THE LIAR
It's September 6th, you know what that means! It means it's about 4 months until January. Last year, around this time, I made an Observer Awards thread based on the idea that enough time had passed for us to form opinions, but there was still enough Combustible poo poo left in the year that we could have those opinions ripped asunder. It was a lot of fun, we had a lot of good discussion about the stuff we liked (and the stuff we hated) and now I think is the perfect time to do it again, with both AEW and WWE finishing their Summers on relative high notes, AEW about to head into the Fall with huge momentum, WWE entering a pretty significant transition period, NJPW still with the G1 in front of it, the American indies fully back in swing after basically taking last year off. Wrestling's pretty cool right now. Get into it!

Rules:
1. Don't be an rear end in a top hat. Seriously. Good natured ribbing is one thing, we can all take a bit of friendly goofin', but if somebody genuinely feels someone is the best wrestler of the year or whatever or if somebody puts something you like as the worst thing of the year, you can disagree with them, but don't call them an idiot who doesn't know what they're talking about. We should all know how to behave ourselves on this one at this point. So behave yourself.

And that's it. That's the only rule. Just be nice.

Here's a C+P friendly version of the ballot! Don't feel obligated to fill out anything you don't want to. I'll personally be skipping every MMA Award because I don't watch MMA. Remember that category A awards are top-3 ranked voting and category B awards are single vote. If you're not sure what you're feeling for any particular award, post your thoughts about it! The point of this is to generate discussion!

Lou Thesz/Ric Flair "Wrestler of the Year" Award: I never know with this award. I get nerdy over match quality & who pops me rather than who drives business. But this year I know even less than usual. Probably 3rd I give to Kento Miyahara for continuing to be the only reason All Japan still draw anybody to shows
Most Outstanding Wrestler: 1. Shingo Takagi & for me it's not even remotely close. 2. Rina Yamashita 3. Arisa Nakajima. I guess this is the year I went full joshi pervert? Didn't see that coming 2 years ago.
Tag Team of the Year: 1. Citrus Wind (Arisa Nakajima & Nanae Takahashi) 2. Eruption (Kazusada Higuchi & Yukio Sakaguchi) 3. Las Fresas de Egoista (ASUKA & Makoto)
Promotion of the Year: If I was going on sheer number of matches in my top 25 it'd be hands down New Japan. But they frustrated me far too much. 1. Dragon Gate, just being DG, great year, lot of great stuff, nobody pays attention. 2. SEAdLINNNG, because there's no company I am more excited to tune in for every show as soon as it makes its way online. 3. Pro Wrestling FREEDOMS, same as SEAd, they just have me hugely excited every time they do a show. Or maybe GLEAT, same thing.
Pro Wrestling Match of the Year: 1. Kazuchika Okada vs Shingo Takagi, NJPW Dominion 7/6 2. Will Ospreay vs Shingo Takagi, NJPW Wrestling Dontaku 4/5 3. Kota Ibushi vs Jay White, NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 5/1

US/Canada MVP: I've watched AEW for maybe 2 months now, not sure I'm equipped to answer this atm
Japan MVP: Shingo Takagi
Mexico MVP: Laredo Kid maybe
Europe MVP: Will Ospreay
Non-Heavyweight MVP: Fuminori Abe
Women's Wrestling MVP: Rina Yamashita
Feud of the Year: Gedo vs my enjoyment of New Japan. Or possibly Katsuhiko Nakajima vs Masa Kitamiya from NOAH
Most Charismatic: Hiromu Takahashi in a landslide
Bryan Danielson "Best Technical Wrestler" Award: Zack Sabre Jr? I'm kinda blank here
Bruiser Brody Memorial "Best Brawler" Award: Takayuki Ueki
Best Flying Wrestler: El Hijo del Vikingo
Most Underrated: Fuminori Abe
Rookie of the Year: Apparently SB KENTo counts, so him.
Best Major Wrestling Show: GLEAT Ver.1 or Dragon Gate Kobe World
Worst Major Wrestling Show: NJPW Castle Attack Night 1 comes to mind.
Best Wrestling Maneuver: Made In Japan
Worst Television Show: Then, Now, Forever, WWE Raw
Worst Match of the Year: EVIL vs Kazuchika Okada, 11/2 or Great O Khan vs Toru Yano, 11/3, both matches I have rated at 0.5 stars
Worst Promotion of the Year: WWE, FOAD
Promoter of the Year: Tony Khan
Best Gimmick: Definitely agree with petulant manchild Kenoh
Worst Gimmick: EVIL

3) Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy/Luchasaurus)

Best on Interviews:

Promotion of the Year:

1) AEW
2) NJPW
3) IMPACT

No, seriously. IMPACT almost kinda matters again.

Best Weekly TV Show:

1) AEW Dynamite
2) AEW Dark
3) AEW Rampage

Pro Wrestling Match of the Year:

1) 08/13 | Kenny Omega (C) vs. Christian Cage for the Impact World Championship - AEW Rampage
2) 08/11 | Kenny Omega & The Young Bucks vs. Dante Martin & The Sydal Brothers - AEW Dynamite

It would never ever happen but strictly looking at the title Most Underrated would be The Fiend Bray Wyatt. The man had a huge fanbase for himself, was a merch mover, was one of the only WWE born and bred things of the last twenty years that had any traction, was apparently ready for a redebut... and WWE fired him out of the blue because they decided he wasn't worth keeping. Its a different view from the usual like how for example WWE still technically has THE ENTIRETY OF NXT UK EMPLOYED who has about a dozen people that qualify but as an investment that pays off Bray was already there.

Top Flight are a killer young tag team who are real life brothers, Darius Martin (22) and Dante Martin (20). Darius has been out injured for most of this year so Dante's mostly been working singles matches. He's had some cool moments

Have to have debuted for a "major league" promotion (which is a very nebulous definition that changes annually - PWG didn't count last year for example but has before) no earlier than August the year before - so 1 September 2020 would be the deadline date for 2021.

That was entirely behind me voting Laredo Kid, as I'd been going through his archives for lucha recommendations & came across his post about the 2020 WON awards.

100% Fenix wins again though.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

Have to have debuted for a "major league" promotion (which is a very nebulous definition that changes annually - PWG didn't count last year for example but has before) no earlier than August the year before - so 1 September 2020 would be the deadline date for 2021.

Ah, I was taking it as debuting in 2021 itself. I that case I'm chaging my Rookie of the Year to Yasutaka Yano from NOAH

I'm of the opinion that more people should have GM Imabayashi as best non-wrestler, he's not as ubiquitous as other options but every single time he features on a DDT show he makes it better. The double singles match at Peter Pan would not have been nearly as entertaining as it ended up being if he were not there getting increasingly fed up with everyone's poo poo.

Also more people in general should watch DDT, it's a great variety of comedy, deathmatches, stiff fights and traditional wrestling

Someone really must hate their catchphrase as that's the only thing I can think of as their gimmick. Though that reminds me maybe I should consider Tam Nakano "Twitter waifu" for worst gimmick or is that best gimmick?
