I did end up doing that for a while, but I picked them up again after I had conquered all of the anthills. Except for one more outbreak the ants are defeated. Killed of a senator AI, leaving a High Priestess that does not seem to have that much, mostly hordes of humans and uuh they do not fare well against high level witch summons. Also tried conquering the fallen capital but the litch emperor murdered 2 hags, 1 manflayer and 300+ assorted cannibals/bog beasts/ghosts and other spooky things almost singlehandedly so now I just have two smaller stacks with spirit sight units on constant watch for spawns there while holding 3/4ths of it :v:

Decided to try out the a Cloud Lord(I can't stop starting new games) next since they always dies early from commander loss when AI. Long story short, early inferno gate got opened so except for a few strikes here and there to get mines, I focused on conquering the skies and getting up perpetual storms. Now I sit up here watching the world beneth me burn under the demon hordes and feeling all smug about it. Who is a stupid idiot now ey monk scribe guy? :smug:

IIRC High Priestess can break into hands with some of her summons, and maybe Demonologist???

Hoburgs get gems and weed natively, although I think you don't collect gems until you recruit the right random commanders.

Enchanters get limited gem access once you get the right level 3 ritual, although they don't get to do much with them (they're used for the magic item ritual.)

Technically anybody can break into gems by conquering citadels in the Elemental Planes and recruiting the elemental champions that occasionally show up, but they have no advancement and all they can do is dump gems into making lesser elementals.

Because resource access is based on commanders, you can charm another faction's ritual users and open up their resource & ritual access. Just like Dominions, enslave strips them of their commander status and special abilities so only charm proper works.

Witch has by far the easiest time breaking into other classes resources because she has the best Charm spells in the game. Demonologist is #2 due to succubi but you wont' reliably have them until late into a game

Well they never came up here and now I am the undisputed ruler of Elysium(Or rather whats left of it) :v:

A kobold king and barbarian held out the longest and I had to finish them off myself. They barely had any troops and by that point I had spammed cloud castles for a while so I had several stacks with around 100 troops each(40 melee/60 archers led by a caster) flying around caping capitals and mines while picking off demons and AI stacks where possible. The main push was from my 3 Queens of Elemental Air though, watching them and summoned air elementals just blow through hundreds of kobolds was quite fun!

Another Cloud Lord stack stumbled on the portal, barely guarded so I took a chance and hit it, nothing popped out so he wrecked it together with two frost titans. In the end, after throwing thousands of Airyas(?) into different meatgrinders(Not to mention drowning hundreds of them now and then, ops), the final battle was a short cleanup done by my "huh I wonder how they look" stack of frost giants. They spent their entire game wandering around in a desert capturing oasises, helped close the gate against 4 demons and then murdered abour 40 barbarians :black101:

Is there any reason you'd actually want to go to the void? Even if I take an army of something like a Starspawn commanding a bunch of Yith the stack just immediately gets split and then torn apart by horrors. And unlike most other plains I've never found anything particularly useful in there.

I think there are a few other factions that can get units that use hands, like the Bakemono have some necromancer summons iirc, and maybe the Barbarians can get Onyx Amazons? Witch is definitely the easiest, though.

The most worthwhile feature of the void is that it has a gateway directly to the elemental nexus, which is the most valuable part of any plane in the game (probably, in most respects, more valuable than attacking and dethroning god.)

Of course, in CoE5 it's easier than ever to get into the elemental planes from Elysium and finding the gate in the Void is a crapshoot, which requires you to gamble decent size armies if you want any hope of taking Nexus.

The only reason I can think of is the guaranteed tier 3 library and the elemental nexus. If you cannot enslave the horrors somehow, you’ll probably be horror marked beyond any usefulness. Not saying that’s the only reason, but it’s the only one I know of.

Also summoning multiple gods and having them stomp around is fun, but I did let...warlock? whoever gets tarts/abomination, get a bit out of hand and now he needs a smack down, which Gods and t2/t3 sky wizards are very capable of doing.

I had a pretty good run of whatever the Caelum guys are called in this game. I ended up conquering the capitals of Hades and Aztlan, although you don't actually get much from doing so as the bird men. The amount of giants the giant lord can summon for 100 sapphires is pretty ridiculous, even better if you have their special ice castle.

I do wish this game had some kind of province defense so my diamond mines don't keep getting conquered by 3 regular snakes. I really like playing kobolds since they basically do get that.

What are you guys favorite settings for the world? After trying around a bit I like the huge size, agriculture and slighly smaller north/south biomes(Because gently caress snow basically). Agriculture feels like a nice mix between nature and civilization so classes based on both can work, tho mine based cultures might have more of an issue I suspect.

Huge size feels like it gives a long but not too long game with room to manouver around, haven't tried small but Medium is fun for knife fights but you don't get to the late-game stages before everyone is dead it feels like. I just played a Demonologist game on medium with 6 AI and I didn't even get to upgrade my dude to T3(Then again everyone spawned on the west side of the continent, except for a Necromancer who died early against independents :v:) Was a fun game tho, captain stacks with 2 front/2 back rows can do a lot of damage against large AI stacks it turns out!

I’ve been messing around with the Senator. I’m finding it a little easier to become emperor (on a large map). A large part of this is thanks to boats and sea resources (which aren’t much, but easy pickings with 5 Hastati and 10 archers), as every little bit helps.

