakkers (the Shitters)

Mechelen won the league four times, the last time in 1989, and the cup two times (the last time in 2019 while they were in the Second Division!) Got relegated a bunch and so have 7 Second Division titles in their trophy room, right next to their 1988 Europacup II and European Super Cup trophies.

2020-21: Had a pretty typical Mechelen season on the pitch, but off the pitch the ramifications of Operation Clean Hands was noticable, as the club is currently engaged in a legal battle to tell their owner to gently caress off. It doesn’t have any consequences for the football yet, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

Goals this season: playoff finish

Trainer: Wouter VRANCKEN (Bel)
Main JPL rivals: -
You might have heard of: Igor De Camargo, Kerim Mrabti
Founded in 1904

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Oostende aka de Kustboys (the Boys from the Coast)

KV Oostende are the closest team to you if you're from across the pond or across the bigger pond. If you want to look the least plastic this club is for you. They had a real good season in the second division, and since promotion have won one (1) Belgian Cup.

2020-21: Had a really good first two thirds of the season, before realizing they’re all a bunch of cloggers who’ve been overperforming for the last couple of years, bottling an almost certain chempions playoff spot to Anderlecht and bottling an almost certain Europa playoff win to Gent.

Goals this season: avoid relegation

Trainer: Alexander BLESSIN (Ger)
Main JPL rivals: global warming
You might’ve heard of: Thierry Ambrose, Cameron McGeehan
Founded in 1981 as AS and VG Oostende fused

Royal Standard Club de Liège aka Les Rouches (The Reds)

Nationwide: They've been Belgian League champion ten times now, their longest winning streak is three wins, from 68-69 to 70-71. Their last win was the 2008-2009 season. Standard has won the Supercup four times, once as cup winner and three times as league champion. Standard has won the Belgian Cup 8 times, the last time in 2018. They haven't been relegated since 1921, which makes them the team with the most seasons without relegation in Belgium.

International: Liège's biggest accomplishment in Europe was losing 2-1 to Barcelona in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup finals in 1982.

2020-21: Standard have still been on that downward spiral since we last had this thread. They’re so out of money they needed Axel Witsel to give them a bailout, and even that doesn’t seem to be enough. Preud’homme put Philippe Montanier in charge who did pretty bad with the material given, but the material is also a sqaud that’s top of the league one week and a relegation candidate the other. As Montanier got fired and there was no money to get a new coach, assistant manager Mbaye Leye got promoted to the position. He managed to qualify the club to the cup final and to the playoffs, but then managed to get a full 3 points of out 6 games. He’s getting a chance at a full season though with the club:

Goals this season: no explicit trophy goals this year

Trainer: Mbaye LEYE (Sen) Luka ELSNER (SVN)
Main JPL Rivals: Anderlecht, Charleroi, Seraing
You might have heard of: Maxime Lestienne, Mehdi Carcela
Founded in 1898

Koninklijke Beerschot Voetbalclub Antwerpen aka de Kielse Ratten (Rats of the Kiel)

There used to be a Beerschot that had a lot of trophies but that club died. This club really wants to buy that first club’s history but they haven’t gotten to it yet. This is the third attempt of making a top club under the Beerschot name (Beerschot, Germinal Beerschot, Beerschot Voetbalclub)

2020-21: Typical promotion season where the club does really well until they hit a crisis and then manager and darling Hernan Losada leaves for somewhere with less pressure but the club manages to get a good run going anyway and they almost make it to the playoffs but they bottle it in the final matchday and they get rid of the young interesting manager for a boring old fraud like Peter Maes to try and win a playoff spot next time

Goals this season: avoid relegation

Trainer: Peter MAES (Bel) Javier TORRENTE (Arg)
Main JPL Rivals: Antwerp
You might have heard of: Raphael Holzhauser, Loris Brogno
Founded in 1921 as FC Wilrijk

Sportvereniging Zulte Waregem aka Essevee

Nationwide: They were Second Division champion in 2005, haven't left the Pro League since and won the Belgian Cup in 2006 and 2017. They turn 20 in 2021!

International: Waregem's biggest accomplishment in Europe was losing to Newcastle in the 3rd round of the UEFA cup.

