Rob is a little goofy, and there's an ongoing discussion about him taking it a little too seriously, but he doesn't actually believe Mike has anything solid.

Plus security researchers often see things that everyone claimed was impossible; it's part of their job. Companies claim their software is impregnable all the time.

He can't afford to just toss a spare million on vanity projects like he used to

An argument can be made that he never had that ability and instead simply had debt and poor impulse control, but either way he has way less cash on hand than he did a decade ago

If you want a reason to distrust this guy, here's a better one:
https://twitter.com/ErrataRob/status/1417626923413409793

Or just go to his website, where the very top post is about how far-right vaccine resistance makes sense because radical leftists poisoned science with politics.

https://blog.erratasec.com/2021/07/of-course-you-cant-trust-scientists-on.html#more
an excerpt:

quote:

We know where this controversy comes from: politics. The above tweet isn't complaining about the $400 billion U.S. market for alternative medicines, a largely non-political example. It's complaining about political issues like vaccines, global warming, and evolution.

The reason those on the right-wing resist these things isn't because they are inherently anti-science, it's because the left-wing is. They left has corrupted and politicized these topics. The "Green New Deal" contains very little that is "Green" and much that is "New Deal", for example. The left goes from the fact "carbon dioxide absorbs infrared" to justify "we need to promote labor unions".

Take Marjorie Taylor Green's (MTG) claim that she doesn't believe in the Delta variant because she doesn't believe in evolution. Her argument is laughably stupid, of course, but it starts with the way the left has politicized the term "evolution".

The "Delta" variant didn't arise from "evolution", it arose because of "mutation" and "natural selection". We know the "mutation" bit is true, because we can sequence the complete DNA and detect that changes happen. We know that "selection" happens, because we see some variants overtake others in how fast they spread.

Yes, "evolution" is synonymous with mutation plus selection, but it's also a politically loaded term that means a lot of additional things. The public doesn't understand mutation and natural-selection, because these concepts are not really taught in school. Schools don't teach students to understand these things, they teach students to believe.

The focus of science eduction in school is indoctrinating students into believing in "evolution" rather than teaching the mechanisms of "mutation" and "natural-selection". We see the conflict in things like describing the evolution of the eyeball, which Creationists "reasonably" believe is too complex to have evolved this way. I put "reasonable" in quotes here because it's just the "Gods in the gaps" argument, which credits God for everything that science can't explain, which isn't very smart. But at the same time, science textbooks go too far, refusing to admit their gaps in knowledge here. The fossil records shows a lot of complexity arising over time through steady change -- it just doesn't show anything about eyeballs.

In other words, it's possible for a kid to graduate high-school with a full understanding of science, including mutation, selection, and the fossil record, while believing God created the eyeball. This is anathema to educators, who would rather students "believe in evolution" than understand it.

Thus, "believing" in the "evolution" of the Delta variant becomes this horrible political debate because the left-wing has corrupted science. You have politicians like MTG virtue signaling their opposition to evolution in what should be a non-political, neutral science discussion.

Reads to me like a self-proclaimed centrist who's always ready to give the right the benefit of the doubt, but will reluctantly bow to clear proof that the far-right radicals are wrong - at least, as long as he can pair it with an incoherent screed against the evils of the left.

lovely political takes aside the guy is a legitimate expert in his field and would suffer a massive credibility hit if he made a false claim. This isn't a Jovan Pulitzer style self-styled expert; this is a guy who wrote tools that are widely used in the network analysis field.

Also, the infosec community is pretty left leaning as a whole, at least in my exposure to it, so he'd be called out immediately by tons of people.

That is a critical point. But at this point its very Russell's Teapot of Voting Fraud, you cannot really disprove something that was never even possible of being proven, especially given the source.

Slightly tangential, but didn't Lindell pull his funding from Fox for being insufficiently fascist for his tastes? And wasn't he the one subsidizing Tucker? So what's going to happen to Fox in general and Tuck in particular now that Lindell is looking for more overtly fascist rather than merely cryptofascist mouthpieces, and also now that his money may well dry up when the lawsuits are done with him, anyway.

I think Lindell's objection to Fox is that it's not Trumpy enough, not that it's not fashy enough, Lindell has always struck me as much more enamored in the Trump cult of personality than in a specific political ideology.

Everything is AWESOME!
Okay, a quick recap of some of the highlights from tonight. I wish I had recorded to snip out the incredible comedic events that occured.

- Part way through the analysis of a VM image from Mesa, the "tech professional" they invited to help them look at the "file tree" had to tell them their lawyer told them to stop the analysis because the drives were reported stolen because they were obtained under false pretenses, someone lied about who they were to get them.

- but it's okay we'll keep going we just need to hand back the drives we got copies it's no big deal we're just looking at the copies here

- During the analysis they found SMOKING GUN PROOF someone modified the machines on election day! This Event Log entry says the TrustedInstaller service started up just shortly before polls opened on election day! (this is evidence someone pushed the power button to turn the machine on)

- "SEE QUEL Server? That's suspicious. Isn't that a database? Why would a voting machine need a database?"

- "This batch file called dehardenMachine.bat is very strange! It's not a normal file that a computer comes with. Someone had to intentionally make this code. And this old stuff, cryptic, DOS stuff. Very strange that it's here."

- "I'm not a bat programmer so I can't really tell you what this does. Do we have any bat programmers out there?"

- "does anyone have the windows hardware configuration files"

- Dr. Shiva, infamous natural healing/antivax con artist makes an appearance. He insists that "old pharma" is dying and they're all moving into vax because it's unregulated and more profitable. (:psyduck:)

There's more. But that's just from reviewing my TVIV Discord notes with the nerds. I might ho back through this post and add some formatting a bit later, but goddamn this was a rollercoaster.
