A tangent about Rupees. They're actually just called "Rubies" in the CD-I games.
In Link: The Faces of Evil, the red ruby is worth only 1 unit compared to the 20 they are known for being valued in most Zelda games. Green are worth 5 and Blue are worth 10. They can only be spent to buy the aforementioned Lamp Oil, Rope, and Bombs in Morshu's shop, as there is no other merchant in the game. Link can only pick up Rubies by crouching or striking them with his sword, which is also the way you talk to NPCs.

Many CD-I sprites is the focus on lines, skin folds, etc over actual shading. Perhaps there was a limit on the amount of colors they could use for sprites? There are only 21 indexed colors in this image, not counting transparency. Images without the rupee trend around 13.
