Would bugs somehow know which ones are safe to eat and which aren't?

No, that's even one of the rules of mushroom hunting: what's safe to eat for a slug and what's safe to eat for a human (or dog) can be wildly different things, so don't use bugs as a guide for toxicity.

Consider that even with dogs, some things that are safe for us (grapes, garlic) are toxic for dogs, so it can very very species dependent.

Almost all of the birds here have been wiped out by some bird plague since summer. It's apparently a thing on the east coast. Finches, cardinals, grackles, brown thrashers, mockingbirds- gone. I've had healthy year-round populations of all of those forever. There's no birdsong, and I had to pull my feeders. Here and there a lone finch or grackle shows up looking for food, and a significant number of them look unhealthy with patchy feathers particularly on their heads. I'm watching an unhealthy looking one-legged grackle peck around at old sunflower shells right now.

It's all very depressing.

That's both alarming and heartbreaking :smith:

Managed to get some video of the Vaux's swifts coming in to roost in a chimney tonight. They do this twice a year - once when they migrate north in the spring, once when they migrate south in the fall. Lasts for a few days or a week, if memory serves. I forget to check them out some years, but actually got some footage this evening:

Last night as I was going to sleep I felt an itch on my arm and scratched it and I felt my hand knock something off and I almost just rolled over and kept going to sleep. But in the back of my head I thought what if it was a tick??? So I got up and turned the lights on and sure loving enough there was a tick. I have no idea how I got to sleep in that bed after that but I do know that it followed a long period of having to check every little itch for ticks. I assume it rode one of the dogs in. gently caress off ticks ugh

bed ticks, a new nightmare :stonk:
