Missed StarkingBarfish's post. Yeah I'm UCU, it's looking pretty hosed. Unfortunately, despite 90%+ yes votes every time, my uni's had less & less less turnout every strike vote (from a starting position of exactly 2 votes under the threshold).

People really need to just start ignoring the TUA imo, look at what IWW have been up to in Bristol this week, poo poo works. (yeah I know UCU is even less likely to act do something about lovely regressive laws than the rest of the mainstream unions, but a boy can dream)

We had such a lively GTVO campaign last time but jfc it was still an all-time low since this poo poo's been going on.

My union rep was very clear to everyone that he was taking the position because he wanted to make himself harder to fire. He's actually turned out to be surprisingly alright considering, but not great.

Personally I don't really see the point of the Labour register anymore, it's not like anyone's doing an entryism.

Maskless people last winter might have been in that category, but the majority of them now are (IMO) people who have just forgotten to bring one/can't be arsed putting one on - I'm willing to bet if offered most of them would take one and wear it. I occasionally forget mine when heading out the door and just go shopping face-naked now rather than turning back.

It's been a looooong 18 months and people just get slack, there's not much you can do about that.
Masks in shops are still mandatory in Wales and compliance here is very low. Annoyingly, it's almost all students that are going maskless ("annoying" because they've been getting a lot of poo poo for the past 18 monthsever, and I've been defending them until now, the students were fine last year & it was the olds loving about). Approximately 100% of the obvious-freshers & about half of the rest of them are maskless, in any shop at any time. Including the Welsh ones, so it's not just people who aren't aware that it's mandatory here. I think it's just that a significant enough number of them aren't wearing masks that it's reached a critical mass where nobody wants to be the only one with a mask on. The old paradox of the nonconformist.

Should probably have clarified that I live in a very studenty area, & if you ignore the students compliance is very high (most of the maskless people have some obvious visible reason for not wearing one), it's just the students for some reason. No idea why, they were good as gold last year.

Very excited to be back doing in-person small-group teaching at the uni next month, yessir

Not sure myself. Legalistically, ime no civil litigant in the history of earth has every accepted that they ever did anything even a little bit wrong, settlements are always just entered into for pragmatic reasons with no admission of guilt. More practically, all anyone's really gonna pay attention to is the fact that he won, which means he can't have done anything because just world no I won't read the judgment fa lala lala.

There's also the fact that literally everyone already knows he's a nonce so it's not like this changes anyone's mind anyway. "Comments disabled for legal reasons" lol.

Unorthodox view but imo do not trust anything a non-specialist doctor has to say about sports injuries, because generally they'll just say "stop doing sports", which is usually terrible advice (shout out to my excellent GP though whose priority is always getting me straight back into the gym on account of my terminal sadbrains). Haven't seen you post about it in YLLS - no doctors about that I know of, but a whole bunch of mostly smart people who've collectively suffered every lifting related injury you can get, you might get some good advice there (the advice is usually "keep training if you can, at lower intensity if you must, it'll get better").

e: yes that was an unironic "doctors, pfft, talk to these internet strangers instead" post, fite me

True, but in order for the electoral college to help them the right also have to stop loving over the unions

Hearty lmao if they try to rig the voting system again and it catapults another leftist into power

Centrist politicians see themselves as being sensible people who care for society, and being a centrist politician just happens to be a way to get rich whilst stroking yourself off about what a good person you are. They don't think/believe that they're just in it for themselves, but they definitely are.

What’s the quote about how hard it is to understand an idea when your salary depends on not understanding it?

MP’s salaries are not just unusually high, they are unusually _dependant_. Comparable middle class jobs don’t have performance reviews every few years that result in not just the sack, but very limited prospects of a comparable job.guaranteed promotion to a cushy consulting gig at much higher pay for very little work, just as long as you spend your time in office sucking up to big business, which is really just common sense when you think about it, it's just coincidence that the thing that's better for everyone if you're being sensible about it just happens to be really really good for me personally

I wonder if politics would work better if instead of being sacked on losing an election, MPs just got relegated to the Welsh assembly or something.
ftfy, but in relation to your last point it's been discussed many times itt & elsewhere that it would be far better for MPs to have guaranteed gardening leave for life except in cases of corruption, and serious criminal sanctions for getting any income whatsoever from any other source from the second you're elected, for life. There's problems with e.g. if your spouse just happens to get the cushy gig with the companies you've been shilling for instead of you, but since there's bigger problems with the fact that it would require legislators to legislate to stop themselves from being corrupt* it's not really an issue.

*In fact the bigger problems are probably that the media barons have a vested interest in politicians being corrupt, so anything that starts with "we have to pay MPs more" would get dragged through so much mud it wouldn't make it to first reading. Either way, good idea but unrealistic imo.
