Have I mentioned how much I utterly love manga about manga or anime about anime (or the other way around, I suppose - I'm not picky).
All of it is absolutely my jam, and I wish there was more of it.

id describe the anime as a mediocre adaptation of strong material. its still decent but it doesnt really even attempt to improve on the material and there's several points where it comes across a little lifeless. the material's strong enough that it's still good but id recommend the manga over it.
It's probably just me being jaded, but these days I find that I'd much rather watch OVA/ONA than any adaptation as the source material is almost always better.

there are definitely adaptations that elevate the material. most of kyoani's work comes to mind, demon slayer too. id say new game s2 also did a good job turning a 4koma with hints of narrative into a proper story.
It's good that there are exceptions to the rule.

are you sure you know what an ona is, because blue period is one (because it's made for netflix, a web platform)
As far as I remember from back in the mid-to-late 2000s when they became popular (ie. with things like Candy Boy), it means Original Net Animation, meaning it's something that's published on the internet first, and not an adaptation of something existing.

original doesn't mean what you think it means. it's an original animation, it says nothing about the source. that's why netflix exclusive anime are all considered onas, even if they're manga adaptations like blue period
Maybe its definition has changed since then, that's perfectly possible and just a form of linguistic drift - but that only highlights the need for another way to distinguish between things that are adaptations of existing works and things that aren't.

Some of the best work I've watched have been things that aren't adaptations, because when people working on something aren't adapting something, they're more willing to take risks.
To see this, look no further than Satoshi Kons last work which was animated by Madhouse and published on the Ani*Kuri15 compilation disc, or basically anything that's come out under the Japan Animator Expo series over the years.

homeless snail posted:

no, its always meant that. theres lots of 80s ovas that were awful one episode manga adaptations for too much money
It's not how I or any of the friends that I talk about anime with with use it.

The Colonel posted:

adaptation, is the word used to distinguish, between original and adaptation

i dont even understand where this comes from because lots of 80s and 90s ovas, were adaptations
Sure, I get that that's the word for it - but not even AniDB (which has by far the best filtering options, out of all of the ones that exist for keeping track of what you've watched) has a way of filtering for it.

It's a case of both being more aware of it (a lot of stuff back in the day didn't get translated, especially if it got an early cancelation/short run, and the internet wasn't openly discussing as much media, look how a bunch of anime from the 90s and 00s barely got attention but nowadays with a cursory glance on ANN or MAL you'll see everything and a good majority outside of children's shows are getting an official translation), and magazines like Shonen Jump churning through more new series to try to get a big hit a la Demon Slayer, jjk, one piece.
If you use a site like baka-updates, you'll see how many series have rushed endings because they got cancelled.

It'd be interesting to get some percentage statistics on how many are published vs cancelled, and optionally have a distribution based on age and time for when the cancellation occurs to see if it's changed.

are we talking about the same "anime voice as a contrast to how japanese is spoken in japan"?

i don't mind doing a voice for a role, that's what voice actors are paid for - it's just that there's always a large portion of people who think anime is how japanese people speak (though i'd hope nobody here believes that)

and also legitimately good advice of her realizing the field was more about being able to draw competently within a deadline rather than being the best artist ever
for the longest time i thought whenever people were talking about this they were referring to Hagino Makoto which confused me so much

she's since disappeared off youtube again which is a bummer, as her streams were super comfy

Referring to something by its key identifier in a database isn't a meme, and it's not related to any hentai site.

I've seen goons do it here on SA and on SynIRC, it was a big part of the XDCC scene on IRC, and I remember it being done on BBS' back in the very early 90s - so it's probably older than that.

It won Anime Expo 2002 (link also contains spoilers, so maybe click after - but definitely read the story as it's a microcosm of early-2000s internet and anime culture intersecting).

I'm also semi-convinced that AMV Hell is directly, if in part, responsible for the Youtube Poop phenomenon, becasue it predates it and features quite a few hallmarks.
