I wish at the very least they either just had more than three slots for pins or made cosmetic pin slots separate.

Maybe one pin each per ability, and four pins for cosmetics.

Yeah, I was hoping I could buy an extra slot later. Didn't vary much with my set of pins but it was a nice surprise that you can use the speed-time-up pin to make the Funicular faster!

Yeah, the design feels poorly thought out for this reason alone. Just don't limit cosmetic pins at all, or just get rid of pin slots altogether - make pins either permanent upgrades, or mechanical toggles.

Like the 50% off the shop pin is an example of a pin that should just be an upgrade. You toggle it on at the shop, then off when you're done. There's no real tradeoff or choice there. The timestop speeds thing up seems mostly like a silly toy/gimmick that doesn't really give you an advantage.

Curious, does the game outright state the time gap from the instigating events is 20 years? It seems to make much more sense that it was 30-40 years, given everyone's relative ages.

Discendo Vox posted:

It took some digging (most references seem to have been removed since the game was released), but here you are: The Li-Po Backstory Document. These were design docs from when the first game was in development so some of it was changed and much of it was unused, but it developed a lot of family backstory tied to the Aquatos and Galochios. The original backstory involved the Galochios actually existing and a tragic feud, and no reference to the stuff made up for psychonauts 2 (the strange figure who gives Raz the camp flier was teased as being tied to the Galochios). The sequel was unlikely to directly interrogate Raz's family history unless the antagonists were tied to the Galochios; it appears more likely to have focused on the composition and politics of the psychonauts, which were more contentious. ...As it stands, the devs did a lot of work to ensure they didn't have any remaining plot threads for a third game. Instead, they smashed together the spy-oriented psychonauts stuff with the intern squad, the family backstory of Raz, greatly expanded and distorted, and the founding of the psychonauts, all into a single game. (in the process, they did something I always hate, which is giving your protagonist a retroactive pedigree directly tied to Important People).

Gosh, I could read Psychonauts backstory/lore stuff all day.

Also, a bit of digging led me to this short thread from 2013 focused on the leaked documents:

A lot of dead links unfortunately, but one thing that survived was a backup of the Friendster profiles of all the campers:

In terms of number of levels, there are four left. Cassie and Bob both have long levels, and then there's two shorter levels. Then the final boss. You lose access to the overworld once you enter the second last level, but you do get a couple of opportunities to buy items before the end of the game.

I feel like the system where the game doesn't show you which figments you're missing, unless they happen to be part of a set of identical ones, is kind of stupid. I started thinking I encountered a bug when I was missing 2 figments in Hollis's mind, but when counting the figments in the menu only came up 1 short.

Remembered seeing the speed up pin and 'oh! I bet this is like the Cobweb Duster and a required pin.'. Left, grabbed it and it proceeded to speed up the windmill.... buuut didn't do anything.

I left that level for last of its set because I just didn't get it.

I took an accidental break from the game but finished it last night, really only had like an hour or so to go until the end haha. I really loved it. It was a sweet ending and the post-game chatting and catching up with everyone was nice. An extremely pleasant game all around. I'm level 90 something, with only a few scavenger items left to find, few psi cards, and a handful of figments and such from full completion. Tore my hair out finding last-ones in casino, psi-emporium, and that goddamn banana on the island that I took an hour to find even after reading an article about that exact banana being sure i already got that one.

So tempted to pop back in for a bit to get the last few things, som I remember missing or not being able to get while playing through level initially, others it would be complete sweeps and re-sweeps. Grulovia for instance, missing only one. Maybe it's hidden in the play, but it's annoying to check all variables there. and then you hop in a cart and are stuck for the whole ride... even in the re-play version, augh! So maybe i wont.

but the 102 badge.... wanted it all game since at the start when i gunned for it not realizing it wasn't 102 like college course but level one hundred and two requirement.

Anyway, lovely ending, made me tear up a bit and seems like there's two great DLC hooks built in already? If not, still a satisfying conclusion.