So; what’s new in 5.05? For 100 gold the emperor can appoint governors to handle statue making for him. They can also raise Roman levies in fortified sites for free.

I’ve found him useful for anti-wildlife measures, and establishing a beachhead on a Troll King infested landmass (probably the same continent but I haven’t spotted a likely joining yet). The levies are super useful for the watch towers and stupid roamers, while the statue kept Mum away from my port.

Nothing shockingly new, but super convenient to have a couple running around instead of my emperor. Between the levies and a few velites, they’re keeping things more or less clean and profitable.

Of course I’ve got more cost effective options than a 100 gold unit with no combat magic but it’s definitely nice not to need to move the emperor out to the frontline if I need to lock down a critical location with a statue of him. And boats make
ports very worth securing as recruitment points and travel routes for regular invasions.

There's an old Sierra game, Lords of Magic, which was a similar RPG/4X mashup. In that one any unit on a node, even a lovely scout, would cause independents to ignore it. Actual enemies, on the other hand, would happily slaughter your babysitter and steal your site, so if you really wanted to hold onto something you still needed a real army nearby. It's a nice compromise I think, though that game had unit upkeeps so even parking a garbage unit on a mine had some sort of cost.

enormous/empire/9 AIs on knight difficulty

most factions have uses for gold so having a high population on the map is fairer than a low population, imo. nature factions still do fine and there are plenty of gems on the map even in empire. the only faction that is really empowered more than others by empire is priest king but it feels correct for mictlan to be enormously dangerous if you leave them alone too long to do their blood saccing.

I like having lots of small settlements over having lots of large ones because it gives more reliable access to an early income base. Empire can give you really rough starts if everything around you is heavily fortified (which also means more AIs dead in the water.) I also feel the resource distribution is skewed more for hands and relics than it is for sacrifices; sacrifice factions can get by fine on hamlets and don't seem to be hugely more effective in the heavily settled eras, but El & necromancer get bonkers good when there are towns and cities everywhere.

I tend to go huge, then make north/south slightly bigger than normal. Monarchy for the Witch (because she is a revolutionary witch in my fantasy world) and Empire for the Enchanter (because I really liked the intro of Might and Magic IX where a big wizard destroys the entire empire from his tower, and of course a wizard-guy who destroys the environment and starts in a literal wizard tower just needs to be called Verhoeffin and fight the Emperor)

My witchy games tend to go better because it's easier to find sources of shrooms then sources of iron and gold: My Enchanters always need a lot of time and preparation to get going. But I like both because they're kind of mirrors of each other: Both Enchanters and Witches are centered around summoning big, scary things, but witches have cheaper summons which can turn against them, while enchanters have immensely expensive summons which will never turn against you. Also, witches protect nature, enchanters destroy it. Perfect mirrors!

Think I am gonna run a Monarchy game now actually, haven't done that in a while. Thinking a classic wizard showdown, best mage-class wins! I tried a cult showdown earlier but I died early as a High Priestess due to an ambush :v:

edit: lol picked necromancer and started right next to a gold stream, a coal mine, a silver mine and an iron mine :stare: And a pirate port! :yarr:

edit edit: Getting really tired of these effing cultist always finding the lovely gate instantly!

Ok it turned out kinda epic this time! A captain lead a small army of normal humans through uncharted territory, over mountains and swamps while dodging demon stacks to the gate. One tile away, the gate unguarded, they get attacked in a jungle only for the captain to die in battle from decay. Crucially though, his men survives and gives vision on the gate, even enduring a small band of demons attacking them.

Another expedition was outfitted, this one larger! 2 ranks of spears, swords and pikes in front, 2½ ranks of archers and crossbows in back, lead by a captain and supported by a necromancer adept! Headed out all the way from the north where my capital is down towards the gate in the south. Fought several demon bands on the way, dodged a huge scourge lord army! Reached the gate just for mystical mists to appear, blocking sight! Not wanting to risk it, they head further south, into some ruins from a city destroyed by the demons 2 tiles south of the gate and waits, enduring another attack. Then, after defeating yet ANOTHER demon attack the mists clear and the gate is in sight, unguarded! They run the two tiles, leaving just enough time to destroy the thing. Out of time and energy, the captain surveys his ragged band of survivors when scouting reports come in, detailing the massive scourge lord stack they dodged earlier bearing down on them from the north.

One last fight, then they can finally rest knowing they saved the world.

They will be avenged.

The devs have a stickied post on the steam community with recommended settings.

They recommend putting the AI's in teams and playing on a lower difficulty and I gave this a go and it's pretty good. Switching on the mode that lets all members of teams keeps going so long as one member should be alive works great the AI no longer gets eliminated by losing all its commanders OR all its citadels, only both. Makes them both much more survivable without giving them massive bonuses.

I put everyone but me into teams of 2 and it worked really well, other AI's were only really eliminated by me or other AI's and even on jester the last AI was able to get together than army that I struggled to beat (I took as much of their poo poo as possible while avoiding it and then started whittling it down - Witch gets some big boys in her army).

Edit

That's unfair, scouts have the ability to see hidden units, these commanders are in fact worse scouts, not glorified scouts.
