So I am not sure if it is completely sad rather than just longing. But that is part of the magic. The lyrics are uplifting and even somewhat braggadocious? It's like going through the darkness and now starting to see the light. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3xl9QMCyDA |

"Lemon" by Katie Rose ends the action in the film Thirteen (2003). The song appears at a bittersweet moment. The main character goes through a lot, but there is a glimmer of hope. And in real life we know that the girl played by Evan Rachel Wood (who plays the quasi-antagonist or just troubled, ultimately lonely girl who introduced her to drugs and underage sex and general trouble beyond what "kids being kids" allows for) ended up a talented actor, writer, director, and producer. That talent should be obvious from the fact that she literally co-wrote the script with director Cathetine Hardwick. Also Holly Hunter plays the protagonist's mother so you know she'll end up fine eventually even though she ends the movie screaming. On a playground, which is pretty on the nose symbolism. So why, oh why does it make me melancholic if the sadness of the song is a "beautiful sadness" as Butters from South Park would say? https://youtu.be/V6uCOgf0SoU If it seems a bit simplistic please know that the singer-songwriter responsible is literally a child. There's this song in the extended Unitarian Universalist hymnal (the blue one) called "Blue Boat Home". It's the tune of "come thou long awaited Jesus" but the lyrics are about the Earth being your boat through the universe. For some reason, the very first time I heard it, I was like "oh this is what everybody's going to sing at my funeral" and it made me really sad to think about everybody I love being all bummed out like that. So now I cry every time I hear it, which is a weird reaction to such a dumb song. I'm welling up just typing this in! |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBiYspL0zOc I saw him play this at the Bowery when I was 21, as I was beginning to internalize that my dad wouldn't ever really get better and there was absolutely nothing I could do about it and for various reasons I'd probably never understand him any more or any better than I did before I left for school, which was not much.

It's arguably more bittersweet than sad, but it's also a classic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwrHwZyFN7M Also, a personal fave, from Kate Bush's 2005 album Aerial about the death of her mother. -- I think it's her best song ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hVqk9kAEWI