In the Grulovia play you don’t need to use the cart on replays, the bubble will take you where the figments or any other things are.

If it’s figments you’re missing someone linked me to a Google sheet just a bit up thread that references them to the figment picture list in the journal. It’s a bit of scrolling and checking to find the pictures you’re missing or something you’re at 1/2 or whatever on but it was way faster than just watching a video of them all to find the few you’re missing.

The one I missed in Grulovia was a candle in the window of one of the houses in the first ride scene. This is unlikely to be the one you're missing, but who knows. Other tricky spots are behind the family in the two sections between Happy/Flooded Grulovia and Cruller Attacks!

The Diaspora diorama only has differences based on the backdrop, the tricky bit is aligning the props so they can be used as platforms. And there is something in... I wanna say the mine in the desert, but one of the two that aren't ocean requires climbing on the props.

A lot of people are talking about Ford as though him not getting punished means the game is saying what he did wasn’t that bad. I say, it can be the case that what he did was really bad and stupid and harmful, and also he doesn’t get punished for it. It’s made very explicit in the game that what he did was wrong. Heck, you can even have Raz tell him that explicitly, which I love.

However, when it’s all said and done, he doesn’t experience further retribution because none of the people he wronged feel the need to push for it. Lucretia doesn’t articulate her exact feelings about him but is clearly still affectionate toward him. Agustus says he feels Ford has suffered enough that any debt has been paid in full. Helmut doesn’t blame him for what happened. All the other Aquatos are more interested in moving on and making the most of their post-curse life than seeking justice. If any of them had pushed for further action against Ford then it probably would have happened, but everyone just wants to move on, so the matter is closed.

Honestly the one I’m most surpised about is Raz. He was super unhappy and felt like a stranger in his own home for, it seems, years because of Ford’s meddling. Also, Ford was his idol, which meant he had even further to fall from Raz’s good graces. On the other hand, Raz is 10, so it’s probably reasonable that he’s so willing to forgive and go back to seeing Ford as a cool psychic hero.

I gotta say, the weirdest thing about this game in retrospect was Otto. This game’s story and characters have a lot of noticable seams from script rewrites and merges, but it seems like he got the worst of it. All the stuff you see of him in the past paints a picture of a totally heartless guy who didn’t really care about the other Psychic Six and was really only cares about making inventions and getting funding. They really push the point that he was the only one that seemed happy at the Motherlobe ribbon cutting. However, from the moment you meet him he comes across as a really nice, albeit comically ethically dubious, person. If there’s anyone he would be a dick to it would be Raz, who is the most junior and therefore most subordinate to him member of the Psychonauts. Yet he goes out of his way to make Raz feel welcome and enable his success. Then later, during the reunion of the 7, he seems positively thrilled that Ford is back, and Helmut, and Lucretia. He seems to have a good rapport with everyone. In Bob’s mind, you find out he put a lot of effort into forging a sword for Bob and Helmut’s wedding ceremony. Bob and Cassie don’t have the rosiest pictures of him, but they both have issues that color their memories. So yeah, I feel like the Otto we see in mental vaults and newspaper clippings is from one version of the script and the Otto we meet is from another.

Speaking of Otto, there’s one thing I’m really not clear on. When exactly did he find Helmut’s brain in the Heptadome? When you find it it’s in the “unprocessed brains” section. There are thousands of processed brains which have all been analyzed thoroughly enough to determine their psychic specialty in life. Presumably Helmut’s brain and the other five or so unprocessed ones hadn’t yet been analyzed, and that analysis would have revealed that there was still a spark of thought in there. The fact there’s so many processed brains and so few unprocessed ones implies to me that processing happens fairly often and thus Helmut’s brain hasn’t been in there long.

However, I just went back and rewatched the “Ford Forgets” vault. In it, Otto looks young when he discovers the brain and the Heptadome isn’t overgrown. This would mean that Otto discovered the brain 20 years ago. If that’s the case, why has it been sitting unprocessed in the brainframe for so long? It would have been one of the first brains in there.

