Blew my own mind reading a report from the JASON society last night- http://fas.org/irp/agency/dod/jason/co2.pdf I don't know what changed between 1979 when this pretty much perfect report was produced to 35 years later when the IPCC was sharing their inaccurate trash predictions Car Hater posted:I can't wait anymore! What the hell is the point of a pachinko parlor. It's basically a casino where you don't win money and there's lots of people smoking?

Well as long as we specifically don't let the oil producing countries gain disproportionate influence over deciding cooperative measures we should be just fine

It's the most realistic assessment ever conducted. Where is more food supposed to come from? Even if you slash and burn everything, the cropland you "create" is still subject to the same rain or lack of rain that growing food depends on. As a species our limits are no longer about fertilizer or arable land but the seasons and weather being amenable to producing food in sufficient mass quantities

Opted for a carbon offset for my car rental this weekend. Only 75 cents to mitigate the damage from driving 400 miles. At this rate the planet will be saved in no time

Rauros posted:life becomes a horror show when all the kids are sucking on plastic pouches instead of just eating the natural fruit. But the first step is destroying the desirability of the natural fruit by making it bigger and hence diluting the flavor, as well as breeding for transport and storage instead of taste. Who wouldn't then clamor for the ultra-distilled, artificially enhanced fruit juice concentrate when the "real thing" is no longer "real" enough?

Also I wonder what it does to drive something like whales to the brink of extinction, with the role they play as a top trophic level in the phytoplankton ecosystem. The impression seems to be we killed most of them long before other methods of fishing became industrialized
