I was allowed to study what I wanted (and what I wanted was STEM, geopolitics and literature) but it wasn't all left up to me - I had to write college-level essays and reports about whatever I was studying, which would be read and critiqued for style, research and quality of argument, thus proving that information synthesis was happening. For STEM stuff, you did labs and projects, and of course math tests are inescapable. In the process, I picked up the basic research skills that have been vital tools my whole life. The school also hooked me up with some pretty absurd educational enrichment opportunities. And there were required things on the curriculum you couldn't avoid - that school forced me to get out in nature and learn about the environment in a way that I never would have willingly and I'm really grateful for that now! It worked really well as college prep - I was essentially doing college level work already, so nothing about college was new or difficult - and it taught me a voracious love of knowledge and learning. For some kids, at least, it is absolutely, completely a good idea. (Of course I was also a total nerd dweebus who had basically never interacted with a kid who was not also some form of nerd dweebus until I was in college, and this had social consequences.) Since learning was largely self-directed, nobody noticed I had cripplingly severe ADHD despite several obvious, major warning signs, because I could tweak what I was learning to focus on my "special Interest". So in some respects, it really works super well for kids with bad ADHD. I didn't put in earplugs in a Blackhawk for a flight from my FOB to Bagram which was like an hour to hour and a half. With multiple stops. I was deaf the rest of the day and the next day was still pretty rough. Lesson learned the hard way.
