I really like this game and think it will have some lasting power. The gameplay is satisfying in a way that feels genuinely new, and it feels like they got a lot of the nuances around gunplay, movement, networking etc. right to produce something that feels great. Wouldn't be surprised to see this take off to a much greater degree than it already has.

That said, I'm finding the daily/weekly challenges increasingly irritating. I didn't mind it when I was playing much more and easily fulfilling them all. But some days, I just want to get a few games in and it feels hard not to focus on rounding out the challenges, even as someone who doesn't particularly care about cosmetics.

I had a game where I swear half the lobby had a "Kill X people with an SMG" challenge because the whole game revolved around the SMG spawn. It's really easy to get frustrated when you miss out on completing a challenge that can be somewhat map-specific (e.g. rocket launcher challenges). I know, I could try to care less about fulfilling these, but the game really tries to make them appealing with the constant casino-esque popups. I'd pay $40 to turn those and all cosmetics off permanently.

It's great to get choosy about your game types if you have trouble keeping your mind off challenges. Some of the more weird games in the casual and rumble playlists are really good for challenges without having to change what should be your normal playstyle for that game. Like splitball will always get you a boatload of melee kills and double/triple kills. It's also ludicrously fast and fun. If you need SMG or another weapon that's harder to get as a pickup then try team fiesta. You'll eventually get all the available weapons in your loadout and can usually grab a couple of kills of each type. It is also a wild and fun game. The only challenges that I haven't been able to finish almost every day with minimal effort have been the ones that require a long kill streak and that's only because I'm pretty loving terrible at the game. I'm always having fun though.

Yeah, Fiesta sounds like a great idea, I'll try that out. :)

It's not so much that they're challenging, my issue is more with how they can shape gameplay. I've made a lot of dumb plays to try to finish off a challenge. Who knows how often my teammates are doing the same.

I've been playing this pretty much every day for a while and have really been enjoying it. I've only been able to get some of my Halo and Apex pals to give it a shot but the response has been mostly positive but no one is clamoring to play it over the other games.. I've had some very fun and funny moments in the game. I'm glad to see the changes they are planning. That lack of mantling when you're close to a lip was insane. I managed to get 1 King of Carnage medal so far. That was fun...

There’s some good stuff in those update notes, but I’m really bummed that they apparently killed the regular Rumble playlist. The sillier game modes are just so fun. I understand they want to keep the core modes busy and minimize the bots that everybody whines about, but I just don’t have the skill to stay competitive and have a good time in those games.

It looks like the top left mode in the Quick Play Playlist, "Tea Bag Confirmed" has a timer that ends in a little less than 12 hours. I assume they are going to rotate modes out of quick play in efforts to focus the player population.

I love how you could almost endlessly glide with the jetpack settings in Splitball and Laser Tag. Flying around like that was so much fun. I don't understand why this game hasn't taken off more.

Unless I didn't notice before, they added sounds coming out of the playstation controller with this update.

I imagine the issue is they can't have both reduced bots AND allow people to choose whatever mode they want as that spreads the playbase to thin. So merging the modes into playlists or putting them on rotation is probably a smart idea and why most multiplayer games do it. They just need to find the right balance.

Do you feel it, Zach?
My coffee warned me about it.

It does feel weird that once they fix it, it will be the 4th major revamp of the game mode menu in a row. It seems like the player feedback they normally listen to is some very niche group that is more than happy to cut Fiesta or Splitball out of the game but would throw a major feat if something happened to Teabag .

On the other hand though it's clear that the devs are listening closely to player reactions and treat the game as a true beta where a lot of things may be changed and then even reverted if the new solutions don't work which is great.

I somehow only just found out about this game like the OP said and have been basically playing it non-stop since last week.

I can't stop raving about it to my buddies and keep begging them to jump online and play. Can't remember the last time I've had so much fun, even playing with pubbies. The premise is dead simple and the design is meh at times, but the fundamentals and guns are so well executed and the portaling adds such an interesting dimension, even I can be decent at it and on Xbone no less.

I got a the $60 Gamepass for this season since Game is Good and want to make sure 1047 gets money for it and I seem to get itchy if I go more than a month or two without spending money on a game. However the difference with Splitgate is I feel like I'm going to be playing a helluva lot over the coming weeks/months.

e: FWIW I've played for a little over 10 hours and XP rank 30 right now. I got sucked into it so bad, I did the daily, weekly, and monthly Halloween challenges in a couple of days.

ID code is Code is 5NKXGJ4R, sticksy4312 on xbox if anyone ever wants to squad up, (I'm PST).

Yeah I'm still playing but mostly just dipping in and doing my dailies. Don't wish to burn out and with no new content at the moment that would be easy to do.

Hopefully when they get done hiring the new staff with all those millions they can pick up the pace.

I hope whenever they add more content we get; big outdoor maps, a mode similar to btb, and (doubt this happens/don't know how it'd work) vehicles for the bigger maps/modes.

One thing that has slowed me down is I've liked so little of the cosmetics. I've ironically liked the battle pass ones less than the challenges or drop ones I've gotten.

Got hooked on this game at NYCC and haven't stopped playing since then. It scratches the same kind of itch that Quake 3 did way back in the day. They don't really make shooters like this any more, and it feels refreshing.

So now Halo is out I gotta say the comparisons that splitgate was a halo clone with portals in it was very much skin deep. They play incredibly differently. I played a ton of halo back in the day but clearly I'm remembering it wrong because I was kind of shocked at how slow it is and how high the TTK is and I could not get on with it. Not a knock on the game, its clearly well made just not for me.
And while I'm disappointed I didn't get on with Halo this makes me want splitgate to do well even more.
Right now its been reduced to a core number of players, not a lot but a respectable amount for an indie multiplayer game and I'm hoping with a constant stream of content it can slowly grow that.

Speaking of content. The featured playlist is 'BLOCKTOBER' which is a bunch of in progress maps with no assets for people to try out. The seasonal reward has also been released.

If Splitgate can grow enough to have BTB rip off modes, I'd never stop playing. Especially if they could figure out a way to add vehicles long term. I've been playing a mix of Halo Infinite and Splitgate since Infinite was released. I haven't been into any FPS games in a long time, suddenly I'm playing two.

I agree that they play very differently, however I feel like the gunplay in Splitgate feels more like Halo than the gunplay in Infinite. They are both great games and I really hope Splitgate finds a larger audience. I'm glad Sony didn't buy the studio that made it, at the same time I'm kind of shocked they didn't try to just to make it their Halo.