2020-21: It’s getting pretty scary to think, but this is probably the last season with Francky Dury at the helm. Can the Essevee board make sure Dury leaves the club in good hands for his assisants (one of them being the potential next manager (but it’s probably gonna be Simons)) Timmy Simons and Davy De fauw?

Goals this season: playoff finish

Trainer: Francky DURY (BEL)
Main JPL rivals: Kortrijk
You might’ve heard of: Jelle Vossen, Bassem Srarfi
Founded in 2001 after fusing KSV Waregem and Zultse VV

Oud-Heverlee Leuven aka OHL

Not a lot of history apart from a one time Second Division championship ten years ago. Mostly known for being hell to play against and for being Leicester’s satellite in Belgium

2020-21: Typical promotion season where the club does really well until they hit a crisis and then the old fraud manager Marc Brys they got to replace the darling manager who got them closr to promotion to the Pro League has to stay on or else the board gets offended but the club manages to get a good run going anyway and they almost make it to the playoffs but they bottle it in the final matchday and they hope the same thing will work anyway next year. They turn 20 next year!

Goals this season: playoff finish

Trainer: Marc BRYS (Bel)
Main JPL Rivals: -
You might have heard of: Sebastien Dewaest, Sory Kaba
Founded in 2002 as a merge of Stade Leuven, Daring Leuven and Zwarte Duivels Oud-Heverlee

Königliche Allgemeine Sportvereinigung Eupen aka De Panda's

What was ten years ago a quaint club with a weird moon language became a feeder club for a Qatari scam enhancement academy for promising footballers.

2020-21: almsot got relegated, but then didn’t. Typical Eupen season tbh. Corona has made it so their Qatari owners are no longer gonna try and park Qatari internationals there in preparation of the World Cup. That is not good news for the future of the club

Goals this season: playoff finish

Trainer: Stefan Krämer (Ger)
Main JPL rivals: -
You might have heard of: Stef Peeters, Jordi Amat
Founded in 1945

Royale Sporting du Pays de Charleroi aka the Zebras

They've been second division champions twice, the last time was in 2012

2020-21: they started really good and then they almost got relegated. Typical Charleroi season tbh, still trying to figure out what kind of club they want to be after Mazzu left for Genk a few years ago

Goals this season: year for reconstructing the team, no trophy goals

Trainer: Edward STILL (BEL)
Main JPL rivals: Standard
You might have heard of: Guillaume Gillet, Joris Kayembe
Founded in 1904

Koninklijke Voetbalclub Kortrijk aka De Kerels (The Dudes)

Won the Final Round three times and the Second Division twice, haven't been relegated since 2007.

2020-21: I honestly don’t know if anyone actually has strong feelings for Kortrijk seasons. They always tend to do too bad to be a playoff contender but not bad enough to be in any relegation danger.

Goals this season: playoff finish

Trainer: Luka ELSNER (SVN) Karim BELHOCINE (FRA)
Main JPL rivals: Waregem
You might have heard of: Timothy Derijck, Trent Sainsbury
Founded in 1971 as the fusion of Stade Kortrijk and Kortrijk Sport

Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging aka STVV

They won a trophy that doesn't exist anymore in 1999. Best known for being the only club in Belgium with astroturf.

2020-21: they were real bad last year and only didn’t get relegated because we’ve got worse clubs

Goals this season: playoff finish

Trainer: Bernd HOLLERBACH (Ger)
Main JPL rivals: Genk
You might’ve heard of: Steve De Ridder, Jorge Teixeira
Founded in 1924

Cercle Brugge Koninklijke Sportvereniging aka Groen-Zwart (green and black)

Last time we saw these folks they had just become a feeder club for Monaco. Did that help them? No! Not at all! They’ve actually gotten worse somehow, and they’re not teaching young lads like they used to.

