anyone know of any (ideally work-from-home) jobs that offer actual training for Computer-Toucher skills that aren't a scam? I ask because I saw something on indeed that looked promising, until I read some reviews on reddit about the company and learned that they pay poo poo wages during training (expected), and if you leave/get fired for any reason within the first 2 years, you owe them $20,000 for the privilege.

Basically I want to get an actual, non-retail job, but I don't want to bust my rear end on code academy for courses that only might help on my limited days off.

sorry I’ll clarify a bit since my last post was a bit vague. this is a professional WFH job with a big company. you need experience in the things I listed. not necessarily professional, but at least serious hobby level. send me a resume or portfolio of websites you have created or worked on. an interview would be necessary with me and my design lead, so I can get you in the door but if he doesn’t like you sorry. and I’m not gonna tell him I know you from a comedy website

Someone's already been in vague contact but we probably have one of those ~six-figure~ programming positions opening up this summer for someone with 3-5y of industry experience.

Or it might be more computational biology and chemistry and pay more, they haven't let me know. This one would probably require a P.hD or a rockstar Masters + really solid coding experience.

If you feel like moving (metaphorically, we're 100% remote supporting) and you computer touch at a decent level shoot me a pm and we can start talking. We've already hired one goon from this thread :sun:

Not really looking for a specific job at this point, more asking for advice-

I've worked at a restaurant in Iowa for about 10 years, and have been contemplating jumping ship more and more lately. Long story short the owner insists on still paying 2012 wages and I'm getting sick of having to cover an extra 10-15 hours a week when people don't want to get paid $11 an hour anymore.

The main issue is that I've been in the restaurant industry long enough to know that any other gig is going to be the same poo poo with a different smell, and looking at another career is complicated since:

-The last time I applied for a job was in 2012, and before that 2011, and before that 2006
-My degree is a bachelor's in history (lol)
-I have never written a resume in my adult life

Where exactly would someone start given the above? Like I said, this isn't urgent by any means, I'm just idly looking around and considering the future.

writing a resume is tough to do, but there are a lot if ways to get advice. At one point, there was a good who had a resume writing service who advertised on sa-mart. you can always just google "writing a resume" and theres a not insignificant chance a friend or family member that knows something, just ask.

The skills you learned researching and writing history (being detail oriented, analytical, able to see underlying connections and causes, etc.) to graduate with a BA can be great fodder for a cover letter.

The challenges you mentioned are easily surmountable $11 an hour is some bullshit man you deserve better.

Oh no don't misunderstand, *I'm* getting decently paid, the issue is *everyone else* getting paid better. We've had three cooks leave in the last month or so due to getting better pay/hours elsewhere, and another has an offer on the table that I'm encouraging him to take if the boss won't match it. I'm fed up with the boss acting like it's still 2007 and there's a constant stream of college students kicking down the doors to get 10/hr part-time for beer money (or whatever the gently caress he thinks is the case, not totally certain of his interpretation of reality). The nature of the game has changed, he doesn't want to play by the new rules, and the result is inevitably me warping from 40 hours a week to 60 or so to pick up the slack. That's the problem.

Hi Friends -

If my LinkedIn is any indication, the fintech/crypto layoffs are starting to get pretty bad. If you're in the technology or scientific space and getting affected, please feel free to reach out. There's a lot of Biotech opportunity right now and I'm reasonably well positioned to forward resumes to hiring people across the industry if you meet a niche that's necessary.

Basically: I'm happy to help if I can and you have skills that fit in the field.

Anyone could direct me to resources to help me get my CDL license or what expect? I'm applying for DSNY to become a walking raccoon, it's a longshot but the CDL would help in the current work I do anyways. It looks like I need to have taken some pre-courses and witness which can be got from a CDL school, but if I do pass my DSNY test they will pay for the license proper?

DSNY typically requires you have a CDL Learner Permit at the time of appointment or the time of exam, read the examination notice carefully. They will then allow you to get your hours and courses in using their trucks and possibly their own classes. If you get appointed your union will have a ton of information and resources for the process I'm sure.

The permit is via exam and the whole process is outlined here https://dmv.ny.gov/get-cdl

The exam has a reputation for being rather challenging so probably do some prep, I haven't taken it personally. I do work a civil service job so i have some familiarlty with the whole DCAS process but I don't work in Sanitation specifically.

Talked to some bar regulars who work sanitation and turns out that a permit is ok but having the CDL itself gives you a leg up and the number of people that have applied is insane this year (although the application document says you need a CDL by date of appointment, so the guys could have been bullshitting). I have till September to get that going, and i kinda need the CDL for my current work anyways (farm upstate NY). Getting a CDL doesn't seem like that big of a problem (other than paying a hefty fee for classes and endorsements).

I am worried about the DCAS test tho. No samples, no info on content etc. I could find very little information about it, and from what i have heard, you have to score above a certain level to get ahead.

Soul Dentist posted:

Sanitation worker. I wanna rummage through NYC garbage.

It was NYC Parks dept or DSNY as my dream job, and with the current hiring drive that DSNY seems to have going atm im going head first into this. Either way a CDL would help with NY parks and rec application too.

If anyone has experience getting a CDL and could provide advice, would be much appreciated.

Hey all,

I've been working in the medical field as a Behavioral Health Specialist for about 10 years now. I'm recently out of the field and looking for something that's work from home.

With what I was doing, I've got extensive medical terminology knowledge, data entry, reception, customer service, etc, knowledge that comes from being a nurse, counselor, and business supervisor hybrid without a degree in any of the above.

I reached out to Gorilla Business via PM to see if his workplace has expanded to TN, where I am, but also wanted to see if anyone has any openings that could utilize any of my mish-mash of skills.
