kyojin posted:World famous oceanographer: we did not know and could not know that just dumping all our garbage into the ocean was in fact a bad idea. There was simply no way to know this. Is the ocean a place where things live or is it nothing more than a big wet immaculate garbage dump. How could I, an oceanographer, have known the answer to this mystery a mere thirty years ago Are the ocean scientists particularly loving stupid or something? Are they drinking the plastic maybe? Did anyone with more than a third of their brain function just gently caress off and do something else years ago when it became obvious the ocean was going to become a tomb? Why are so many of these people confused that the ocean actually is not the magical faraway bin?

Did anyone with more than a third of their brain function just gently caress off and do something else years ago when it became obvious the ocean was going to become a tomb? Why are so many of these people confused that the ocean actually is not the magical faraway bin? I think it's just the 2D thinking we get stuck in. Spaceships always approach eachother face to face on the same plane. Also how a sheet of plexiglass between two people in a conversation stop airborne particles like a forcefield that extends to infinity in all directions. A climate example is how we didn't fully account for all of the ways an iceberg can melt. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/233806259_A_Reconciled_Estimate_of_Ice-Sheet_Mass_Balance That's the study where they figured out that ice can be broken down by the same melt/freeze cycles as rocks. We figured they were big ice cubes and did a bunch of math on how long air/water temperature rise would take to shrink the cubes in a big cup of water but once they started exceeding our expectations we realized the ice started crumbling into much easier to melt pieces once accelerated melting penetrates into the structure through cracks and refreezes. So it doesn't surprise me that nobody considered that when we make a trillion tons of toxic pollution that is both extremely durable, pliable and able to maintain it's integrity down to a microscopic level and dump it all in the ocean that the ocean might turn into a microscopic pollution delivery system Rectal Death Alert has issued a correction as of 08:04 on Apr 20, 2024 |

Kal posted:can we cover the ocean with a sheet of plastic to contain the PFAS? Idiot, that will suffocate all the fish and cetaceans and seals. No, we need to cover the ocean with those breathable plastic bandages that let the oxygen through. Then all the sea animals will be safely contained in with all the PFAS.