2020-21: almost got relegated and honestly should’ve. Awful

Trainer: Yves VANDERHAEGHE (Bel) Dominik THALHAMMER (AUT)
Main JPL rivals: Club Brugge

Goals this season; avoid relegation, get clarity on their stadium

And now for the new blood:

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise aka l’Unionistes aka la Vieille Dame (the Old Lady) aka Union 60
~~ Belgian First Division B champion ~~

One of the first Big Clubs in Belgium and one of the founders of paid football in the country. Have the record for most consecutive unbeaten matches (60). They won 11 titles before the war and two cups also. They’re currently the feeder club for Brighton and have a really cool olskool stadium. This is their first top division season in almost 50 years

2020-21: won the 1B pretty easily with a squad that’s honestly not too bad. Were able to make Anderlecht nervous in the cup too.

Goals this season: avoid relegation

Trainer: Felice MAZZU (Bel)
Main JPL rivals: Anderlecht
You might’ve heard of: Bart Nieuwkoop, Casper Nielsen
Founded in 1897

Royal Football Club Seraing aka les Métallos (the metalworkers)

This is the first time this club has ever been in the top division of Belgefoot. They only had to buy the matricule number from a club in the other side of the country and then move it to Seraing. They are a feeder club for Metz and beat Waasland in playoffs to get the promotion.

loving playoffs, how do they work?

They don't, but here it is:
- 1 to 4 play against each other in one group with their points halved, top spot becomes champion, fourth spot plays against the winner of:

- 5 to 8 play against each other in one group with their points halved, top spot wins the chance to go for a final European ticket against fourth spot, unless the cup winner is one of the teams placed 1 to 4, then the winner immediately gets the last European ticket

- 17 plays 2 of the First Divsion B to see who gets relegated or promoted

Anyway, I feel like it's too soon for the new season to start. Haven't had time to recover from the euros. Or time to look up the undoubtedly great signings KAA Gent did so far.

Holy poo poo, the season is almost actually here, and as a teaser the Buffalo's of Gent open Belgefoot's European campaign against the Norwegian Valerenga

Vålerenga Fotball aka Vål'enga

They're a sports club from Oslo founded by a priest to give young people a place to exercise. They're Oslo's working class club and have won the league title 5 times and the cup 4 times. People who are well versed in Belgefoot will recognize Henrik Bjordal and Fredrik Jensen

The end of the matchday happened today after a rain cancellation halted Beerschot-Cercle, so here's a roundup

Standard 1-1 Genk (0-0)
OHL 1-1 Waregem (1-1)
Kortrijk 2-0 Seraing (1-0)
Oostende 0-3 Charleroi (0-1)
Mechelen 3-2 Antwerp (0-1)
Club 2-2 Eupen AET (0-0)
Anderlecht 1-3 Union (1-1)
STVV 2-1 Gent (1-1)
Beerschot 0-1 Cercle (0-1)

Only Kortrijk, Charleroi, Mechelen, Union, STVV and Cercle can theoretically get the maximum of the points.

Talk of the town this week

  • None of the big five (+ Antwerp) were able to win their opening game, the first time ever. Some clubs are blaming it on a short preseason, others on the Euros. The media see it as a continuation of the differences between smaller clubs and big clubs that are fading
  • Club scored their equalizer against Eupen in the 104th minute. The referee was tired of the timewasting by Eupen (which made it so the ball was only in play 58 out of 90 minutes) and added 14 minutes of extra time. Some fans are calling foul, but the FA and most media are actually saying 14 minutes was not enough. There's calls now for all refs to put this into account, and not go for 3 or 5 minutes because it's normal.

me when The Club do another win

Six hours left until this week's footie starts. These are the European opponents of our Belgefoot clubs for the next qualifier round

Футбольний клуб «Шахта́р» Донецьк aka Hirnkyky (the Miners)

Formerly known as the Stakhanovites, this club is the second biggest club in Ukraine after Dynamo Kyiv, and one of two clubs in Ukraine to have won a UEFA competition (the UEFA Cup). They currently play in Lviv, not Donetsk because of the Donbass War. They've won 4 Soviet titles, 13 Ukrainian league titles, 13 Ukrainian cups and 8 Ukrainian Supercups. The matches against Genk will be their first Eurofoot matches of the season

Klubi i Futbollit Laçi

Laçi is a club that has existed for 60 years and hasn't really done anything in those 60 years, apart from winning two Albanian cups. They started Eurofoot in the 1st qualifier round of the Conference League, beating Podgorica from Montenegro and moving on to beat Universitatea Craiova from Romania.