Personally, I think Otto discovered the brain shortly before the events of the game and the reason he and the Heptadome look so young in Helmut’s memory vault is that Helmut hasn’t seen them in 20 years, so that’s how he conceptualizes the event. He didn’t actually see Otto find him.

Seven idiots and a bear walk into a dragon's lair.

I assumed it took some time for Otto to find Helmut's brain, possibly a couple years if he was busy with other things. Since it was unidentified, it wouldn't have received any higher priority than any other project Otto was working on and by the time he got around to it, Helmut might have been isolated too long to respond coherently.

From there, you can kind of see how the brain ended up on the backburner for Otto. It's going to need more work than expected, it might be no one important, he's got other things to work on and frankly, Otto seems like the type to get easily sidetracked by new projects and forget old ones. He wouldn't have just discarded the brain because he does want to know, but never quite has time. Hell, the fact that Helmut's brain is unlocked and available for an intern to take may even indicate he was going to make Gisu deal with it.

All of this is speculation obviously, but until we know more about Otto, that's all we can do.

Otto to me reads like he has ADHD. That may just be projection on my part, wanting to see my own disability in media, but it would explain a lot of these inconsistencies. The lack of attention to social cues means he could easily be inappropriately chipper at the culmination of a project he had worked long and hard on while everyone else is still recovering from the Deluge. The sheer proliferation of ideas around him and the influence of his moods on his work is also a pretty key facet of ADHD. Hell, his use of an external focus is even in line with some of the coping mechanisms I've noticed myself and people like me use. Also, he probably has some level of social anxiety or rejection-sensitive dysphoria, meaning the continual denigration of his inventions is yet one more crime we can lay at the feet of the coward Ford Cruller.

There really is only one way to know for sure. Mind of Mentallis DLC when, Double Fine.

Also I don't read too much import into the Brainframe having so many processed brains, because those are all Kickstarter backers, and I consider anything to do with kickstarter backers non-canon.

I definitely don't consider the Kickstarter brains canon but I am prepared to believe that Otto has access to the brains of deceased Psychonaut agents (at least the brains that were retrievable postmortem) since he outright said the Psychonaut contract includes that their bodies are donated to science. They may not be functional in the way that Helmut's brain was but they'd still be useful for research into the psychic mind. And if Otto has even 1% of the Kickstarter list as a backlog of brains awaiting study, it's no wonder he never had time to process and identify one mystery brain.

The in-canon explanation is that those are all deceased Psychonauts who donated their brains upon death. There may not be as many in-canon as there are Kickstarter backers in reality, but just by looking at it you can see there are at least hundreds of brains in there.

Oh that sounds cool. Is there a recording of that anywhere?

There’s so much dialogue in this game that’s easy to miss. I’ve been watching different playthroughs of the game and through one of those I saw that there’s new dialogue options for if you Talk to Cassie after meeting Bob in which you tell her that you brought Helmut back.

The new psychoseismometer in Otto's lab could be fun for those who like the combat. The original 3 already scaled with the story, so I imagine that they could make combat encounters that really take advantage of the unlimited chaining of powers that is given as a bragging right when one 100% the game.

Discendo Vox posted:

[...] it appears more likely to have focused on the composition and politics of the psychonauts, which were more contentious. [...]

I could very much see this be a part of a sequel's plot, what with most of the original founders being uncomfortable with the current form of the organization, Otto being the only who's truly enthusiastic about it because it led to better funding for his research. Cassie was uncomfortable enough with the new direction that she outright left, Compton is implied to have stayed partly because he feared the judgment of Ford and Otto, Bob saw it as an escape from his grief but was eventually forced out and Ford would apparently very much prefer to return to basics. That last point worries Otto and although Forsythe would gladly welcome Ford back as a hairdresser, there is no indication that she would like to have him back in a position of influence.

For the old-timers, there is also the fact that the Psychonauts being an international spy organization is the result of their intervention during the Deluge of Grulovia, which threw them on the world stage but remains a scarring, traumatizing event for them.
