Regarding the Texas abortion bullshit, this is the recap of where things are right now, don't follow a lot of the ABORTION IS ILLEGAL takes yet:

https://twitter.com/ENBrown/status/1433023594670530560?s=19

And "Supreme Court lets law take effect" isn't quite accurate, it's more of a "Supreme Court fails to act by deadline, law takes effect but may get stayed/thrown out/affirmed at any minute".

Quoting from last thread. SB8 is in full effect in Texas right now. The Fifth Circuit deliberately stalled, and the State of Texas has asked the SCOTUS to dismiss the entire case that found SB8 unconstitutional in the first place which I think they're going to grant.

Right now anyone involved with an abortion after 6 weeks in Texas is open to a massive amount of liability and expense even if they win and get the suits dismissed.

Last night I was talking to my 10 year old and she brought up Afghanistan. I thought she would want to talk about how "America ended it's longest war" (her words) so I asked her what she wanted to know. Nope, she suggested I celebrate it by bringing my Foreign Policy class a cake.

I thought that was a pretty good idea.

Just to ask for clarity’s sake, these charts are meant to illustrate the differences between Canada (a country with more thorough masking and prevention policies) and the US (with vast swaths of the South and Plaines with essentially no mitigation strategies)?

Any Canadians able to speak to their country’s general response to COVID and masking? I’m pretty ignorant as far as the inertial pandemic politics of the Great White North.

Yes but they acknowledge "other factors not easily quantified" which can be things like overall population density average and quality of medical care in average for each nation etc.

But yeah overall we're looking at 2 countries with the same proportions of delta, one of which has 15% more vaccinated.

From what I hear some of the western provinces, Alberta etc are pretty chud heavy and aren't doing well with masking either but I have no idea how widespread that is in Canada proper.

I'm from the Chicago area, wife's from outside Toronto, dad lives outside of Gainesville Georgia. We road tripped to both this summer. Georgia is what you'd expect but throwing that in to show that I've seen outside of Chicago.

Ontario was noticeably better than the Chicagoland area with mask compliance and places you ate at actually having contact tracing set up. Some family there was fed up with some of the less logical parts of their lockdowns but they also barely knew anyone that had covid much less died of it. From my perspective it sure seemed worth it.

Also their government has done a much better job (not hard to do better than almost nothing) of financially supporting individuals and businesses during lockdowns.

I'm sure someone that lives there can give a better take on it.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

So I can tell y'all how Ontario's COVID response has been.

We were essentially in a lockdown between early October and may. All gyms, restaurants and most retail was flat out closed. Schools were closed.

We had to do this as our ICU bed capacity is very low compared to the US. Non-essential surgeries were cancelled at the 800-900 pax ICU level.

Vaccines were very difficult to get at first. There was a Twitter account setup (vaccine hunters) to help people find vaccination centers near them.

Things are finally open again now, but not fully. Our idiot premier, The Coward Douglas Ford is just right now announcing that vaccine certificates will be required for gyms, cinemas and indoor dining after refusing to do so for months.

It has been bad.