FK Rīgas Futbola Skola

This club has only existed for 10 years so far! And they'we won a Latvian cup! Much like Laçi their Eurofoot campaign also started in the 1st qualifier round of the Conference League, where they beat Klaksvíkar of the Faroe Islands and went on to beat the Hungarian Puskas Akademia team

Gent almost lost against them lmao. 2-0 down after 30 minutes. But luckily, even the mighty Latvian cloggers are no match for the most dangerous scoreline.

I'm getting flashbacks to last season. What a start for Gent. 1 point from 3 games.

Problem is we have 9001 midfielders that always pass to eachother, and almost never go forward. And when we do go forward, there's nobody to finish a chance.
Tissoudali loves to run into 2-3 defenders instead of making a simple pass. And Malede was alone in front of goal, and decided to do another cutback, allowing the defender to get back and block his shot.
In conclusion: ugh.

EDIT: and Vanhaezebrouck keeps changing the squad every game. I get that players get tired, but do you really need to rotate your squad in the second and third game of the season?

me when The Club do another win

Woops here are the Eurofoot opponents of the playoff round

Αθλητικός Σύλλογος Oμόνοιας Λευκωσίας, ΑΣΟΛ

Omonia was founded by left-wing footballers who left the Greek nationalist football club APOEL in Cyprus and their fans are a bunch of commies. Long live AKEL. They're one of the most succesful clubs in Cyprus having won 21 titles, 14 cups and 17 supercups. Their matchup against Antwerp will be their third Eurofoot match, having been booted out by Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League and having then beaten the Estonian side Flora Tallinn on penalties.

Stichting Betaald Voetbal Vitesse

The second oldest Dutch club to still be in existence, they have a bald eagle as a mascot that they let fly around during matches and they hate NEC Nijmegen. Boo. They have one (1) cup win in the Netherlands and that's it. Their match against Anderlecht will be their second Eurofoot match, after beating Dundalk 4-3 on aggregate.

Robotniczy Klub Sportowy Raków Częstochowa Spółka Akcyjna

According to Wikipedia these people have had no history before being promoted to the Polish Ekstraklasa in the 90s, however the Polski Wikipedia tells me that this club was founded by the youth movement of the Polish social democrats in the 20s. They won their very first major trophies this year winning the Polish Cup and the Polish Supercup of 2021. The matchup against Gent will be their third Eurofoot match. Having beaten the Lithuanian Suduva on penalties and Rubin Kazan in extra time. They do not like ending matches in 90 minutes!!!

Ha, it was pretty infuriating to watch. Gent plays decent enough, but in the final third of the pitch, everything goes to poo poo. Playing crosses when there's no-one in the box, trying to dribble through 4-5 players instead of making a pass, going for an extra turn instead of blasting the ball first time...

We desperately need a striker that knows how to score a goal. The last 3 goals we scored were all scored by defenders. I had high hopes for Thomas Henry, but it looks like he's loving of to Serie A, and can't blame him tbf.
The other options are a lightly used Koulibaly or that striker from that Latvian club that scored against us. Yay.

But for some dumb reason I believe we will win Thursday. The game is free for season ticket holders so normally there'll be plenty of fans. That should help somewhat. Quote this post when we gently caress up 6 chances and it stays 0-0 though.

Matchday 6 has ended

Antwerp 2-0 Omonia (1-0 HT, 2-0 AET - 4-4 aggregate - 3-2 on penalties)
Vitesse 2-1 Anderlecht (1-0 - 5-4 aggregate)
Gent 3-0 Rakow (1-0 - 3-1 aggregate)

Congrats to Antwerp and Gent, lmao to Anderlecht

Kortrijk 2-2 Mechelen (0-2)

Gent 6-1 Club (3-0)
Antwerp 2-2 OHL (2-0)
Genk 1-0 Anderlecht (0-0)
Oostende 0-2 Waregem (0-1)

Union are your sole leader of the competition. OHL and Beerschot are still in the relegation zone. Charleroi is the only club that can still do an invincible season. OHL and Beerschot have yet to win.

As all clubs have played at least 5 matchdays, here's a stylized version of the table
