I disagree, I really like the 0.9 twinair engine. It likes being thrashed and makes fun noises, and will happily sit at 75 on the motorway all day and get 55mpg whilst costing me gently caress all to insure and no tax here (low emissions and tiny engine). My engine has 135k miles on which is pretty high for a little fiat and hasnt actually broken atall since i bought it 70k miles ago.

I just dislike how the wastegate has broken on mine and how a) brexit and covid have hosed up both prices and shipping in the UK b) demand for turbos for twinairs is apparently high enough that some of the turbo rebuilders here don't do core exchange charges anymore so i have to strip it down first.

Its alright there's enough junkers floating about the country to roll my own.

Looks like I found a welder to weld the crack and fishplate the frame on both rails to make it back west. Option B is to drive and store it at a goon's place out in the midwest and deal with it later. If the welder is unable to provide a temporary solution I'll ship it to either location.
Gonna move back to SF since the timing here is most unfortunate and i've not found the next place to move to nor have stars aligned correctly to buy a place. I'm not in a position to drop 75 large on a new F550 and I do not have the willpower to buy a 20 year old F550 with a worn out 7.3 and roll the dice with my tools 1300 miles away.

I have no interest in moving everything over to another similarly equipped frame. Beyond that I'm not sure. I won't have a garage in SF this time and rebuilding this truck isn't going to be a priority. I could rehome it on a 08+ F550 frame but you know as well as I do it'll get broken like this one did.
Camper stays, its gonna go on another truck of the class 5-8 variety, with 4x4 or 6x6. I'm done with little trucks.

The truck is just a tool. Tools break. I built it to build a homestead for us but regardless it got a solid second lease on life for a few years and it went out with a bang. May its parts keep many others running.

Maybe I'm dumb, but why is this an immediate death sentence? It seems like you can weld in enough frame reinforcement to handle what you're throwing at it?

Is it a failure that's indicative of further cascading failures, or is the crack a sign that the chassis just isn't up to the duty?

I'm seriously sad about this, I've watched it as an incredible project and fantastic idea.

Of all places, why back to SF?

It'll cascade fail. Plate the crack, the crack is now going to form where the plate ends... extend the plate.. crack moves again... etc. From reading there's 3 major failure areas on these frames. Over the axles where the channel is pinched, in front of the rear spring hangers (where mine and a fellow goon's F350 snapped) and behind the front leaf spring mounts. Its literally mild steel and nothing really special. Patch this and the next weakest link will go. This frame is not up to the task. Its not uncommon even in newer 350/450s busting frames under the weight of a truck camper. I literally didn't know. the 550 uses a different frame that doesn't seem to have this problem. There were no 550s in this era, this is already a 450 frame.

If it were just a wheeling toy or whatever yeah I wouldn't care much. but uhhh for something that hauls, and hauls us and a very spicy (lithium!) load. it can't be trusted. I caught this crack early. Next time may not be so fortunate. DOT tends to frown on frame patches. Its also something that can be a huge hassle in selling. Its literally better to part it out than risk lawsuits.

Sorry to see that go. I do think you would be best served by just rolling on the patch for a bit. This wave of covid is pretty bad and going to set us back 2-3 months in terms of supply chain recovery. And I can’t imagine trying to find housing is going to be easy thanks to the eviction moratorium. I would find a spot and ride it out.

If nothing else works out you are welcome to use my shop in Indiana but you have to install the 2 post lift. Has a 50 amp hookup, cleanout and city water. I don’t have a welder at the moment but its on the list.

The camper uncouples from the truck really easily. it was one of our early design decisions as we intended to replace donkey with something more befitting of the camper's build. It was built to build some land out, not live on.

I don't plan to buy there. this is probably 1-2 years while waiting for the afore mentioned stars to align. We lived there before, we can move back relatively easy. If we bought some questionable truck while still on vacation, this becomes less easy. There are other things we're waiting for that I don't wish to make public on the forums, the timing is poo poo for the frame to break.

Its not just the frame. this fucker is dying a death of a thousand cuts and i'm calling it at the frame as its the major failure damning the project and its potential to ever do future work or get sold in the open market. This means I'm hesitant to pump another dime into improving this truck. The injection pump is acting up, I'm still unsure that the suspension shop didn't fuckup the rearend, nevermind the lack of sound deadening, decent seating, and air con. Most all this stuff I don't care a lot about. The frame... screws it all up. Hard to justify a thousand dollar pump on an engine at best worth $300, on a truck that can't be used or sold.
We set aside a years budget for travels and vacation plus enough to go back to apartment living. We've made it 10 months, and can handle one more good systems breakdown. With the frame and cranky IP I'd rather start heading back towards familiar waters. I think we got a good vacation out of this thing.

It'll probably take us 2 months to get back west. I do not want the frame to break further. Gonna get dude to brace both rails so it can't break there on the opposite side. No offroading and jeep trails. truckstops and restareas only. part of the SF decision is we don't want to buy a car, nor another truck right now. Can do moto and bicycle there pretty much 365 days a year.

rdb I'd help you install the lift just to help out. Indiana isn't accessible atm but after the patch... we'll see. I got a "no" from several shops on liability/dot reasons alone. This guy is only willing to weld on it with a release of liability wavier. I mean yeah, I'd ask for the same or flat out not touch this kind of poo poo on highway going vehicles. but heavy equipment prevails....just don't drive it at 85. My GM bus was mostly patch panels and bulkhead plates lol.
I've offers from goons to drop this off in the midwest and let it sit out of the way. I think its best to keep it nearby just in case. I can't speak for the future. Right now? its getting backburnered like the Gillig. Maybe in the next crash I'll find a killer deal on a dead 08+ F550 frame/chassis to rehome the cab on with a newer cummins|allison. Who knows. Right now it just needs to get back out west.

Preferably ferd but dodge of the 5500 variety would probably be ok too. basically coiler solid front and HD rear. Old MDT? yeah absofrigginlutely. A powered front axle as long as it isn't a 5 ton/deuce and let's party. I'd prefer that over ford poo poo again. FMTV would possibly work too but i'm throwing the cat over a fence.

Its sooo awful. The cab needs to be stripped and modernized with insulation and sound deadening if its to be reused in a future build.... I did buy some really really nice door cards for it. The lack of insulation plus lack of a/c and busted springed bench makes it a torture test for anything over about 150-200mi in a day. It gets air flow without a/c but that means listening to the engine at full volume + air. Our jaunt east we started wearing earplugs to help prevent noise fatigue. it helped immensely. Some areas of the rockies mean listening to this thing scream at 2500-2800rpm at 45-50mph for hours.
I intended to use it to drive a couple hours at a time to fetch building supplies and such, not this. With the frame now cracked I can't in good faith put a 20-40' gooseneck behind it to haul say rafters or Quonset hut shells.

Now that you all know that. Recently some familial stuff came up and we pushed this fucker 650mi in two days. August we put 1800 miles down to evade smoke + the former.
It probably contributed to where we are today.
