Be honest in your cover letter. Interviews are a two-way street so let me ask you this question:

Would you want to work for an employer that views you taking care of your dad as a downside?

Feel free to send your resume to me at the email in the op as well as what you're looking for. I'll take a look at it

Quick backstory: I have a very specific niche MA and I have been out of the work force for some time due to family and health issues. Right now I'm taking care of my dad who has dementia but I'll likely be getting some in-home help with that soonish, which means I can return to the workforce.

I'm looking for a nonprofit sector job, preferably in something like development but I'll take almost anything to get my foot in the door. I would prefer part-time for right now but open to full time.

Problem: the gap in my resume. I don't really know how to address this & fear that any employer would just trash my resume upon seeing it.

I also would really need someone to look over my resume and maybe give me pointers about a cover letter.

There is a job I have in mind that I might apply for, though it'd mostly be for practice since I don't know if I could even accept the job if I were offered it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a 16 month gap taking care of my Mother in Law and I listed it as a job at the top. Caregiver - Date - and listed responsibilities. I only got asked once about it, and since it is family and medical in nature, no one wants to ask the wrong questions and get accused of breaking labor law.

The one person who asked about it, was asking questions about what options were out there for one of their family members.

Edit: I did get a job with the resume with this listed.

actually write one rather than just sending the same template over and over again

also use something to check your grammar and poo poo, but the person reading will sniff out a template every time

e: also recognize the cover letter probably only gets read if they're interested already.

This is a really sad post, but I work for a Green energy company that is hiring Wind Techs to work at ONE SITE for more money, more PTO, and minimal travel.

That being said
My company has posted openings - on the past three days - for a wind tech based in OK, a mechanical supervisor in TX And remote roles for a software engineer and a real estate specialist.

maybe someone on these cursed boards will have an idea for me—

I was in a contract position for 4 years at the Texas DOT looking at rocks, but because of covid they made me half time instead of full last August.

I got an on-call/intermittent job for FEMA as an environmental compliance specialist in February, onboarded in March, and told my contract manager about the FEMA thing “hey the government could call and pay me better than you and offer me full time work at random” in April.
Some poo poo happened, and I was told I was being laid off while the contract company told the state unemployment agency I really quit, and I’ve been living off of savings and a drip feed of FEMA training money.

I met a guy who’s part of the environmental office at FEMA that has been in the same intermittent on-call position as me since 2018 - he said from 2018 through the start of 2020 work was really consistent, but covid threw a wrench in that and he’d mostly been on unemployment in New York.

This is interesting to me, since I think I can do the same thing in Texas - after working for FEMA for a few months at a time, file unemployment, and wait for another hurricane. That sounds great!

My problem is this: FEMA hasn’t called yet. I got an email saying they expect to send me somewhere in relation to Ida damages soon, but that could still be weeks to months away.

What job can I get when there’s the potential for me to disappear for months at a time with usually only a few days notice? I’ve had interviews for all kinds of random positions this year but when I explain the FEMA thing the interviewer loses interest and I never hear back.

e: and of course fool that I am I’ve spent the pandemic wasting away instead of pumping iron otherwise I’d try and get day labor work or something. I can sell plasma I guess

Full disclosure: I have almost no pull and I am not a recruiter. I however can talk to the people who do the interviewing. PM if you're interested.

I had quit my job in NYC during covid and spent the whole year working in a farm upstate with friends. Realized i hated the industry i was in and loved working outdoors in the dirt. So i have been looking into working with the NYC parks department, unfortunately all the available positions show a requirement for a drivers license. I was actually in the process of getting one (got a learners permit and started learning to drive), but covid and the DMV shutdown put that plan on hold. Should i still apply to those jobs with that caveat or wait until i get a license.

Anyone got advice on how NYC parks department works/hires?

That means payroll either abruptly quit, took a vacation on a pay week and are about to get fired because of it, or died of Covid.

it's apparently a "global issue" affecting an absolute shitload of people and they "hope" it's fixed and everyone gets paid by the end of the day but they couldn't tell us what happened and said they might just have to mail everyone paper checks which would happen "early next week"

I’m in the American Payroll Association and tons of LinkedIn groups about payroll. I haven’t seen a peep about any issues in any groups or forums and google hasn’t shown any issues either. system glitch is code for “an employee hosed up” in payroll world.

General resume strategy question: shorter or longer? I had an old boss tell me it was absolutely essential to keep your resume to one page, but I'm also hearing it's super important to brag about yourself. As I've racked up almost a decade in my industry, it gets more difficult to be precise about my experience without being verbose.

Basically I can't all the cool poo poo I've done on one page, plus I've gotten some very quick rejection emails lately and I'm starting to think the issue is the format of my resume.

Really depends on industry. Like academic CVs should include everything possible. lovely retail jobs should be a single page.

I like to think the rule of thumb is anything that requires you to jam your foot in the door should be a page, anything that's hiring you specifically on merit should include everything

generally speaking if you're applying for jobs that want a bunch of experience you should demonstrate that experience. if that means your resume is longer than a single page, it doesn't particularly matter.

the "1 page resume no matter what" stuff is for parsers and recruiters in my experience.

been doing some reading about Utah labor laws.

https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title34/Chapter28/34-28-S3.html?v=C34-28-S3_2014040320140513

quote:

(b) An employer shall pay for services rendered during a pay period within 10 days after the close of that pay period.

https://le.utah.gov/xcode/Title34/Chapter28/34-28-S9.html

quote:

(a) The division may assess against an employer who fails to pay an employee in accordance with this chapter, a penalty of 5% of the unpaid wages owing to the employee which shall be assessed daily until paid for a period not to exceed 20 days.
(b) The division shall:
(i) retain 50% of the money received from a penalty payment under Subsection (2)(a) for the costs of administering this chapter;
(ii) pay all the sums retained under Subsection (2)(b)(i) to the state treasurer; and
(iii) pay the 50% not retained under Subsection (2)(b)(i) to the employee.

The pay period ended on the 10th.

this seems to say that they now owe me 5% of the late wages extra, with 2.5% going to the state.

Guess how tomorrow's training zoom is going to start.
