Have I mentioned how much I utterly love manga about manga or anime about anime (or the other way around, I suppose - I'm not picky). All of it is absolutely my jam, and I wish there was more of it.

Some of the best work I've watched have been things that aren't adaptations, because when people working on something aren't adapting something, they're more willing to take risks. To see this, look no further than Satoshi Kons last work which was animated by Madhouse and published on the Ani*Kuri15 compilation disc, or basically anything that's come out under the Japan Animator Expo series over the years. homeless snail posted:no, its always meant that. theres lots of 80s ovas that were awful one episode manga adaptations for too much money  The Colonel posted:adaptation, is the word used to distinguish, between original and adaptation

Julias posted:It's a case of both being more aware of it (a lot of stuff back in the day didn't get translated, especially if it got an early cancelation/short run, and the internet wasn't openly discussing as much media, look how a bunch of anime from the 90s and 00s barely got attention but nowadays with a cursory glance on ANN or MAL you'll see everything and a good majority outside of children's shows are getting an official translation), and magazines like Shonen Jump churning through more new series to try to get a big hit a la Demon Slayer, jjk, one piece. It'd be interesting to get some percentage statistics on how many are published vs cancelled, and optionally have a distribution based on age and time for when the cancellation occurs to see if it's changed.

Endorph posted:i mean a little? but not nearly as much or common. and even the people who do do it are doing it on a way more casual level. listen to clips of like, hololive gen 1 or 2 in their debuts versus now. its dialed down a ton even if a couple of them are still doing a voice. i don't mind doing a voice for a role, that's what voice actors are paid for - it's just that there's always a large portion of people who think anime is how japanese people speak (though i'd hope nobody here believes that)
