In a small way, I'm an opera guy. Yeah, there's lots of material here. Liu in Turandot, Mimi in La Boheme, Tosca ('nuff said). But one that always gets me is in a weird place. Gilbert & Sullivan wrote a little thing called The Mikado. Mostly, it's a silly comic opera, much more about Britain at the time than Japan, and it has standard mechanics of two lovers being blocked by this, that, and the other. But in the second act, there is a weird bit. Katisha, a comic middle-aged spinster character who is scheming to marry the male lead is thwarted. And she is given a slow, mournful aria, "Alone and yet alive". It implies that besides being an obstacle to the leads, that she really did love him. Maybe it's just there as a cynical theater bit to make people weep a bit so they'll love the show, but it moves me to tears every time.
